Running a rooftop unit is the big question with a Victron MultiPlus air conditioner setup. The short answer: a MultiPlus-II 12/3000 can usually run one 13,500 BTU-class RV air conditioner on battery, often with a soft starter. The battery is what limits how long. Here’s the math, using Victron’s MultiPlus-II 120V datasheet.
Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

| Peak power | 5,500W |
| Transfer switch | 50A |
| Max charge current | 120A |

Note the 40°C figure. When you need air conditioning most, the inverter is often hot too.
Running Watts: Usually Fine
Check the air conditioner’s nameplate. A typical 13,500 BTU rooftop unit is often listed at around 12–16A on 120V, about 1,400–1,900W while running. That fits under 2,200W with some room for a fridge and lights.
Example figures only. Use your unit’s nameplate or measure it with a clamp meter.
Startup Surge: The Hard Part
Compressors pull a large inrush current for a fraction of a second. The MultiPlus-II’s 5,500W peak handles many units, but older AC units can trip the inverter into overload. A soft starter lowers the inrush, and it’s the common fix.
Battery Math (Estimate)
At 1,600W running, with about 90% inverter efficiency: 1,600 ÷ 0.9 ≈ 1,780W from the battery, about 140A at 12.8V.
- 400Ah Victron lithium (about 5,120Wh): 5,120 × 0.8 ÷ 1,780 ≈ 2.3 hours of continuous running
- Compressors cycle on and off, so real runtime is often longer
Victron’s MultiPlus-II manual recommends a 400–1,200Ah bank for the 12/3000. A 140A draw is reasonable for a 400Ah lithium bank.
On Shore Power or a Generator
With shore power, the MultiPlus-II passes AC through. PowerAssist lets the battery help when a 30A pedestal or small generator can’t cover the AC plus other loads. Set the input current limit to the source.

The MultiPlus-II 2×120 handles 120/240V shore power. In inverter mode, Victron’s manual says the output is always 120V. Two air conditioners running together could need 3,000W or more, beyond a 3kVA unit’s 2,400W continuous rating. Run one on battery and both on shore. You can check the MultiPlus-II 2×120 on Amazon.

Example: A Summer Evening on Battery
| Load | Running watts (example) | Hours | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13,500 BTU AC (cycling about 60% of the time) | 1,600W | 4 | About 3.8kWh |
| Fridge | 100W average | 4 | 0.4kWh |
| Lights and TV | 150W | 4 | 0.6kWh |
| Total from battery (with inverter losses) | About 5.3kWh |
Estimates. That’s roughly a full 400Ah 12V lithium bank for a four-hour evening. Doubling the bank, or adding solar during the day, makes the evening comfortable without draining the battery to empty.
Ways to Stretch Runtime
- Pre-cool on shore power or solar: cool the RV in the afternoon so the AC cycles less in the evening.
- Park in shade and use reflective window covers: less heat in means less compressor time.
- Set the thermostat a few degrees higher: a small change can cut compressor run time noticeably.
- Consider a high-efficiency or variable-speed AC unit: these can run at lower power once the RV is cool.
Sizing a Bank for Overnight Cooling
| Goal | Usable energy needed (estimate) | 12V lithium bank |
|---|---|---|
| 4 hours of cooling | About 5kWh | 400–500Ah |
| 8 hours of cooling | About 9–10kWh | 800Ah |
| All night plus morning | 12kWh+ | 1,000Ah or more |
Estimates; at the top of that range, a 24V or 48V system becomes more practical.
Charging Back Up
After an evening of air conditioning, the battery needs a fast recharge. The MultiPlus-II 12/3000 charges at up to 120A from shore power or a generator, per the datasheet, which refills about 100Ah in under an hour. Solar adds to that during the day through an MPPT charge controller, and an Orion XS DC-DC charger tops up from the alternator while driving.
Wiring for the Load
At 140A or more of DC current, short, heavy cables matter. Victron’s manual specifies the fuse and cable size for the 12/3000, typically 2x AWG 1/0 for runs up to 5m with a 400A fuse. Undersized cables heat up and cause voltage drop that can trip the inverter’s low-voltage alarm early.
12V vs 24V vs 48V for Air Conditioning
| System | Battery current at 1,780W (estimate) |
|---|---|
| 12V (MultiPlus-II 12/3000) | About 140A |
| 24V (MultiPlus-II 24/3000) | About 70A |
| 48V (MultiPlus-II 48/3000) | About 35A |
Lower current means thinner cable, smaller fuses and less heat. For a new build where air conditioning is a priority, a 24V or 48V system makes the wiring much easier.
FAQ
Is 24V or 48V better for air conditioning?
Higher voltage means lower battery current. A 48/3000 draws a quarter of the 12V current for the same power.
Can solar run the air conditioner?
Partly. 1,000W of panels can make 500–800W in good sun, about half a rooftop unit’s draw.
Will a 12/4k help?
Victron’s 12/4k is rated 3.4kW continuous at 25°C and helps with surge, but battery drain is the same.
Does a soft starter reduce running power?
No. It lowers the startup surge, which helps the inverter start the compressor, but running watts stay the same.
Can I run the AC from a 2,200W generator with the MultiPlus?
Often yes. Set the AC input limit to the generator, and PowerAssist adds battery power during peaks.
How do I know if my AC needs a soft starter?
Try starting it on the MultiPlus with the RV otherwise lightly loaded. If the inverter reports an overload at compressor start, a soft starter is the usual next step.
