How Many Watts Does a Refrigerator Use? (Typical Numbers + Runtime)

How many watts does a refrigerator use? A modern full-size fridge typically draws about 100–250W while the compressor runs, with a startup surge several times higher. It cycles on and off, so its daily energy is usually around 1–2 kWh. Those are the numbers you need for backup power.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

How Many Watts Does a Refrigerator Use? Typical Ranges

Fridge typeRunning wattsStartup surgeTypical daily energy
Mini fridge50–100W200–500W0.5–0.9 kWh
Top-freezer (ENERGY STAR)100–150W600–1,200W~1.0–1.3 kWh
Side-by-side / French door150–250W800–1,500W~1.5–2.2 kWh
12V compressor fridge (van)40–60WLow (soft start)0.3–0.7 kWh
Inverter-compressor fridge50–150W (variable)LowVaries

Typical ranges, not measurements of a specific model. Check the EnergyGuide label (kWh/year ÷ 365) or measure yours.

Why Running Watts Aren’t the Whole Story

  • Duty cycle: the compressor runs maybe 30–50% of the time, more in hot kitchens or when the door is opened often
  • Defrost heaters can briefly pull 300–600W
  • Ice makers add energy

Finding Your Fridge’s Real Numbers

  1. EnergyGuide label: kWh/year ÷ 365 = daily kWh. For 600 kWh/yr, about 1.6 kWh a day.
  2. Plug-in watt meter: measure for 24 hours or more for a true average.
  3. Nameplate amps: a maximum for sizing circuits, not typical use.

Runtime on Backup Power

Example math, assuming a 1.5 kWh/day fridge, 90% usable battery and 88% inverter efficiency:

Backup sourceUsable energyFridge runtime
1 kWh power station~0.8 kWh~13 hours
3.6 kWh power station~2.9 kWh~2 days
13.5 kWh home battery~12 kWh~8 days (fridge only)

Inverter idle draw shortens these. Size the inverter for surge: 1,000W or more for most full-size fridges.

Worked Example: From EnergyGuide to Backup Battery

Illustrative fridge: an EnergyGuide label of 650kWh a year and a running draw of 150W.

StepMathResult
Daily energy650 ÷ 365about 1.78kWh
Average hourly1,780 ÷ 24about 74W average
Implied run time74 ÷ 150compressor on about half the time
From battery through inverter (assume 90%)1.78 ÷ 0.9about 1.98kWh a day
Runtime on a 5kWh usable battery5 ÷ 1.98about 2.5 days

Real use can be higher in a hot kitchen or with frequent door openings. The FTC’s EnergyGuide figure comes from a standard test, so it’s a good baseline. See how to read an appliance label and what is a kilowatt-hour.

Refrigerator Types Compared

TypeTypical running wattsTypical daily energyNotes
Mini fridge50–100W0.6–1kWhSmall but not always efficient per cubic foot
Top-freezer, full size100–200W1–1.5kWhUsually the most efficient full-size style
Side-by-side / French door150–250W1.5–2kWhIce makers and dispensers add use
12V compressor fridge (RV/van)40–60W0.4–0.8kWhRuns directly on DC
Chest freezer50–100W0.6–1kWhWell insulated; good for outages

Typical ranges; your EnergyGuide label or a plug-in meter gives the real number.

Sizing Backup Power for a Fridge

  1. Inverter: continuous rating above running watts, peak rating above startup surge. A 1,000W pure sine inverter is common for a single fridge. See what size inverter do I need.
  2. Battery: daily kWh × days of backup ÷ inverter efficiency.
  3. Solar to keep up: daily kWh ÷ local peak sun hours ÷ about 0.75 for system losses. Illustrative: 1.8kWh ÷ 5 hours ÷ 0.75 ≈ 480W of panels.

Getting More Runtime During an Outage

  • Keep doors closed. The USDA says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without power.
  • Set the fridge to 40°F or below and the freezer to 0°F, per USDA guidance.
  • A full freezer holds temperature about 48 hours (24 if half full), according to the USDA.
  • Pre-cool before an expected outage.

FAQ

Can a 1,000W inverter run a fridge?

Usually, if it’s pure sine with good surge. Check the fridge’s startup draw.

How many solar panels do I need to run a fridge?

For 1.5 kWh a day, roughly 400–500W of panels in decent sun, plus a battery for nights.

Do new fridges use less power?

Generally yes. ENERGY STAR models are more efficient than older ones.

How many amps does a refrigerator use?

Running watts ÷ 120V; a 150W fridge draws about 1.25A running. See how many amps does a refrigerator use.

Does a fridge use more power in summer?

Yes. Warmer rooms make the compressor run longer.
