Victron vs Xantrex Inverter-Chargers for RVs

Victron vs Xantrex is the upgrade decision in most RVs. Many coaches ship with a Xantrex Freedom unit, and many owners replace it with a Victron MultiPlus-II. We compare the Victron MultiPlus-II 2x120V 12/3000 and the Xantrex Freedom XC PRO 3000, two 12V, 3kW-class units with built-in transfer switches, using only their official datasheets and manuals.

Where Victron Wins

  • 50A RVs. The 2x120V takes a 120/240V split-phase input and passes up to 50A per leg. In inverter mode it ties L1 and L2 together, so 120V loads on either leg keep running.
  • PowerAssist. On the L1 input it adds battery power when a generator or campground post can’t keep up.
  • Efficiency and idle draw. It has 93% max efficiency and 15W at zero load, with a 4W search mode.
  • System integration. A Cerbo GX ties the inverter, solar, shunt and battery into one VRM dashboard, with DVCC and generator auto-start.

Where Xantrex Wins

  • Raw output. It’s rated 3,000W continuous at 40°C against 2,200W for the Victron at the same temperature, with a longer 5-second surge.
  • Charging. It charges at up to 150A and can recharge a battery from 0V.
  • RV-C. It works natively with RV-C coach networks found in many motorhomes.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Pick Victron for a 50A RV, a full Victron lithium system, or if you want PowerAssist and remote monitoring.
  • Pick Xantrex for a drop-in replacement in an RV-C coach, or if you need the most continuous output from a single 12V unit.

Worked Example: A 50A Motorhome on Battery

A 40-foot motorhome running on a 400Ah 12V lithium bank through the MultiPlus-II 2x120V 12/3000 overnight:

LoadWatts (est.)HoursWh (est.)
Residential fridge (average)80W10800
TVs and satellite receiver120W3360
Microwave1,100W0.25275
CPAP40W8320
Total≈ 1,755Wh

Estimates based on common appliance ratings. With roughly 10% inverter losses, that’s about 1,930Wh, or around 38% of a 400Ah lithium bank’s 5,120Wh. The microwave is the biggest single load and sits well within the 2,400W continuous rating.

Worked Example: Generator Sharing With PowerAssist

On a 3,500W generator delivering about 28A at 120V (estimate), set the MultiPlus-II’s input current limit to 25A. When the air conditioner and microwave run together and briefly exceed that, PowerAssist adds battery power so the generator isn’t overloaded. Once the load drops, the charger takes the spare generator capacity and recharges the battery.

Upgrade Path for an Existing RV

  1. Plan the DC side first: a 2x120V 12/3000 needs a 400A fuse and 2x AWG 1/0 cables under 5m, per Victron’s manual.
  2. Choose the battery: lithium suits the 120A charger and the high inverter current.
  3. Add monitoring: a SmartShunt or Lynx Smart BMS shows the battery’s true state of charge.
  4. Add a GX device: a Cerbo GX with a GX Touch gives one dashboard for inverter, solar and battery, plus VRM remote access.
  5. Add solar: SmartSolar MPPTs report to the same GX device and share charge settings through DVCC.

Victron in a Full System

Much of the MultiPlus-II’s appeal comes from how it works with other Victron products. With a Cerbo GX:

  • DVCC coordinates charge voltage and current across the MultiPlus-II, solar chargers and a managed lithium battery.
  • Generator auto-start uses the Cerbo’s relay to start a generator by battery state of charge or load.
  • VRM gives remote monitoring and alerts from anywhere with an internet connection.

Split-Phase Shore Power and 240V Loads

On 50A split-phase shore power, the 2x120V passes both legs through, so 240V loads such as some residential appliances run as normal. When shore power is gone, the unit ties L1 and L2 together at 120V, so every 120V circuit stays powered from the battery and 240V loads wait for shore power.

Monitoring and Remote Control

A Digital Multi Control or VE.Bus Smart dongle lets you switch modes and set the input current limit from inside the coach. With a GX device online, the same controls are available in VRM, which is handy for checking the battery or switching to charger-only mode while you’re away from the RV.

Which Is Easier to Install?

Both are fixed-install units that should be wired by a qualified installer, especially on the AC side. The Victron is configured through VictronConnect with an MK3-USB or VE.Bus Smart dongle, or remotely through VRM. If your RV already has a Victron SmartSolar or SmartShunt, the MultiPlus-II joins the same app and GX dashboard.

FAQ

Does the Victron 2×120 run 240V appliances on battery?

No. In inverter mode the output is 120V on both legs, and 240V loads only run when split-phase shore or generator power is connected.

Will a Victron work with my RV’s 50A shore cord?

Yes. The 2x120V is built for 50A split-phase input.

Can I parallel two MultiPlus-II 2x120V units?

Victron’s datasheet supports parallel operation of MultiPlus-II 2x120V units for more power, configured with Victron’s VE.Bus tools.

What battery chemistry does the MultiPlus-II support?

Lead-acid and lithium. Charge voltages are adjustable, and Victron lithium batteries integrate through a BMS and GX device.
