Emporia’s Vue 3 (model EMV3A) clamps two 200A sensors around your home’s service mains and up to sixteen 50A sensors around individual breakers, then streams the readings to the Emporia app over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, according to Emporia’s Vue 3 spec sheet and installation guide. Emporia rates its accuracy at ±2% and its own power use at under 3 watts, and lists three U.S. kits: $99.99 for mains only, $149.99 with 8 branch sensors and $199.99 with 16. This review covers what the Vue 3 measures, which kit to buy, and how the install works, along with the step Emporia says belongs to a licensed electrician.

Which Vue 3 Kit to Buy
| Kit | Emporia price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mains only (2 × 200A) | $99.99 | Whole-home use and solar net metering, no per-circuit detail |
| Mains + 8 branch sensors | $149.99 | Tracking the big loads: HVAC, water heater, dryer, range, EV charger |
| Mains + 16 branch sensors | $199.99 | Most circuits in a typical panel, rentals, or separate solar circuits |
On Amazon, the same three tiers are listed as the Vue 3 mains-only kit ($99.99), the 8-sensor kit ($149.99) and the 16-sensor kit ($199.99), as of Oct. 17, 2026.
If you have more than 16 circuits, Emporia suggests adding a second Vue. The app’s “Vue Combining” feature joins them into one view with combined totals. “Nesting” lets one Vue watch a subpanel and roll its data up to a parent Vue. Both are handy for 400A service or a detached garage subpanel.
What the Vue 3 Shows You
- Whole-home use in real time, from the two main sensors.
- Per-circuit use, from each branch sensor you clamp on a breaker’s hot conductor.
- Solar net metering out of the box. Emporia says the main sensors show electricity used minus electricity produced. For separate production numbers, clamp branch sensors on the inverter leads and label them “Solar/Generation” in the app.
- Alerts for an oven left on, a sump pump running nonstop or usage spikes while you’re away (Emporia product page).
- Automation, including time-of-use scheduling, excess-solar scheduling, and PowerSmart EV load management with Emporia’s EV chargers.
Data retention, per the Amazon listing: 1-second data is available only while the app is open and is kept for 3 hours. 1-minute data is kept for 7 days, and 1-hour data is kept indefinitely. You can export cloud data from the app.
Emporia Vue 3 Install: How It Works
Emporia’s guide is direct about this: the Vue installs inside the electrical panel, near conductors that stay energized even with the main breaker off. It says installation “should be performed by a skilled person such as a licensed electrician or other qualified professional” in line with local electrical code. Emporia offers a $100 install credit through its installation services page. The overview below helps you plan the job and talk it through with your electrician. It isn’t a substitute for the guide or a professional.
Before the Install
- Download the Emporia app. Scan the QR code on the back of the monitor or on the Getting Started Guide, and create an account.
- Check the Wi-Fi signal at the panel with your phone. If it’s weak, plan an Ethernet run (Cat5e or better) or a Wi-Fi extender.
- Count your breakers. Note which circuits you want to monitor and whether there are two empty, vertically adjacent single-pole slots for the voltage harness.
- Know your solar type, if you have solar: breaker-fed or line-side tap. It changes where the main sensors go.
The Install Steps in Emporia’s Guide
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Power down | Main breaker or service disconnect off and panel cover removed. Emporia warns the service mains stay energized. |
| Place the monitor | At least 2 in (50.8mm) from live parts. It can mount to the grounded box near the neutral/ground bars. |
| Network | Antenna fed through a knockout and kept outside the metal box (inside a wall is OK), or Ethernet plugged into the RJ45 port |
| Main CTs | Clamped around each incoming hot main, with the “Breaker” imprint toward the breakers. Never on the neutral. |
| Voltage harness | Black (L1) and Red (L2) to two stacked breakers on different phases; White (N) and Blue (L3) to the neutral bar in a typical U.S. home |
| Branch CTs | Clamped on the hot leg of each breaker to be monitored. Note the port number for the app. |
| Photo, close up | Photograph the install, replace the cover, turn the breakers back on and finish setup in the app |
The guide covers three harness cases. You can wire to empty breakers of any size. You can splice onto in-use 15A breakers with the included wire nuts and splicing wires; larger breakers work only if the splice wire gauge matches the existing wire. AFCI/GFCI breakers have their own wiring rule. Emporia’s guide says to connect the harness using 14AWG, 600V, UL1015-rated copper wire and to use only Emporia CTs.
Setup Status Lights
| Light | Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | 1 blink every 3 s | Not connected to router |
| Wi-Fi | 2 blinks every 3 s | On router, connecting to internet |
| Wi-Fi | Solid green | Online |
| LAN | Solid blue | Online over Ethernet |
Emporia’s setup tips are practical. Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth for pairing, and on Android, turn on Location Services. If you have solar, run the configuration at night or with the solar off, with a clear load running such as an oven or dryer.
Worked Examples: Turning Data Into Savings
Example 1: Finding a hidden load. Say a branch sensor on a garage circuit shows a steady 150W, all day and night. That’s 150W × 24 h = 3.6kWh a day, or about 108kWh a month. At $0.18/kWh, that’s about $19 a month, or $233 a year. That’s more than the cost of the 16-sensor kit. A second fridge or freezer, a dehumidifier or a well pump are common things to check.
Example 2: Two-pole circuits. A 240V water heater on a 2-pole breaker can use one CT per leg, which Emporia calls most accurate. To save sensors, you can use one CT on one leg and set a multiplier of “2” in the app. Emporia notes the single-CT method doesn’t accurately track unbalanced loads. Use two CTs for something like a subpanel feed.
Example 3: Sizing a backup battery. One week of circuit data tells you what your critical loads actually use. If fridge + furnace fan + Wi-Fi + lights average 400W, a 24-hour outage needs about 9.6kWh. Our critical loads panel guide and home battery backup guide show how to turn that number into a battery size.
Example 4: Solar homes. With branch CTs on the inverter leads, the Vue shows production and consumption separately. You can then time the dishwasher or EV charging to your solar peak, which matters most under the plans in our net metering vs net billing explainer.
Who the Vue 3 Is For
| You want… | Vue 3 fit |
|---|---|
| To know which appliances drive your bill | Strong. Get the 8- or 16-sensor kit. |
| Solar production and net use in one app | Strong. Net metering is built in; add branch CTs for production. |
| To size a home battery or generator | Strong. Real circuit data beats guesses. |
| Separate billing for rental units | Good. Emporia promotes multi-property tracking. |
| A no-panel option | Look at Emporia’s Vue Utility Connect, which plugs into an outlet and reads a compatible smart meter in select utility areas. |
For simple spot checks without a permanent install, a clamp meter also works. See our Klein CL390 clamp meter test and how to read your electric bill before going solar.
