Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A: A Compact 50A DC-DC Charger Guide

This Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A review covers Victron’s compact DC-DC charger for charging a house battery from a vehicle alternator. It delivers up to 50A, about 700W at 14V, from a box that weighs 330g. That’s more than double the 18A to 30A of the older Orion-Tr Smart 12/12 models. It’s also IP65 rated and peaks at 98.5% efficiency.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

What We Like

  • Works with smart alternators. Euro 5 and Euro 6 smart alternators often drop their voltage while driving. The Orion XS accepts a wide input range, and its engine-shutdown detection switches it on only when the alternator is charging.
  • Adjustable current. Set it in 0.1A steps to protect a small alternator.
  • Input lock-out turns it off if the starter battery voltage falls below a set level, so it won’t flatten the engine battery.
  • Low-temperature shutdown helps protect lithium batteries.
  • VE.Direct with DVCC connects it to a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX. VE.Smart Networking can use voltage, temperature and current data from a SmartShunt, BMV or Smart Battery Sense.
  • Parallel units. Victron allows an unlimited number in parallel.

What to Watch

  • No galvanic isolation listed. Victron’s datasheet doesn’t list isolation for the Orion XS. If you need separate input and output grounds, the isolated Orion-Tr Smart offers 200V isolation.
  • Heat. Full power is rated up to 40°C with good airflow. In a hot engine bay or closed cabinet, it scales back sooner.
  • No synchronised charging with other chargers over VE.Smart Networking.
  • The 70A version is IP20, for dry indoor spaces only.

Who It’s For

Vans, trucks and RVs with a 12V starter system and a 12V lithium house bank of about 100Ah or more that can take 50A. Owners of large banks can parallel two units.

Manual Settings That Matter

  • Battery preset. Pick lithium or enter your battery’s absorption and float voltages. For lithium, the manual says absorption time is fixed at 2 hours by default.
  • Alternator type. The default is “smart alternator”, which starts charging at 14V, uses a 13.3V delayed start after 120 seconds and shuts down at 13.1V. The “regular alternator” option uses 13.8V and 13.5V instead.
  • Input voltage lock-out. In power supply mode, this decides when the output is active.
  • VE.Smart Networking. It can take battery voltage, temperature and current from a SmartShunt, BMV or Smart Battery Sense. Victron notes the Orion XS does not support synchronised charging.

Setup and Troubleshooting Tips

  • Stops charging while driving. Euro 6 smart alternators can switch off for long stretches, so the starter battery falls to about 12.6V and the XS thinks the engine is off. Lower the start and shutdown voltages, or wire an external engine-running signal to the L-pin (more than 8V forces charging on).
  • Charge current lower than set. The XS cuts current to keep its input above the shutdown voltage. Thin or long input cables make this worse. Victron’s install table calls for 6AWG under 5m and 4AWG for 5–10m.
  • Hot location. Above 40°C, output drops 1.5% per degree. Above a heat sink temperature of 90°C, it reduces power.
  • Flat starter battery. Emergency reverse charge in VictronConnect charges the starter battery from the house battery for 15 minutes, then allows 5 minutes to start the engine.
  • Unit won’t start after install. Check that the remote on/off wire bridge has been refitted.

Charge Time Worked Example

At its full 50A, an Orion XS returns 140Ah to a 200Ah lithium bank that started at 30% in about 2.8 hours of driving. Set to 30A to protect a smaller alternator, the same top-up takes about 4.7 hours. The 0.1A adjustment steps make it easy to find the right balance for your vehicle.

On the input side, 700W at 98.5% efficiency means roughly 53A from a 13.5V starter circuit. That’s why the manual’s cable sizes matter, and why 4AWG is the largest cable the terminals take.

Worked examples are arithmetic estimates from the published ratings above, not test results. Real numbers depend on temperature, cable runs, battery state and load.

Victron lists every Orion XS variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.

Driving Time vs Amp-Hours Returned

These are estimates at the full 50A setting, before the battery reaches absorption and current tapers:

Driving timeAmp-hours returned (est.)Energy at 12.8V (est.)
30 minutesabout 25Ahabout 320Wh
1 hourabout 50Ahabout 640Wh
2 hoursabout 100Ahabout 1.28kWh
3 hoursabout 150Ahabout 1.9kWh

A typical drive day can refill most of a 200Ah lithium bank, which is why the Orion XS pairs so well with solar on vans and trucks.

Install Checklist

  1. Use 6AWG input cable for runs under 5m, or 4AWG for 5–10m, as the manual’s table lists.
  2. Fuse both the input and output cables as the manual specifies.
  3. Mount it with clear airflow, away from engine heat.
  4. Choose the battery preset and alternator type in VictronConnect before the first drive.

FAQ

Can it be used as a power supply?

Yes. The output voltage can be set in VictronConnect.

Will 50A overload my alternator?

Check your alternator’s rating. You can lower the current in VictronConnect.

Do I need a D+ wire?

Usually not. The manual notes many Euro 6 vehicles no longer provide a usable D+ signal anyway.

Can I run two in parallel?

Yes. Victron allows any number of units in parallel.

Is it isolated?

Isolation isn’t listed. Use an Orion-Tr Smart isolated model if negatives must stay separate.

Does it work with lead-acid house batteries?

Yes. Choose a preset or enter custom absorption and float voltages for your battery.
