NOCO Boost Plus GB40 Review: Specs and How to Use It

Update: The NOCO Boost Plus GB40 remains one of the most compact 1000A jump starters you can buy, at 2.4 lb and $99.95 list on NOCO’s site. I’ve added NOCO’s full spec table, a step-by-step jump starting guide, how it compares with the bigger GB50 and GB70, and worked examples for charging and phone top-ups.

A dead battery always seems to happen at the worst time. A portable jump starter means you don’t have to wait for another car or call for help, as long as you actually keep one in your vehicle.

For this review, I checked out the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 1000A Jump Starter. I looked at its compact size, connected the jumper clamps, tested the built-in flashlight modes, and used the USB charging feature to power smaller devices. This one wasn’t sent to me by NOCO.

In this NOCO Boost Plus GB40 review, I’ll cover the specs, what I tested, the safety features, the pros and cons, and who it’s for.

What I Tested

Compact Size

What stands out most is how compact the GB40 is compared to traditional jump starter setups. It stores easily in a glove box or trunk while still offering enough power for emergencies.

The Clamps

I connected the jumper clamps to show how they attach. NOCO’s spark-proof and reverse polarity protection is designed to prevent sparks and wrong connections, which is reassuring if you don’t jump cars often.

Flashlight Modes

I tested the built-in flashlight modes. Having a light, plus SOS and strobe, is useful at night on the side of the road or when you’re working under the hood.

USB Charging

I also used the USB charging feature to power smaller devices. That makes the GB40 useful beyond jump starting, like keeping your phone alive in an emergency.

How to Jump Start a Car With the NOCO GB40

NOCO designed the GB40 to be mistake-proof, but the order still matters. Here’s the basic sequence from NOCO’s guide:

Screenshots in this post are from my YouTube video.

Pressing the power button.
The red clamp going on the positive terminal.
Connected and ready to start the car.
  1. Turn off the ignition, lights and accessories.
  2. Connect the red (positive) clamp to the positive battery terminal.
  3. Connect the black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal or a solid, unpainted metal ground on the engine or frame.
  4. Press the power button. The Boost LED shows the GB40 is ready.
  5. Start the vehicle. If it doesn’t start, give the GB40 a short rest before the next attempt.
  6. Once the engine runs, disconnect the black clamp first, then the red clamp.
  7. Recharge the GB40 once you’re home so it’s ready next time.

Very low batteries: if the vehicle’s battery is below about 2V, the GB40 may not detect it. NOCO’s Manual Override handles this: hold the button for 3 seconds until the Boost LED flashes. Override bypasses the safety protection, so double-check the clamps before you use it.

NOCO Boost Plus GB40 Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 1000A in a compact, 2.4 lb package
  • Spark-proof and reverse polarity protection
  • Flashlight with SOS and strobe modes
  • USB power bank for phones and small devices
  • IP65 water and dust resistance
  • Fits in a glove box

Cons

  • Rated for engines up to 6.0L gas and 3.0L diesel, so bigger engines need a larger model
  • No built-in air compressor
  • 1-year warranty

Is 1000A Enough for My Engine?

NOCO rates its packs by engine size, which is the number to check. Here’s how the GB40 compares with its bigger siblings:

ModelPeak ampsGas enginesDiesel engines
GB40 Boost Plus1,000AUp to 6.0LUp to 3.0L
GB50 Boost XL1,500AUp to 7.0LUp to 4.5L
GB70 Boost HD2,000AUp to 8.0LUp to 6.0L
Source: NOCO GB40, GB50 and GB70 support pages.

Worked example: a Honda Civic (2.0L), a Toyota RAV4 (2.5L) and a V6 Ford F-150 (3.5L) all sit well inside the GB40’s 6.0L gas rating. A 6.2L V8 truck or a 6.7L diesel pickup is GB70 territory. Cold weather makes engines harder to crank, so if you’re near the top of the range and live somewhere cold, the next size up gives extra margin.

Worked Example: Phone Charging and Recharge Time

TaskNOCO ratingWhat it means
Jump startsUp to 20 per chargePlenty for a season of emergencies
Phone rechargesUp to 4A long day of navigation and calls after a breakdown
Recharging the GB40About 3 hours at 2.1APlug it into a USB wall charger overnight

A simple habit keeps it ready: check the charge level when you change the clocks in spring and fall, and top it up after any use. If you also want an air compressor in the same pack, my AUXBEAM 3500A review covers that style, and the S ZEVZO H021 review covers a higher-amp option.

Who Is It For?

I think the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a great fit for:

  • Daily drivers with cars, small SUVs, and small trucks
  • Motorcycle, ATV, and boat owners
  • New drivers who want a foolproof jump starter
  • Anyone building a vehicle emergency kit

Looking at other car tools on this site? See my AUXBEAM 3500A Jump Starter review if you want a pack with a built-in air compressor, or my S ZEVZO H021 Jump Starter review for a higher-amp option.

Building a Glove Box Emergency Kit Around the GB40

The GB40’s small size makes it the center of a compact car kit. Pair it with a tire gauge, a pair of gloves, a reflective triangle, and a USB cable for your phone. Because the GB40 has its own 100-lumen light with SOS and strobe, you can skip a separate flashlight. NOCO’s operating range of -4°F to 122°F covers most climates, so it can live in the car year-round.
