Victron Orion XS vs Renogy is a head-to-head between two 50A DC-DC chargers that cost very different amounts. The Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A is a small, sealed, alternator-only charger with fine current control. The Renogy 12V 50A DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT (RBC50D1S) adds a solar input. Here’s how they compare using only Victron’s datasheet and manual and Renogy’s user manual and product page.

Key Differences
- Solar in one box. The Renogy charges from solar and the alternator at the same time. In a small van that can replace a separate solar controller. Renogy notes that panels with 30V or higher open-circuit voltage need the 50A model and should be wired in parallel.
- Alternator load. The Orion XS can be set anywhere from 1A to 50A. If your alternator is small or your engine idles a lot, you can turn the current down. It also has engine shutdown detection and an adjustable input lockout to protect the starter battery.
- Size and sealing. At 0.33kg and IP65, the Orion XS can mount almost anywhere. The Renogy is larger and heavier.
- Expansion. Victron says you can parallel an unlimited number of Orion XS units, and it reports to a Cerbo GX for DVCC.
- Smart alternators. Both support them. Renogy requires the ignition signal wire, and the Orion XS uses engine-running detection or a remote input.
Which Should You Buy?
- Pick the Orion XS for a Victron-based system, tight spaces, low standby draw or careful alternator management.
- Pick the Renogy if you want solar and alternator charging in one unit at a lower total cost.

Worked Example: Energy Added per Drive
Both chargers top out around 50A, so the alternator charging math is similar. The Victron is adjustable, so you can trade speed for a cooler alternator:
| Charge current | 1-hour drive | 3-hour drive | 6-hour drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50A | ≈ 50Ah | ≈ 150Ah | ≈ 300Ah |
| 30A (Orion XS turned down) | ≈ 30Ah | ≈ 90Ah | ≈ 180Ah |
| 20A (small alternator) | ≈ 20Ah | ≈ 60Ah | ≈ 120Ah |
Estimates before losses. A full bank stops accepting current near the end of the charge.
A 200Ah lithium house battery at 30% needs about 140Ah, which a 50A charger replaces in roughly three hours of driving.
Worked Example: Solar on the Renogy
The Renogy’s solar input takes up to 50V and 660W. A single 200W panel in good sun might deliver 600–900Wh over a summer day, or roughly 50–70Ah at 12.8V (estimate). With an Orion XS, you’d get the same result by adding a separate SmartSolar MPPT, such as a 100/20 for a 200W panel, wired straight to the house battery.
Installing the Orion XS
- Mount it on a flat surface with space around it. The IP65 housing handles damp locations such as under a seat or in an engine bay away from direct heat.
- Run the input cable from the starter battery with a 60–70A fuse close to the starter battery, using 6AWG for runs under 5m, as the datasheet table shows.
- Run the output cable to the house battery with its own fuse.
- Connect the negatives. The Orion XS is non-isolated, so input and output share a common negative.
- Open VictronConnect, choose the battery profile and set the charge current. Start lower if your alternator is small, then raise it while you watch alternator temperature on long drives.
- Choose the on/off method: engine-running detection, or a wired remote input from the ignition.
Installing the Renogy
Follow Renogy’s manual for fuse sizes (75–100A on the starter side) and connect the ignition wire for smart alternators. Wire solar panels in parallel if their open-circuit voltage is 30V or higher, as Renogy specifies.
Choosing for Your Build
Ask four questions before you buy:
- Do you already have a solar charge controller? If so, the Renogy’s built-in MPPT adds little, and the Orion XS is the cleaner fit.
- How big is your alternator? Small alternators and lots of idling favor the Orion XS’s adjustable current.
- Where will it mount? The Orion XS’s 0.33kg IP65 case fits tight or damp spots that a 1.86kg unit may not.
- Which app do you want? If the rest of your system is Victron, the Orion XS shows up in VictronConnect and on a Cerbo GX alongside your battery monitor and solar charger.
Cost of a Complete System
Because the Renogy includes solar, compare like with like:
- Victron path: Orion XS plus a SmartSolar MPPT, with both charge controllers in the VictronConnect app and optional GX monitoring.
- Renogy path: one RBC50D1S covering alternator and solar, with RS485 monitoring through Renogy’s add-on.
Check current prices for each set, since they change often.
FAQ
Can I add solar to an Orion XS system?
Yes. Add a SmartSolar MPPT connected straight to the house battery.
Is the Renogy compatible with lithium?
Yes. It has a Li profile and a user-defined profile.
Can the Orion XS charge from a smart alternator?
Yes. It uses engine-running detection or a remote input, so it works with smart (variable-voltage) alternators.
Which is better for a small alternator?
The Orion XS, because you can set its current anywhere from 1A to 50A in 0.1A steps.
Can I run two Orion XS chargers?
Yes. Victron says Orion XS units can run in parallel for more current.
