The Math Behind Fridge Runtime

A fridge doesn’t run constantly. The compressor cycles on and off, so what matters is the average draw over a day, not the wattage on the label.

Step 1: Find daily energy use. Check the yellow EnergyGuide label (kWh per year ÷ 365) or measure with a plug-in watt meter for 24 hours. A Reddit owner’s full-size fridge used about 1.6kWh a day, which works out to about 67W on average.

Step 2: Count usable battery. The Delta 3 Max has 2,048Wh, but converting DC to AC loses energy. We use 80–85% efficiency. The Solar Lab measured 79%. That’s about 1,640–1,740Wh usable.

Step 3: Add inverter idle draw. The inverter uses power just being on. The Solar Lab measured ~27W, and a Reddit thread cites ~22Wh per hour. We use 25W.

Step 4: Divide. 1,640–1,740Wh ÷ (67W + 25W) ≈ 18–19 hours.

Notice that idle draw adds about 37% to a 67W fridge’s consumption. For small, efficient fridges, idle draw can be as much as the fridge itself.

Why Owners Say “Only 22 Hours”

A Reddit thread titled “Only getting about 22 hours on the fridge” sums up a common surprise. Commenters pointed to the ~22Wh/h inverter overhead and concluded that 19–22 hours on a full-size fridge is normal. The same expectation gap shows up in an Amazon review: “it only lasted 4 hours at 400 watts.” The math (2,048Wh × ~80% ÷ 400W ≈ 4.1h) shows that’s normal too. If your fridge runtime is in this range, your unit is working as expected.

Will the Delta 3 Max Start a Refrigerator?

Yes. A fridge compressor can pull 1,200W or more for a moment at startup. The Delta 3 Max is rated at 2,400W continuous and 4,800W surge, so a household fridge is well within range. You can also run other small loads at the same time.

EcoFlow’s team answered a Best Buy question saying the unit can handle a fridge/freezer plus a 1,200W microwave as long as both are within the unit’s specs, surge included. Keep the combined running load under 2,400W. Don’t count on the 3,400W X-Boost figure for that, because X-Boost is meant for heating loads.

Mini Fridges and Chest Freezers

These smaller appliances are where the Delta 3 Max really shines.

• Chest freezers are well insulated and open from the top, so cold air stays in. A 7 cu ft model averaging ~30W is estimated at 30–32 hours. We plan to test a best-selling 7.0 cu ft chest freezer and a Frigidaire 5.0 cu ft model.
• Mini fridges like the Igloo 3.2 cu ft vary widely. We’ll measure one in our 24-hour test.

12V Fridges: The Runtime Champions

A 12V compressor fridge plugged into the Delta 3 Max’s 12V car socket (on the back, 126W max) skips the inverter entirely. At ~15W average, we estimate about 115–120 hours, or about 5 days. An Amazon reviewer reported that their ICECO VL45 Pro fridge ran “for a little over 5 days” at 36°F, which matches the math.

7 Ways to Run Your Fridge Longer on the Delta 3 Max

1. Set AC timeout to “Never.” Otherwise the AC output can shut off when the fridge compressor cycles off. Owners on Reddit report this as “random” shutoffs. The fix is the Auto Timeout setting in the app.
2. Keep the door closed. Every opening triggers more compressor time.
3. Fill empty space with water jugs. Thermal mass helps the fridge hold temperature.
4. Turn the thermostat up slightly while staying within food-safe temperatures.
5. Turn off other AC loads you don’t need. They don’t add idle draw, but they drain the same battery.

7. Use Storm Guard before a forecast storm so the battery is at 100% when the power goes out.

Fridge Plus Other Loads

In a real outage you’ll want the fridge plus internet, phones and lights. A rough estimate for fridge (67W) + router and modem (20W) + a few LED lights and phone charging (~20W) is about 107W of load plus 25W idle, or about 12–13 hours. Is the Delta 3 Max Right for Fridge Backup?
