Victron Inverter Microwave Guide: Can a MultiPlus Run a Microwave?

A Victron inverter microwave setup works well as long as you size the inverter by the microwave’s input watts, not its cooking watts. A “1,000W” microwave usually draws far more from the outlet. Here’s how to check, using Victron’s MultiPlus-II and Phoenix datasheets.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

Cooking Watts vs Input Watts

The big number on the door is cooking power. The nameplate on the back lists input power or amps. A microwave sold as 1,000W often lists about 1,500W input (12.5A at 120V).

Example figures only. Read your own microwave’s nameplate.

A 1,200VA-class inverter can’t run a typical 1,000W microwave. A 3kVA MultiPlus-II runs it alongside a fridge and lights.

Battery Current at 12V

1,500W ÷ about 90% efficiency ≈ 1,670W from the battery. At 12.8V, that’s about 130A. That’s why Victron’s manual recommends 400–1,200Ah for the 12/3000 and specifies a 400A DC fuse with 2x AWG 1/0 cable for runs up to 5m.

Runtime Math (Estimate)

Microwaves run in short bursts. Five minutes a meal, three meals a day:

  • 1,670W × 15 minutes ≈ 420Wh per day
  • On a 200Ah Victron lithium (2,560Wh), that’s about 16% of the battery

Microwaves are energy-cheap because they run so briefly. The current is the hard part, not the energy.

Tips

  • Turn off search mode or set its threshold so the microwave keypad wakes the inverter. Victron’s MultiPlus-II default switches search mode off above 72W.
  • Mind the clock display. A microwave clock can keep the inverter awake out of search mode.
  • Use 24V or 48V for bigger kitchens with an induction cooktop as well.
  • On shore power, PowerAssist covers microwave peaks on a weak 15A or 30A supply.

How to Read a Microwave Nameplate

The label on the back or inside the door frame usually lists one of three things: input watts, input amps, or both. If it lists only amps, multiply by the supply voltage to get watts. A label showing 12.5A at 120V means about 1,500W of input power. If the label shows a range, size for the higher figure. Over-the-range and convection models often list more than countertop models with the same cooking power, so check the actual unit you plan to use rather than a similar one.

Worked Example: A 12V Van Kitchen

A van with a 12V 200Ah lithium battery, a MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120 and a 1,000W-cooking microwave that lists 1,500W input:

  • Microwave draw from the battery: 1,500W ÷ 0.9 ≈ 1,670W, or about 130A at 12.8V (estimate).
  • Fridge and lights running at the same time: about 100W more, so roughly 140A in total (estimate).
  • The inverter’s 2,400W continuous rating at 25°C leaves around 700W of headroom for a kettle-free kitchen (estimate).
  • Three five-minute sessions a day use about 420Wh, so a 400W solar array on a sunny day can replace that energy alongside the fridge (estimate).

The takeaway: the microwave is easy on the battery’s capacity, but the cables, fuse and battery discharge rating must handle well over 100A.

Worked Example: The Same Kitchen at 24V

Move that system to 24V with a MultiPlus-II 24/3000 and a 24V battery bank, and the same 1,670W from the battery becomes about 65A at 25.6V (estimate). Half the current means thinner cable for the same voltage drop, a smaller fuse and less heat at every connection. That’s why Victron offers 24V and 48V versions of the MultiPlus-II, and why larger RVs and boats often choose them.

Worked Example: Microwave Plus Coffee Maker

Running a 1,500W microwave and a 900W drip coffee maker together asks for about 2,400W at the outlet, which sits right at the MultiPlus-II 12/3000’s continuous rating at 25°C and above its 2,200W rating at 40°C (estimate). In a warm engine bay or a hot summer van, it’s smoother to run them one after the other. A MultiPlus-II 12/4k, with 3.4kW continuous, handles both at once with room to spare.

Shore Power and PowerAssist

On a 15A pedestal (about 1,800W at 120V), a microwave and a space heater together can exceed the supply. With PowerAssist enabled, the MultiPlus-II tops up the shortfall from the battery so the pedestal breaker stays on. Set the AC input current limit in VictronConnect to match the pedestal, and the inverter supplies the rest only while the peak lasts.

Wiring Checklist

  1. Read the MultiPlus-II manual’s table for cable size and DC fuse for your model and cable length.
  2. Keep the battery-to-inverter run short. Victron’s 12/3000 recommendation of 2x AWG 1/0 assumes runs up to 5m.
  3. Use a battery or BMS rated for the inverter’s peak current, not just its continuous draw.
  4. Add a SmartShunt or BMV so you can watch the actual current when the microwave starts.
  5. Have the AC wiring, earthing and any shore connection checked by a qualified electrician.

Choosing an Inverter Size

  • Microwave only, 12V, 120V supply: MultiPlus-II 12/3000 is a comfortable fit.
  • Microwave plus other kitchen loads: MultiPlus-II 12/4k, or step up to 24V.
  • Microwave plus induction cooktop: plan for 24V or 48V and a larger battery bank.

FAQ

Is a modified sine wave fine?

Victron inverters are pure sine wave, which microwaves need to run properly.

Can a SmartShunt show the draw?

Yes. You’ll see the battery current spike to about 130A on 12V.

Does a convection microwave need more?

Convection and grill modes often list higher input power. Check the nameplate.

Will a microwave trip search mode on and off?

It can. If the inverter is in search mode, the microwave’s small standby draw may not wake it, so the keypad stays dark. Switch search mode off, or lower its threshold, when you want to cook.

How big should the battery be for a microwave?

Capacity matters less than current. A 200Ah lithium battery has plenty of energy for daily microwave use, but its BMS must allow the 130A-plus draw on a 12V system.

Can I run a microwave from a Phoenix 12/1200?

Not a typical 1,000W microwave. Its 1,000W continuous rating at 25°C is below the roughly 1,500W input most of those models need.
