Victron MultiPlus-II: What It Does and Who It Suits

Victron MultiPlus-II review: 120V inverter-charger specs (2,400W to 4,000W), 120A charger, 20ms transfer, PowerAssist, idle draw, pros, cons and who it suits.

This Victron MultiPlus-II review covers Victron’s best-selling inverter-charger. One box does three jobs: a pure sine inverter, a battery charger and an automatic transfer switch. When shore power or a generator is connected, it passes power through and charges the battery. When the input drops, it switches to inverter power in under 20ms.

Features

  • PowerAssist: tops up a weak shore or generator supply with battery power.
  • Input current limit to avoid tripping campground breakers.
  • Parallel up to 6 units, plus split- and three-phase setups.
  • Second AC output live only when shore power is present (for loads that shouldn’t drain the battery).

Pros

  • Proven, configurable, and integrates with Cerbo GX and VRM.
  • Search mode cuts idle draw to 2–4W.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Configuration needs VictronConnect or VE.Configure and an interface.
  • Higher price than all-in-one competitors (check current prices).

Who It’s For

RVs and vans with shore power, boats, and off-grid or backup systems that need a charger and transfer switch.

Factory Settings to Check

  • Battery type. It ships set for Victron Gel Deep Discharge, with 14.4V absorption and 13.8V float. Lithium owners must change this in VictronConnect or VEConfigure.
  • AC input current limit. Set it to your shore post or generator.
  • UPS feature, dynamic current limiter and WeakAC. These are generator-related. See our generator settings guide.
  • AES and search mode. Victron says AES cuts no-load consumption by about 20%, and search mode cuts it by about 70%. Search mode turns off at 48W and on at 72W by default.
  • Bulk protection. It limits bulk charging to 10 hours.

Troubleshooting Tips and What the LEDs Mean

Overload LED flashing / onLoad above rating / shut downReduce load
Low battery + overload flash togetherDC ripple above 1.5VrmsShorter, thicker cables, bigger bank

Continuous Output at 40°C and the 48V 5kVA Model

Output falls as ambient temperature rises. Victron’s datasheet lists these 40°C ratings alongside the 25°C figures, plus the 48/5000 model:

ModelContinuous at 25°CContinuous at 40°CMax charge
12/3000/120-502,400W2,200W120A
12/4k/160-503.4kW3.1kW160A
24/3000/70-502,400W2,200W70A
48/3000/35-502,400W2,200W35A
24/5000/120-954,000W3,700W120A
48/5000/70-954,000W3,700W70A

In a hot engine bay or a sealed cabinet, plan around the 40°C column.

Battery Current Worked Examples

ModelLoadApprox. battery current
12/3000/120-502,400W at 93%about 215A
24/3000/70-502,400W at 94%about 106A
48/3000/35-502,400W at 95%about 53A
24/5000/120-954,000W at 95%about 175A

The same 2,400W load needs a quarter of the current at 48V that it needs at 12V, which shrinks cable size and voltage drop.

Standby Energy and Generator Sizing

Zero-load power runs whenever the inverter is on. 13W over 24 hours is about 310Wh a day, while search mode at 3W uses about 70Wh. On generator power, the 12/3000’s 120A charger at about 14.4V takes roughly 1.7kW, plus whatever AC loads pass through. Set the input current limit to the generator’s rating and let PowerAssist cover short peaks from the battery.

Worked examples are arithmetic estimates from the published ratings above, not test results. Real numbers depend on temperature, cable runs, battery state and load.

12V, 24V or 48V?

  • 12V models suit vans and RVs that already have a 12V house system, but need the heaviest cables.
  • 24V models halve the battery current for the same power, a common middle ground in larger RVs and boats.
  • 48V models suit cabins and home backup with larger battery banks and solar arrays, where cable runs and current are easiest to manage.

Whichever you choose, the AC side stays the same 120V, so household loads plug in normally.

FAQ

Can it run an RV air conditioner?

It can if the air conditioner’s running watts fit within 2,400W continuous and its startup surge within the 5,500W peak. Check your unit’s label.

What’s the difference from the Quattro?

The Quattro has two AC inputs.

Does it need a Cerbo GX?

No, but it adds monitoring and VRM remote access.

Is the MultiPlus-II UL listed?

The 120V datasheet lists UL458 on the 12/3000, 12/4k and 24/3000, and UL1741 on the 48/3000. The 48/5000 lists both.

Can it run in parallel?

Yes, with up to six identical units.

What does PowerAssist do?

When AC loads exceed the input current limit you set for shore or generator power, PowerAssist adds battery power through the inverter to cover the difference, so the breaker or generator isn’t overloaded.

Can it work as a UPS?

Yes. The built-in transfer switch moves loads to the inverter quickly enough for computers and most electronics when shore or grid power drops.
