Victron Smart Battery Sense Review: Specs, Setup and Who It’s For

The Victron Smart Battery Sense is a small wireless sensor that sticks onto a battery and sends its voltage and temperature to Victron MPPT solar chargers. The charger uses those readings to fine-tune its charge voltage. That corrects for cable voltage drop and adds temperature compensation, without running sense wires. Here’s what Victron’s manual says, including the systems where you shouldn’t use one.

How It Works

The sensor joins a VE.Smart Network, which is Victron’s wireless network based on Bluetooth Smart. One or more SmartSolar chargers on that network then use its voltage and temperature data. For a bank of batteries, Victron says it can go on any one of them.

Setup

  1. Connect the two eyelets to the battery terminals. If the leads are too short, extend them with the same or thicker cable.
  2. Stick it to the battery body with the self-adhesive strip.
  3. In VictronConnect, pair it and create a VE.Smart Network with your SmartSolar charger(s).

Two LEDs show status: a blue Bluetooth LED and a red error LED. When both stay lit, it’s a hardware fault.

When Not to Use It

Victron’s manual lists these cases:

  • Systems controlled by a GX device (Color Control GX or Venus GX). There, the Smart Battery Sense “is not needed, or allowed.” The GX handles shared voltage and temperature sensing through DVCC.
  • Systems with a BMV-712 plus its temperature sensor, since the BMV can share that data on the VE.Smart Network.
  • A BMV-702 with a temperature sensor, where Victron suggests adding a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle instead.
  • Check compatibility: only chargers on Victron’s VE.Smart Networking compatible list work with it. BlueSolar models don’t support it, according to Victron’s MPPT overview.

Who It’s For

  • Simple solar systems with one or two SmartSolar MPPTs and no battery monitor or GX device.
  • Batteries that see temperature swings, such as in vans, trailers and boats.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Only voltage and temperature, not current or state of charge. A SmartShunt adds those.
  • Short leads (45cm).
  • Limited to -10°C at the low end of its operating range.

Victron lists every Smart Battery Sense variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.

Worked Example: Correcting Cable Voltage Drop

A SmartSolar 100/30 charging at 30A through a 3m round-trip cable of 6mm² (typical van install). Copper cable of that size has roughly 3mΩ per metre, so the drop is about 30A × 0.009Ω ≈ 0.27V (estimate). Without sensing, the battery would see 14.2 − 0.27 ≈ 13.93V when the charger thinks it’s at absorption. With the Smart Battery Sense reporting the real battery voltage, the charger raises its output to bring the battery to the full 14.2V.

Worked Example: Temperature Compensation for Lead-Acid

For lead-acid batteries, charge voltage should fall as temperature rises. With a typical compensation of −16mV/°C for a 12V battery (common lead-acid figure), a battery at 35°C instead of 25°C needs about 0.16V less: around 14.24V instead of 14.4V absorption. The Smart Battery Sense sends the battery’s real temperature, so the charger adjusts automatically rather than relying on its own internal sensor, which may be in a cooler or warmer location.

Lithium Batteries and Low-Temperature Protection

For lithium, temperature compensation is normally off, but the temperature reading is still useful. A SmartSolar’s low-temperature cut-off setting can use the sensor’s reading to stop charging below a set temperature, such as 5°C, protecting the battery during cold nights in a van or boat.

Placement Tips

  • On the battery body: stick the sensor to the side of the battery for an accurate temperature reading.
  • Terminals: connect the eyelets directly to the battery terminals, not to a busbar, so voltage is measured at the battery.
  • Battery banks: place it on any one battery, ideally one in the middle of the bank, where the temperature is typical of the group.

Setting Up the VE.Smart Network

  1. Open the Smart Battery Sense in VictronConnect and choose Create Network.
  2. Open each SmartSolar and choose Join Existing for the same network.
  3. Check the network icon on each charger’s main screen.
  4. Confirm the charger shows the sensor’s voltage and temperature.

Comparing Battery Sensors

BMV-712 SmartYesWith optional sensorYes

Only one sensor should provide data on a given VE.Smart network. If you already have a SmartShunt or BMV-712, that’s usually the one to use.

Where It Fits Best

The Smart Battery Sense is the simplest way to give one or two SmartSolar chargers accurate battery voltage and temperature without extra wiring. In a small van, boat or trailer system without a battery monitor, it brings much of the charging accuracy of a larger, networked system for a small cost and a few minutes of setup.

FAQ

Do I need a Victron Smart Battery Sense if I have a SmartShunt?

Usually not. A SmartShunt or BMV-712 can share voltage (and temperature, with its sensor) over VE.Smart Networking.

Does it work with a Blue Smart charger?

Victron describes it as a sensor for MPPT solar chargers. Check the VE.Smart compatibility list for other products.

Can one Smart Battery Sense serve two MPPTs?

Yes. Several SmartSolar chargers on the same VE.Smart network can use the data from one sensor.

Does it need a battery to be connected to work?

Yes. It’s powered by the battery it’s measuring, through its fused leads.
