EcoFlow Delta 3 Max for Home Backup: What It Runs and How Long

EcoFlow Delta 3 Max for home backup: estimated runtimes for a fridge, freezer, router, PC, sump pump, heater and window AC, plus UPS and safety tips.

The EcoFlow Delta 3 Max is one of the most popular 2kWh power stations for home backup, and for good reason: 2,048Wh of LiFePO4 storage, 2,400W of output, a sub-10ms UPS switchover and a 68-minute 0–80% wall charge. But what will it actually run during a power outage, and for how long? This guide gives estimated runtimes for the appliances people care about most, explains the settings that matter, and covers the safety rules.

Testing note: We’re filming a blackout-night simulation, a 24-hour fridge test and a UPS test, but they aren’t done yet. Runtimes below are calculated estimates or third-party figures, clearly labeled. We’ll swap in measured results as each video goes live.

How We Estimate EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Runtime

Formula for AC loads: hours ≈ 2,048Wh × efficiency ÷ (load watts + inverter idle). We use 80% (cautious) to 85% (typical) efficiency and about 25W of inverter idle. For reference, The Solar Lab measured 79% efficiency and ~27W idle on this unit.

That means about 1,640–1,740Wh of usable AC energy from a full charge. Two rules follow:

  • Small loads lose a lot to idle draw. A 20W router effectively costs ~45W while the inverter is on.
  • Big loads are short. Anything near 1,500W runs about an hour.

What the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Runs in an Outage

ApplianceTypical wattsEstimated runtime
Wi-Fi router + modem~20W~36–39 hours
7 cu ft chest freezer~30W average~30–32 hours
Full-size refrigerator~67W average (1,200W+ start)~18–19 hours; owners report ~22h
Efficient fridge (OutageMath figure)~58W~30 hours (calculator estimate)
Desktop PC + monitor~200W~7–8 hours
1/3 HP sump pump (duty-cycled)~160W average~9 hours (OutageMath: 11h)
Microwave or 1,500W space heater1,500W~1.1 hours of on-time
5,000–8,000 BTU window AC~450–700W~2.5–3.5 hours (estimate)

Every row is an estimate. Your appliance’s real draw, the room temperature and how often it cycles will change the result.

Fridge and Freezer Backup

Fridges are the #1 reason people buy a station like this. A typical full-size fridge uses about 1.6kWh a day, or about 67W on average, but it pulls 1,200W or more for a moment when the compressor starts. The Delta 3 Max’s 2,400W continuous and 4,800W surge ratings handle that easily.

Our math says about 18–19 hours. A Reddit thread on exactly this question shows owners getting about 22 hours and concluding that 19–22 hours is normal once inverter overhead is counted. For the detailed breakdown, see how long the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max runs a refrigerator.

Critical setting: set the AC timeout to “Never” in the EcoFlow app. Owners have reported the AC output “randomly” shutting off with a fridge plugged in. The cause is the AC Auto Timeout setting (one owner says it defaults to 2 hours), and the manual specifically says to change it when keeping medicine or other valuables cold.

The Delta 3 Max as a UPS for Your PC, Router and NAS

The Delta 3 Max switches to battery in under 10ms. That’s fast enough that many computers, routers and network-attached storage devices should ride through a power cut without rebooting. We’ll confirm with our own PC on camera. One Amazon owner uses theirs as “battery back up for sensitive equipment. Servers, printers, phone systems, internet, sump pumps, etc.”

Pass-through limits in the US: 15A for up to 3 hours, 12A continuously. For the cleanest UPS setup:

  1. Plug the Delta 3 Max into the wall and your equipment into the Delta 3 Max.
  2. Set a charge limit that leaves the battery full, or use Storm Guard, which charges to 100% and won’t discharge unless the grid fails.
  3. Keep total load well under the pass-through limit.
  4. Remember that X-Boost is unavailable during AC pass-through.

Cooking and Coffee in a Blackout

High-wattage kitchen gear works, but in short bursts. A 1,500–1,800W induction burner, kettle or griddle gets roughly 55–65 minutes of total on-time per charge, more at lower settings. Coffee makers, microwaves and kettles only run for a few minutes at a time, so they use less than their wattage suggests.

EcoFlow’s team answered a Best Buy question about running a fridge and a 1,200W microwave together, saying the unit can handle that combination as long as both are within its specs, surge included. They cited the 3,400W figure, but that’s X-Boost. Plan around the real 2,400W continuous limit.

Heating and Cooling: The Hard Loads

  • Space heaters: a 1,500W heater drains the battery in about an hour. X-Boost (3,400W) is designed for heating loads, but it doesn’t add capacity. A heater is a poor use of 2kWh. A heated blanket (~60W) runs ~19–20 hours.
  • Window AC: a small 5,000–8,000 BTU unit at ~450–700W may run about 2.5–3.5 hours (our estimate). Inverter-type window ACs start more gently. We plan to test a Midea 8,000 BTU inverter model.
  • Furnace blower: many gas furnaces need power for the blower and controls. Hard-wired furnaces need an electrician to connect safely. Never improvise.

How to Stretch the Battery

  1. Prioritize. Fridge, internet and phones first; heaters and AC last.
  2. Open the fridge less. Fewer door openings means fewer compressor cycles.
  3. Use DC where you can. USB-C (100W) and the 12V socket skip inverter losses.
  4. Turn AC off when nothing needs it. The idle draw adds up.
  5. Recharge in the gaps. The 68-minute 0–80% wall charge works with a generator too. Solar adds up to 500W during the day. See our EcoFlow Delta 3 Max solar setup guide.

Home Backup Safety Rules

  • Never back-feed your home’s panel through an outlet with a “suicide cord.” It’s illegal in most places and can kill utility workers. Any panel or transfer-switch connection needs a licensed electrician and a listed transfer switch. Note that the Delta 3 Max has no 30A outlet, so a typical generator-style transfer switch needs the right inlet and adapter. We haven’t verified EcoFlow Smart Home Panel compatibility, so we don’t recommend one here.
  • Run it indoors and keep it dry. It’s battery-powered with no exhaust, so there’s no carbon monoxide, but follow the manual’s ventilation guidance.
  • Use properly rated extension cords for big loads.

Sending One to Family Abroad?

Many reviews come from buyers shipping a Delta 3 Max to relatives in places like Cuba or Mexico. The US model’s outlets are 120V only; it has no 220V output. Make sure the appliances at the destination are 120V-compatible before you ship.

Is the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Enough for Home Backup?

For essentials (fridge, freezer, internet, lights, phones, a laptop or PC) through a typical outage of a day or so, yes, especially if you can recharge from a generator or solar. It can’t power a whole house, and it’s not expandable. If you need multi-day coverage without recharging, consider the expandable Delta 3 Max Plus.
