How to Charge the Delta 3 Max From a Generator

Charge the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max from a generator: sizing an inverter generator, setting charge speed, Smart Generator compatibility, pass-through and safety.

Can you charge the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max from a generator? Yes, and it’s one of the smartest outage setups you can build: the station runs silently through the night, and a generator refills it quickly in the morning. Getting it right comes down to matching the Delta 3 Max’s charge speed to your generator’s real output. Here’s how.

Testing note: Our generator-charging test is on the filming schedule. This guide uses EcoFlow’s specs and general generator practice. Generator outputs vary, so check your model’s manual.

The Basics

  • Input: plug the Delta 3 Max’s AC charging cable into the generator’s 120V outlet.
  • Maximum AC charging: 1,800W (100–120V, 15A). With X-Stream fast charging, 0–80% takes about 68 minutes.
  • Charge speed is adjustable in the EcoFlow app. This is the key setting for generators.
  • Compatibility: EcoFlow says any generator’s AC output works, and lists its Smart Generator 3000 and 4000 (Dual Fuel) as compatible for charging.

Sizing a Generator for the Delta 3 Max

Generator running wattsSuggested Delta 3 Max charge speedApprox. 0–80% time (our estimate)
~1,000W (small inverter)~700–800W~2–2.5h
~1,800–2,000W~1,200–1,400W~1.2–1.5h
~2,500W+Up to 1,800W~68 min

Leave headroom. Set the charge speed well below the generator’s running rating, not its starting or peak rating. Running a small generator at 100% for long periods is hard on it, and if it overloads, it will shut down or the station will see unstable power. If you also run other appliances from the generator at the same time, subtract their draw first.

Step by Step

  1. Place the generator outdoors, far from windows, doors and vents, on a dry, level surface. Never in a garage or porch, even with the door open.
  2. Start the generator and let it stabilize for a minute.
  3. Lower the Delta 3 Max’s charge speed in the app to suit the generator (see the table above).
  4. Plug in the station’s AC charging cable using a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord if needed.
  5. Watch the app for a minute to confirm steady input.
  6. When you’re done, unplug the station first, then shut down the generator.

Inverter vs. Conventional Generators

Inverter generators produce cleaner, more stable power and handle varying loads more gracefully, which makes them the easier match for electronics and battery chargers. Conventional open-frame generators can work too, but if the station’s input readings fluctuate or charging stops and starts, lower the charge speed. EcoFlow doesn’t publish a voltage-quality requirement for the AC input, so we won’t claim conventional units are incompatible; test yours.

Pass-Through While on the Generator

While the generator charges it, the Delta 3 Max can pass power through to your plugged-in loads (US: 15A for up to 3 hours, 12A continuous). Remember that the generator then supplies both the charging and your loads, so size accordingly. X-Boost is unavailable while the unit is charging or in pass-through.

Smart Generator: Charging Only

EcoFlow lists the Smart Generator 3000 and 4000 (Dual Fuel) as compatible with the Delta 3 Max for charging. We haven’t seen automatic generator start/stop documented for the Delta 3 Max, so plan on starting the generator yourself unless EcoFlow confirms otherwise for your setup. Our Max vs Max Plus outage comparison covers the difference.

A Generator + Station Outage Routine

  1. Evening: the station is full and runs the fridge, router and CPAP silently overnight.
  2. Morning: run the generator for 1–2 hours to refill the station and power coffee and other heavy loads directly.
  3. Midday: shut the generator off; solar (up to 500W) can top up in the afternoon.
  4. Evening: a short generator run if needed, then silence again.

This burns far less fuel than running the generator all day and keeps noise off overnight. Our home backup guide builds a full plan around this pattern, and our EcoFlow Delta 3 Max review compares every charging method.

Safety Checklist

  • Generators outdoors only; install battery-powered CO alarms indoors.
  • Let the generator cool before refueling; store fuel safely.
  • Keep connections dry; don’t run cords through puddles.
  • Never back-feed a home panel through an outlet. Panel connections need a licensed electrician and a listed transfer switch or interlock.

Troubleshooting

  • Generator bogs down or stalls: lower the charge speed.
  • Charging stops and starts: the power may be unstable. Lower the charge speed or try an inverter generator.
  • Breaker trips on the generator: you’re over its outlet or running rating; reduce the charge speed or other loads.

Delta 3 Max Generator FAQ

Can I charge the Delta 3 Max with a generator?

Yes, through the AC input at up to 1,800W. Lower the charge speed for smaller generators.

What size generator do I need for the Delta 3 Max?

For full-speed charging, about 2,500W running or more. A 1,000W inverter generator works at a reduced charge speed.

Does the Delta 3 Max work with the EcoFlow Smart Generator?

EcoFlow lists the Smart Generator 3000 and 4000 (Dual Fuel) as compatible for charging. We haven’t seen auto-start documented for the Delta 3 Max.

Can I run appliances from the Delta 3 Max while the generator charges it?

Yes, via pass-through, within its 12A continuous pass-through rating. The generator supplies both.
