Reading the Ratings
- 275A continuous is what the switch can carry all day. Size it against your largest continuous load, such as an inverter at full power. For example, a 12V inverter drawing 250A is close to the limit, while a 24V system at the same power draws half the current.
- 455A for 60 seconds covers short surges, such as a motor start.
- 1,250A cranking is for brief engine-starting loads.
These are switch ratings only. You still need a fuse sized for your cable, placed close to the battery.
Ignition Protection
Victron says the switch meets the ISO 8846 ignition protection standard and is suitable for use in an engine room. That matters on boats with gasoline engines, where a spark could ignite fumes. Check your local code (ABYC on US boats) for where switches must go.
Removable Knob
Victron says the knob is removable for isolation or safety purposes. Turn the system off, take the knob with you, and it’s harder for someone to switch it back on while you work.
Who It’s For
- Vans, RVs and boats that need a main battery disconnect.
- Lynx-based systems, where the switch sits between the battery bank and the busbar.
- 48V home or cabin systems under 275A continuous.
Who Needs Something Bigger
- 12V systems with 3,000W-plus inverters, where continuous current can exceed 275A. Check your inverter’s datasheet for its DC input current.
Good to Know Before You Buy
- 275A continuous ceiling.
- No remote control. For remote switching, look at Victron’s Smart BatteryProtect or a BMS-controlled contactor.
- On/off only. It’s a disconnect, not a battery selector.

Worked Example: Is 275A Enough for Your Inverter?
DC current at full inverter power is roughly watts ÷ battery voltage ÷ efficiency:
| Inverter | 12V current (est.) | 24V current (est.) | 48V current (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,200W | ≈ 111A | ≈ 56A | ≈ 28A |
| 2,000W | ≈ 185A | ≈ 93A | ≈ 46A |
| 2,400W (MultiPlus-II 3kVA) | ≈ 222A | ≈ 111A | ≈ 56A |
| 4,000W (MultiPlus-II 5kVA) | ≈ 370A | ≈ 185A | ≈ 93A |
Estimates using 90% efficiency. A 12V system with a 3kVA MultiPlus-II at full power comes in under 275A, with some DC loads on top still fitting. A 12V 5kVA system exceeds it, but the same inverter at 24V or 48V fits comfortably.
Worked Example: Adding DC Loads
A 12V van with a 2,000W inverter (≈ 185A) plus 30A of DC loads (fridge, fan, lights, water pump) totals about 215A at the busiest moment (estimate). That leaves around 60A of headroom below the 275A continuous rating, and the 455A 60-second rating covers short motor starts.
Where the Switch Goes
A common layout in a van or boat:
- Battery positive.
- Main fuse (such as a Class T or MEGA fuse) close to the battery.
- Battery Switch ON/OFF 275A.
- Positive busbar or Lynx Distributor.
- Inverter, chargers and DC distribution.
Placing the switch after the main fuse means the fuse protects the cable all the way from the battery.
Choosing Cable for the Studs
The 3/8″ (9.53mm) studs accept standard heavy-duty lugs. For a 12V system near 200A, cable is often 2/0 AWG (≈ 70mm²) or larger depending on length; follow your inverter’s manual and local codes for the right size. Tighten lugs firmly to the lug or stud maker’s recommended torque and fit protective covers on exposed terminals.
Surface vs Rear Panel Mounting
- Surface mount: the switch sits on a bulkhead or wall, with cables entering through the removable side panels. Easy to retrofit.
- Rear panel mount: only the knob shows through a panel, with the switch body and cables behind it. Tidy for dashboards and electrical panels.
The four removable side panels let you route cables from whichever direction suits your layout.
Using It Day to Day
Turn the switch off when you store the vehicle or boat, when you work on the system, or when you leave for a long trip. On lithium systems, it also lets you fully isolate the bank so small standby loads don’t slowly drain it. Turning chargers and inverters off before operating the switch reduces arcing at the contacts.
Battery Switch vs Smart BatteryProtect vs BMS Contactor
| Device | How it switches | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Switch ON/OFF 275A | Manual knob | Main isolation for storage and service |
| Smart BatteryProtect | Electronic, by voltage or BMS signal | Automatic load disconnect |
| Lynx Smart BMS contactor | Controlled by the BMS | Automatic protection of a lithium bank |
Many systems use more than one: the manual switch as the main isolator, and a BatteryProtect or BMS-controlled contactor for automatic protection.
FAQ
What voltage is the Victron Battery Switch rated for?
Up to 60V maximum operating voltage, so it suits 12V, 24V and 48V systems.
Can I use it in an engine room?
Victron says it meets ISO 8846 ignition protection and is suitable for engine rooms.
Does the knob come off?
Yes. It’s removable for isolation or safety.
Can I use two switches for two battery banks?
Yes. Many builds use one switch per bank, such as one for the house bank and one for the starter battery.
Should the switch go on the positive or negative side?
It’s normally fitted on the positive side, after the main fuse.
