Delta 3 Max for Wheelchairs, Scooters and Insulin Fridges

Charge a power wheelchair or mobility scooter and keep an insulin fridge cold with the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max: charges per fill, DC vs AC, outage and travel tips.

Medical disclaimer: I’m not a medical professional. This is not medical advice. Talk to your doctor, your equipment supplier (DME), and your device’s manufacturer before relying on any battery for medical equipment. Always have a backup plan.

The EcoFlow Delta 3 Max can keep three often-overlooked medical needs going through an outage or a road trip: charging a power wheelchair, charging a mobility scooter and keeping insulin or other medication cold. Each one has its own energy math, and in one case the inverter’s idle draw uses more energy than the device itself. Here’s how to plan for each.

EcoFlow’s Warning

EcoFlow’s manual says the Delta 3 Max isn’t intended for life-sustaining medical equipment, and it advises consulting your equipment’s manufacturer before use. Wheelchair and scooter chargers and medication fridges aren’t life support, but they’re essential. Follow your device maker’s charging guidance and keep a backup plan.

Power Wheelchair Charging

Typical
Charger draw~30–200W
Charge time~4–8h
Delta 3 Max at 200W~7–8h of charging ≈ about one full charge of a large chair
Delta 3 Max at 100W~14–15h of charging ≈ one to two charges

The University of California, Berkeley disability preparedness info sheet on charging chairs in outages is a good primer. The key points:

  • Use the chair’s own charger in an AC outlet. Don’t improvise DC connections to the chair’s batteries.
  • Set AC Timeout to “Never”, because chargers taper near full and the low draw could trip the timeout.
  • Charge before the battery runs low, in daylight if you’ll need to recharge the station from solar or a generator.
  • Big chairs with large battery packs may use most of the Delta 3 Max’s energy in one charge, so plan to recharge the station afterward.

Mobility Scooter Charging

A typical scooter charger draws about 180W, so a full Delta 3 Max supplies roughly 8 hours of charging, about one full charge for most scooters (our estimate). That makes it practical for road trips:

  • Charge the scooter overnight at a campsite or hotel from the station, then recharge the station while driving or from a wall outlet the next day.
  • At 44.8 lb, the station travels in the car, not on the scooter.
  • You can’t fly with the Delta 3 Max (it’s over the FAA’s 160Wh limit). Mobility-aid lithium batteries have their own FAA limits: generally 300Wh, with spares limited to one up to 300Wh or two up to 160Wh. Check the FAA chart and your airline.

Insulin and Medication Fridges: DC Beats AC

This is where setup matters most. A small medication fridge might run at about 45W, but only about 30% of the time, an average of roughly 14W.

ConnectionEst. runtime on the Delta 3 Max
AC outlet (14W + ~25W inverter idle)~42–45h (under 2 days)
12V DC, if the fridge has a 12V input~124–132h (about 5 days)

On AC, the inverter’s idle draw uses more energy than the fridge itself. If your medication fridge or travel cooler has a 12V input, use the Delta 3 Max’s 12V car socket (126W max) and set DC Timeout to “Never”. If it’s AC-only, keep the inverter on, set AC Timeout to “Never” and plan to recharge every day or two.

Medication storage notes:

  • Follow the drug manufacturer’s and pharmacist’s temperature guidance, and use a fridge thermometer.
  • Ask your pharmacist how long your medication can stay out of the fridge, so you know your margin if power fails.
  • Insulin travel cases and cooling wallets are useful backups.

A Combined Outage Plan

NeedEst. daily energy
Medication fridge on 12V~340Wh
One power wheelchair charge (200W × 6h)~1,200Wh+
Phones and a lamp~100Wh

That’s close to one full Delta 3 Max per day, so recharging is part of the plan: a generator (run outdoors only) at up to 1,800W gets you to about 80% in roughly 68 minutes, or 500W of solar over a sunny day. Our home backup guide covers generators and priorities, and our CPAP guide covers another common medical load.

Preparedness Checklist

  1. Note the wattage on each charger and fridge label.
  2. Set the AC and DC timeouts to “Never.”
  3. Keep the Delta 3 Max charged; Storm Guard holds it at 100%.
  4. Test a full wheelchair or scooter charge from the station on a normal day.
  5. Register with your utility’s medical or access-needs program if available.
  6. Share the plan with family or caregivers.

Bottom Line

For mobility-device charging and medication cooling, the Delta 3 Max is a practical, quiet backup with enough capacity for about one large-chair charge or several days of a 12V medication fridge. Delta 3 Max Mobility and Medication FAQ

Can the Delta 3 Max charge a power wheelchair?

Yes, using the chair’s own charger. Expect about one full charge of a large chair per Delta 3 Max charge (our estimate).

How many times can it charge a mobility scooter?

About once per full charge at a typical 180W charger draw (our estimate).

How long will the Delta 3 Max keep an insulin fridge cold?

About 5 days on 12V DC, or under 2 days on AC, for a fridge averaging 14W (our estimates).

Can I fly with the Delta 3 Max for my wheelchair?

No. Mobility-aid batteries have separate FAA limits; the Delta 3 Max is far over 160Wh.
