Victron Lithium Battery 12.8V Smart: Sizes, Specs and BMS Needs

This Victron Lithium Battery 12.8V Smart review covers Victron’s own LiFePO4 batteries, sold in sizes from 50Ah to 330Ah. They differ from most drop-in lithium batteries in one big way. The battery monitors and balances its cells, but it has no internal disconnect. It must be wired to an external Victron BMS, which switches off chargers and loads when a cell goes too high, too low or too cold.

Shared specs: 2,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge (3,000 at 70%, 5,000 at 50%), 92% round-trip efficiency, charge voltage 14.0-14.4V (14.2V recommended), float 13.5V, discharge from -20°C to +50°C, charge from +5°C to +50°C, IP22.

What We Like

  • Bluetooth cell data. VictronConnect shows individual cell voltages, temperature and alarms, which makes a weak or unbalanced cell easy to spot.
  • Built to scale. Up to 20 batteries in series, parallel or both, for up to 84kWh at 12V.
  • System-level protection. The BMS can shut down a MultiPlus, an MPPT and an Orion together, instead of the battery abruptly cutting off all power.
  • High current. The 200Ah unit is rated for 400A continuous discharge.

What to Watch

  • A BMS is mandatory. Budget for a SmallBMS, VE.Bus BMS V2, Lynx Smart BMS or similar. Victron offers six BMS models and a selection guide in the battery manual.
  • Cold-weather charging. Charging is only allowed above +5°C. Capacity also falls in the cold: the 100Ah gives 80Ah at 0°C.
  • IP22. It’s meant for a dry indoor space, not an exposed locker.
  • Price. Victron itself notes LiFePO4 costs more than lead-acid up front and pays back through longer life.

Who It’s For

It suits builders running a full Victron system who want BMS-controlled shutdowns, cell-level data and a single brand for warranty support. If you want a simple drop-in replacement for a lead-acid battery with no extra wiring, a battery with an internal BMS is easier.

How the BMS Protection Works

The battery’s internal system balances cells and reports to an external BMS over M8 cables. According to the datasheet, the BMS raises a pre-alarm when any cell drops below 3.1V. It disconnects loads below 2.8V and stops charging above 3.75V or at high or low temperature. Without a BMS (smallBMS, VE.Bus BMS V2 or Lynx Smart BMS), nothing shuts the system down.

Setup Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

  • No BMS fitted. This is the most serious mistake. The battery can be over-discharged or overcharged.
  • Charging in the cold. Charging is only rated from +5°C. Use a low-temperature cut-off or BMS control.
  • Wrong charge voltages. Set every charger to around 14.2V absorption and 13.5V float, with temperature compensation off.
  • Building 48V from four 12V batteries. Victron recommends as few batteries in series as possible. Build 24V from 25.6V batteries, and 48V from two 25.6V batteries.
  • Storage. The datasheet gives a maximum storage time of 1 year at 25°C.
  • Lithium NG confusion. The newer Lithium NG batteries use the Lynx Smart BMS NG, not these BMS models.

Worked Example: Sizing a Van or Boat Bank

Start with a daily energy budget, then compare it against the Wh figures in the spec table.

LoadDaily use
Compressor fridge, 40W average960Wh
LED lighting100Wh
Laptop and phones150Wh
Water pump and fan80Wh
Totalabout 1,290Wh

A 12.8/200 holds 2,560Wh, so it covers about two days of this budget if you plan to use roughly 80% of capacity. A 12.8/100 at 1,280Wh would need recharging every day.

Inverter Fit

Check the maximum continuous discharge against your inverter. A 3,000W inverter at about 90% efficiency draws roughly 260A at 12.8V, which fits the 400A rating of the 12.8/200 and 12.8/330 but not the 200A of a single 12.8/100. Two 100Ah batteries in parallel share the current.

Recharge Time

Using the recommended charge current, a 12.8/200 at 100A goes from 20% to full in a little under two hours plus the final taper. At the 30A recommended for the 12.8/50, a 50Ah battery from empty takes about 1.7 hours.

Worked examples are arithmetic estimates from the published ratings above, not test results. Real numbers depend on temperature, cable runs, battery state and load.

Series and Parallel Math

Series connections add voltage and parallel connections add amp-hours. Two 12.8/200 batteries in series make a 25.6V, 200Ah bank of 5,120Wh; the same two in parallel make 12.8V, 400Ah, also 5,120Wh. Energy is the same either way, so choose the voltage that suits your inverter and charger.

FAQ

What does the BMS actually do?

It gives a pre-alarm when a cell drops below 3.1V. It disconnects loads below 2.8V and stops charging above 3.75V or at unsafe temperatures.

Can I build 48V from 12V batteries?

Yes, but Victron recommends two 25.6V batteries in series for 48V, because four 12V units need more balancing time.

How long will it last?

Victron rates 2,500 cycles to 80% capacity at 80% depth of discharge.

Can it go on its side?

Yes, except the 12.8/330, per the datasheet.

Is the internal resistance low enough for an inverter?

The datasheet lists 0.8mΩ for the 12.8/100. Victron’s MultiPlus-II tables still set a minimum bank size for each model, so check the manual.

How many can I parallel?

Up to 20 batteries per BMS.
