Victron SmartShunt IP65 vs IP21: Which Battery Monitor Should You Buy?

The Victron SmartShunt IP65 and the standard IP21 SmartShunt measure your battery the same way. Victron’s two datasheets list the same accuracy, the same power draw and the same app. The main difference is the housing. Here’s what’s identical, what changes and which one makes sense for your build.

A SmartShunt installation video.

Both come with two cables with a 1A fuse for the “+” connection. The IP65 datasheet specifies them as 1.5m cables.

What Stays the Same

Both shunts give you state of charge, time-to-go, voltage, current and history in VictronConnect. Both connect to a Cerbo GX over VE.Direct for VRM monitoring. Both can share battery voltage, current and temperature with SmartSolar chargers and Orion chargers over VE.Smart Networking. The auxiliary input on both can monitor a starter battery, the midpoint of a series bank, or battery temperature with the optional sensor.

Where the IP65 Version Belongs

  • Boat bilges and lockers where spray or condensation is likely.
  • Under-vehicle or chassis battery boxes on overlanders and trailers.
  • Outdoor cabinets and other places with dust or water.

Where the IP21 Version Is Fine

  • Inside RVs, vans and cabins, in a dry electrical bay.
  • Lynx or busbar setups in a closed compartment.

An IP21 rating protects against solid objects 12.5mm and larger and against vertically dripping water. It doesn’t protect against jets or immersion.

Verdict

Buy the IP65 for anywhere wet, dusty or outdoors. Buy the IP21 for a dry indoor install. You get the same monitor and the same data either way.

What the IP Ratings Actually Mean

The two digits in an IP rating describe protection against solids and against water.

RatingSolids (first digit)Water (second digit)
IP21Objects 12.5mm and larger, such as fingersVertically dripping water
IP65Dust-tightLow-pressure water jets from any direction

So the IP65 version handles a hose-down or road spray, while the IP21 needs a dry, sheltered compartment.

Worked Example: Three Real Locations

Battery box on a trailer tongueRoad spray, dust, rainIP65
Sailboat battery locker under a cockpit seatCondensation, occasional splashIP65
Dry closet in an off-grid cabinDryIP21
Overland truck with a battery under the trayDust and mudIP65

Worked Example: Midpoint Monitoring

The auxiliary input can watch the midpoint of a series bank. Say you have two 12V lead-acid batteries wired in series for 24V. Each battery should sit at about half the bank voltage. If the bank reads 25.6V, the midpoint should read close to 12.8V. A growing deviation from that halfway point shows one battery is drifting from the other, so you can rebalance or check it early. Example values. This works the same on both versions.

Using the Temperature Input

With Victron’s temperature sensor on the aux input, the shunt reports battery temperature. Over VE.Smart Networking, SmartSolar and Orion chargers can use that reading for temperature-compensated charging of lead-acid batteries, and for low-temperature charge protection on lithium where the charger supports it.

Cable Routing Tips for the IP65

  • The IP65 datasheet lists 1.5m cables with a 1A fuse for the + connection, so plan the mounting spot within that reach of the battery positive.
  • Seal any holes where cables pass into a battery box with glands or grommets so the box itself stays dry.
  • Keep the shunt’s Bluetooth range in mind. A metal battery box can weaken the signal, so check you can still connect before closing it up.

What You’ll See After Install

Once connected, both versions show the same data in VictronConnect:

  • State of charge as a percentage and time-to-go at the current draw
  • Battery voltage, current and power, with charge shown as positive and discharge as negative
  • History: deepest discharge, average discharge, cycle count and total Ah drawn
  • Alarms you can set for low voltage, high voltage or low state of charge

The first full charge synchronises the state of charge, so give the battery a complete charge after installing either version.

Choosing the Size, Same for Both

Choose the current rating from your biggest continuous load. Both versions come in 300A, 500A, 1000A and 2000A. For most vans and small boats, 500A gives comfortable headroom.

FAQ

Is the Victron SmartShunt IP65 more accurate?

No. Both list ±0.4% current accuracy.

Can I mount the IP21 version outdoors in an enclosure?

Only inside a sealed, dry enclosure. Otherwise, choose the IP65.

Does the IP65 version work with a Cerbo GX?

Yes. It has the same VE.Direct port, so it shows on a GX device and VRM.

Can I use the IP65 inside a dry van too?

Yes. It works anywhere the IP21 does; you’re paying for protection you may not need.

Do the two versions show differently in VictronConnect?

No. Both show the same screens: state of charge, time-to-go, history and settings.

Is the IP65 version harder to install?

No. The wiring is the same: battery negative to one side of the shunt, everything else to the other, and the fused + lead to the battery positive.
