Victron Lynx Smart BMS NG: Specs and How It Protects Lithium NG Banks

This Victron Lynx Smart BMS NG review covers the battery management system Victron built for its newer Lithium NG LiFePO4 batteries. It is not the same product as the older Lynx Smart BMS, which works with Victron’s Lithium Battery Smart range. The NG version comes in 500A and 1000A sizes, each with a built-in main contactor, and it bolts straight onto the M10 Lynx busbar system. Victron calls it the most complete BMS option for Lithium NG.

Victron Energy explains how the Lithium NG battery and BMS NG work together.

What It Does

  • Contactor as a safety net. Victron describes the contactor as a secondary safety system that disconnects the battery if the primary controls (allow-to-charge, allow-to-discharge and DVCC) fail. It can also act as a remote main switch.
  • Pre-charge circuit. It limits the inrush current when you connect inverters, so you don’t need a separate pre-charge resistor.
  • Built-in battery monitor. You get state of charge, voltage, current and history without adding a SmartShunt.
  • DVCC control. With a GX device such as a Cerbo GX, it automatically controls compatible Victron inverter-chargers, Orion XS chargers and MPPTs.
  • Alternator ATC mode. The programmable relay can switch off an alternator’s external regulator before the battery disconnects.
  • Fuse monitoring. It reads fuse status from up to four Lynx Distributors.

Capacity Limits

Victron allows up to 50 batteries in a 12V or 24V bank and up to 25 with 48V batteries. That works out to a maximum of 192kWh at 12V, 384kWh with 24V batteries and 128kWh with 48V batteries. Victron says up to five Lynx BMS units can run in parallel, each with its own bank, for redundancy.

Who It’s For

  • Large RV, boat and off-grid builds using Victron Lithium NG batteries.
  • Builders already using the Lynx Distributor and a Cerbo GX.
  • It is not for third-party batteries, and not for the older Lithium Battery Smart range. Those need the standard Lynx Smart BMS or another Victron BMS.

What to Watch

  • The datasheet lists no reverse-polarity protection, so check polarity twice before you connect.

Manual Settings Worth Checking

On first power-up, the BMS auto-detects system voltage, the number of batteries in series and parallel, and the cells per battery. Victron says to double-check each one in VictronConnect. A firmware update always starts a full charge cycle, raising the charge voltage limit from 13.5V to 14.0V (12V systems).

Setup and Troubleshooting Tips

  • System dead after a low-battery shutdown. If no charge voltage appears within 5 minutes after a low cell, low SoC or low-temperature event, the BMS enters OFF mode. Turn the remote on/off or the VictronConnect soft switch off for 5 seconds, then back on. It will close ATC first so chargers can start.
  • Won’t power up at all. Check that the remote on/off is on, or that the wire loop between pins 10 and 11 is in place.
  • Won’t charge in the cold. Charging requires a battery temperature of at least 5°C.
  • Red LED flashes 5 or 6 times. That’s a pre-charge timeout or high pre-charge current. Look for a short, or loads below the minimum resistance.
  • Red LED flashes 7 or 14 times. That points to a wrong system voltage. The allowed ranges are 9–15V (12V), 16–30V (24V) and 32–60V (48V).
  • Red LED flashes 8 times. Current stayed above 600A (1200A) for 5 minutes.
  • Keeps switching the charger off and on. Victron says this is normal cell imbalance. Charging stops whenever a cell hits 3.60V while balancing continues, and it can take up to 12 hours.
  • Undervoltage alarm won’t clear. Every cell must reach 3.2V first. Then check the BMS cables.

Daily Energy Use Worked Example

With the system on, the 500A model draws about 2.6W, roughly 62Wh a day, and the 1000A model about 4.2W, roughly 100Wh a day. In standby that drops to about 0.6W, or 14Wh a day, so an unattended boat or cabin barely notices it.

Worked examples are arithmetic estimates from the published ratings above, not test results. Real numbers depend on temperature, cable runs, battery state and load.

FAQ

Do I still need a SmartShunt with the Lynx Smart BMS NG?

No. Victron built a battery monitor into it.

Will it work with my Battle Born or other third-party battery?

No. Victron designed it specifically for Victron Lithium NG batteries.

500A or 1000A?

Size it to your largest continuous current. For example, a 12V inverter pulling around 250A fits the 500A unit, and heavier systems need the 1000A version. This is an estimate; check against your inverter’s datasheet.

Does a firmware update shut the system down?

No. Victron says the contacts and contactor hold their state, and they open after 120 seconds only if the update fails.

Does it have fans?

Yes, two. Check them on a high-temperature alarm.
