What Size Victron DC-DC Charger Do I Need? Orion XS vs Tr 30A

What size Victron DC-DC charger do you need? Compare Orion-Tr Smart 18A/30A and Orion XS 50A against your alternator, battery and wiring, step by step.

What size Victron DC-DC charger you need depends on your alternator, your house battery and how much driving you do. A DC-DC charger sits between the starter battery and the house battery and charges the house bank while the engine runs. Victron’s two main lines are the isolated Orion-Tr Smart (models up to 400W, such as 12/12-18 and 12/12-30) and the non-isolated Orion XS (12/12-50A, 700W). Here’s how to pick.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

EXPLORIST life covers the 50A Orion XS.

Step 1: Check Your Alternator

The charger pulls more current from the alternator than it outputs (losses plus any voltage step-up). Stock alternators on many vans handle 30A easily; a 50A draw at idle in heat is harder on them. The Orion XS lets you dial the current down, which is its biggest sizing advantage. Check your vehicle maker’s alternator rating; we can’t give a universal number.

Step 2: Match the Battery

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries accept high charge current. A rough rule: charge time ≈ amp-hours to refill ÷ charge amps. Refilling 100Ah takes about 3.3 hours at 30A or 2 hours at 50A. Estimate, ignoring the slower final stage.

Step 3: Wire Length and Gauge

Starter-to-house cable runs in vans and RVs are often long. More current means thicker cable and bigger fuses at both ends. Follow the gauge tables in Victron’s manual.

Step 4: Isolated or Not?

Isolated (Tr) models keep the two battery negatives separate, which matters on some boats and where the chassis is not a reliable negative. In most vans, non-isolated XS works fine.

Quick Picks (Estimates)

  • Small van, 100–200Ah lithium, short drives: Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-18 or 12/12-30.
  • Van or truck camper, 200–400Ah lithium: Orion XS 50A, dialed to what your alternator handles.
  • RV with large bank: two units in parallel or the XS 1400.

Worked Example: A Small Van With a Stock Alternator

A compact van with a stock alternator, a 100Ah lithium house battery and short daily drives of about 45 minutes:

  • An Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 puts back about 22Ah in 45 minutes (estimate: 30A × 0.75h).
  • With 400W of solar on the roof, alternator charging tops up what solar misses on cloudy days.
  • The 30A draw is gentle on most stock alternators.

Worked Example: A Truck Camper With Longer Drives

A truck camper with a 300Ah lithium battery and drives of two to three hours between camps:

  • An Orion XS 50A puts back about 100–150Ah per drive day, refilling a third to half of the bank (estimate).
  • The 1–50A adjustment lets you set 40A on a hot day at low speed and 50A on the highway.
  • At 98.5% peak efficiency, very little of the alternator’s output is lost as heat.

Worked Example: A Large RV Bank

A Class C RV with a 600Ah lithium bank:

  • Two Orion XS 50A units in parallel deliver up to 100A, about 200–300Ah over a two- to three-hour drive (estimate).
  • Each unit gets its own fused cables.
  • Check the chassis alternator rating before going this high. Many RV owners use the XS 1400 or two units, but only where the alternator has the capacity.

Estimating Alternator Load

The charger’s input current is a little higher than its output, because of conversion losses and any voltage step-up. As a rough guide, a 50A output at 14.2V is about 710W, so with 98.5% efficiency the input is about 720W, or around 53A at a 13.5V alternator (estimate). Add the vehicle’s own loads to see the total alternator demand.

Sizing Checklist

  1. Find your alternator’s rated output from the vehicle maker.
  2. Subtract the vehicle’s own loads, such as lights, climate control and electronics.
  3. Choose a charger current that leaves comfortable headroom.
  4. Check your house battery’s recommended charge current.
  5. Estimate your typical drive time and the amp-hours you want back.
  6. Pick the smallest model, or setting, that meets those numbers.

Isolated vs Non-Isolated in Practice

  • Non-isolated (Orion XS): shares the negative between starter and house batteries. Fine for most vans, trucks and RVs.
  • Isolated (Orion-Tr Smart): keeps negatives separate, useful on boats with isolated negative systems and when converting between 12V and 24V.

Combining With Solar

Solar and alternator charging work well together. On sunny days, solar may fill the battery before you drive. On cloudy days, the DC-DC charger does more of the work. Both can join a VE.Smart network so they use the same battery readings.

Reading the Model Names

Victron’s names follow input voltage, output voltage and output current. The Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 takes 12V in and gives 12V out at 30A. The Orion XS 12/12-50A follows the same pattern at 50A. The XS 1400 is named for its power class instead.

FAQ

Is the Orion XS better than the Orion-Tr Smart?

It’s more powerful and more efficient (98.5%), but it isn’t isolated. See which matters for your build.

Will a 50A DC-DC charger hurt my alternator?

It can stress small alternators. Set the XS lower (it’s adjustable in 0.1A steps) if you’re unsure.

Do I need a DC-DC charger with a smart alternator?

Smart (variable voltage) alternators often don’t charge lithium properly without one. The Orion-Tr Smart includes engine-running detection.

Can I start with an Orion-Tr 30A and upgrade later?

Yes. Many owners start at 30A and add or switch to an Orion XS as their battery bank grows. Use cable sized for the larger unit from the start to save rewiring.

Does a DC-DC charger work while idling?

Yes, as long as the alternator voltage stays above the shutdown setting. On low idle in heat, set a lower current.
