This Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 & 100/50 review covers the two most popular charge controllers in Victron van and RV builds. Both accept up to 100V of panel open-circuit voltage. The 100/30 delivers up to 30A (440W nominal PV at 12V), and the 100/50 up to 50A (700W at 12V). Both have Bluetooth built in.

What We Like
- Bluetooth and VictronConnect for easy lithium setup and harvest history.
- VE.Direct for Cerbo GX and VRM.
- Small, efficient, and widely supported.
What to Watch
- 100V limit restricts series strings, especially in cold climates.
- For larger arrays, step up to the 150V range.
Which to Buy
100/30 for up to about 440W on 12V; 100/50 for up to about 700W on 12V.
Settings That Matter
- Battery voltage. Set it manually instead of leaving auto-detect.
- LiFePO4. Victron’s manual defaults are 14.2V absorption for 2 hours and 13.2V float on 12V. Use your battery’s values if they differ.
- Max charge current. Lower it for small batteries.
- Expert mode. This unlocks low-temperature cut-off, re-bulk offset and tail current.
Setup and Troubleshooting Tips
- Error 33, PV overvoltage. The string’s open-circuit voltage exceeded 100V. Re-wire with fewer panels in series, and allow for cold-morning voltage rise.
- Error 38/39 or 80–88, PV input shutdown. Update the firmware, check the battery voltage setting, and check whether another charger is set higher (for example an inverter-charger equalising at 17V). For Error 38, disconnect PV, then the battery, wait 3 minutes, and reconnect the battery first.
- Not charging in the morning. PV must be 5V above the battery to start and stay 1V above to keep going.
- Battery not filling. DC loads may be using the solar power, the battery cables may have too much voltage drop, or absorption may be set too low.
- “Externally controlled.” A GX device with DVCC or a BMS is in charge. That’s normal.
- Bluetooth issues. Update VictronConnect and check that no other phone is connected.
Worked Example: Panels in Series
The 100V limit applies to the coldest morning, when panel voltage rises above the label value. A practical approach is to add 10–15% to the label Voc.
| Panel Voc (label) | Panels in series | Nominal Voc | Cold estimate (+15%) | 100V controller? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22V | 3 | 66V | about 76V | Fits |
| 22V | 4 | 88V | about 101V | Too close: use parallel or 150V |
| 37V | 2 | 74V | about 85V | Fits |
| 37V | 3 | 111V | about 128V | No: needs a 150V model |
Matching Panels to the Controller
Charge current sets the useful array size. At about 14.4V, 30A is roughly 430W, which is why Victron lists 440W nominal at 12V for the 100/30. The 100/50 at 50A handles about 700W on 12V, and double each figure on 24V.
- 100/30 on 12V: two 200W panels in series or parallel.
- 100/50 on 12V: three or four 200W panels, wired so Voc stays under 100V.
- 100/50 on 24V: up to 1,400W nominal, often as two parallel strings of two panels.
What a Day of Solar Looks Like
As a rough planning figure, 400W of panels in a location with about four peak sun hours produces around 1.6kWh before losses. After wiring and battery losses that’s roughly 100Ah into a 12.8V bank, enough to run a 40W-average compressor fridge plus lights. The controller’s own draw of about 30mA at 12V is under 1Ah a day.
VictronConnect stores daily yield history, so you can check real-world harvest against estimates like these after the first week.
Worked examples are arithmetic estimates from the published ratings above, not test results. Real numbers depend on temperature, cable runs, battery state and load.
Mounting Tips
Victron’s manual calls for vertical mounting on a non-flammable surface with the power terminals facing down, which helps the heat sink cool the unit. There is no fan, and full output is rated up to 40°C, so leave clear space above and below and avoid sealed lockers.

FAQ
Can I overpanel these?
Extra PV watts are limited by the controller, but never exceed 100V open circuit.
12V and 24V?
Both auto-select 12 or 24V.
Do I need a battery temperature sensor?
Optional; a Smart Battery Sense or BMV-712 can share data via Bluetooth.
Can I connect 600W to a 100/30?
The datasheet says the controller limits input when more PV is connected. Stay within 100V open-circuit and 35A short-circuit current.
Do I need a fuse?
Yes. Fuse the battery cable near the battery and size the cable for it.
Can I add a second controller later?
Yes. Victron MPPTs can run side by side on one battery bank, each with its own array. A GX device can coordinate them, but it isn’t required.
How do I update the firmware?
Open VictronConnect, connect over Bluetooth and the app offers any available firmware update for the controller.
