Victron Energy Guide: Every Product Line Explained (2026)

A plain-English Victron Energy guide: inverter-chargers, MPPTs, chargers, DC-DC, shunts, GX devices, Lynx and batteries, and how they fit together.

This Victron Energy guide explains every major Victron product line in plain English: what each box does, which ones you actually need, and how they talk to each other. Victron systems look intimidating on YouTube because of all the blue boxes and cables, but as Will Prowse points out in his beginner walkthrough, most of those cables are for communication. Strip those away and a Victron system is simple: a battery in the middle, things that charge it, things that use it, and a monitor that keeps score.

Will Prowse’s beginner walkthrough of a complete Victron system.

How a Victron Energy System Fits Together

Every Victron build, from a small van to an off-grid cabin, follows the same pattern:

  • Battery bank in the middle (Victron lithium, a third-party LiFePO4, or lead-acid).
  • Charging sources: solar through a SmartSolar or BlueSolar MPPT, the vehicle alternator through an Orion DC-DC charger, and shore power or a generator through a Blue Smart charger or a MultiPlus inverter-charger.
  • Loads: 12/24/48V DC loads through fuses or a Lynx Distributor, and 120V AC loads through a Phoenix inverter or MultiPlus.
  • Monitoring: a SmartShunt or BMV battery monitor, plus an optional Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX that ties it all together and connects to the free VRM portal.

Inverter-Chargers: MultiPlus-II and Quattro

The MultiPlus-II combines an inverter, a charger and a transfer switch. According to Victron’s datasheet, the MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120-50 delivers 2,400W continuous at 25°C (77°F), 5,500W peak, up to 120A of battery charging and a 50A transfer switch that switches over in under 20 milliseconds. Its PowerAssist feature tops up weak shore or generator power with battery power. The Quattro adds a second AC input, so it can manage both shore power and a generator.

Solar Charge Controllers: SmartSolar MPPT

SmartSolar MPPTs have Bluetooth built in; BlueSolar models don’t. Victron names them by maximum PV voltage and charge current: a 100/30 handles up to 100V of panel open-circuit voltage and 30A of charge current. Victron rates the 100/30 for a nominal 440W of PV on a 12V battery and 880W on 24V.

DC-DC Chargers: Orion XS and Orion-Tr Smart

If your house battery is lithium and you charge it while driving, an Orion protects the alternator and charges the battery properly. The Orion XS 12/12-50A is rated for 700W continuous up to 40°C, with 98.5% maximum efficiency and adjustable current from 1 to 50A.

Battery Monitors: SmartShunt and BMV-712

A shunt measures every amp in and out of the battery so you get a real state of charge, not a voltage guess. The SmartShunt works from 6.5 to 70VDC, draws under 1mA, and reports to your phone over Bluetooth. The BMV-712 adds a display and a programmable relay.

GX Devices, VictronConnect and VRM

VictronConnect is the free phone app for setting up individual devices over Bluetooth. A GX device (Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX) gathers data from every connected product, runs features like generator auto-start, and uploads to VRM, Victron’s free remote monitoring portal.

Lynx, Batteries and Protection

The Lynx family replaces a pile of busbars and fuse holders with modules that bolt together. Victron’s own lithium batteries need an external Victron BMS, which is a frequent point of confusion; we cover it in the battery and BMS guide. Cyrix combiners, Argo FET isolators and the Smart BatteryProtect handle dual-battery charging and low-voltage cutoffs.

Which Victron Gear Do You Actually Need?

  • Small van, 12V only: SmartSolar 100/30, SmartShunt, Orion XS, fuses. Add a Phoenix inverter only if you need 120V.
  • RV with shore power: MultiPlus-II (2x120V for 50A rigs), SmartSolar, SmartShunt or Lynx Shunt, Cerbo GX.
  • Off-grid cabin: 48V MultiPlus-II or Quattro, a larger MPPT such as the 250/100, Lynx distribution, Cerbo GX.

FAQ

Is Victron worth the price?

Victron is usually more expensive than budget brands. Buyers pay for the communication between devices, the VictronConnect app, the free VRM portal, and long firmware support. See our full “Is Victron worth it” breakdown.

Do I need a Cerbo GX?

No. Every Smart product works on its own with the VictronConnect app. A Cerbo GX becomes worth it when you have several devices, want remote monitoring, or need features like generator auto-start.

Can I mix Victron with other brands?

Yes. Victron chargers and inverters work with any battery whose voltage and charge settings you know. Battery communication (BMS over CAN) works only with batteries Victron or the battery maker lists as compatible.

What is the difference between SmartSolar and BlueSolar?

SmartSolar controllers have Bluetooth built in. BlueSolar controllers need a separate VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle to connect to the app.
