Victron Inverter-Chargers Compared: MultiPlus, Quattro and RS

Victron inverter-chargers combine three jobs in one box: a pure sine wave inverter, a battery charger and an automatic transfer switch. Plug in shore power or a generator and they pass it through while charging your battery. Unplug, and they switch to battery power fast enough that laptops keep running.

Features Every Victron Inverter-Charger Shares

  • PowerControl and PowerAssist. Set a maximum shore or generator current. The unit charges only with what’s left over, and with PowerAssist it adds battery power when loads exceed the limit.
  • Second AC output on the MultiPlus-II, live only when shore power is present, for loads like a water heater that shouldn’t drain the battery.
  • Parallel, split-phase and three-phase. Up to 6 MultiPlus-II units in parallel; two identical units make 120/240V split phase.
  • GX and VRM. Pair with a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX for remote monitoring on Victron’s free VRM portal.

Inverter-Charger or Plain Inverter?

If you never plug into shore power or a generator, a Phoenix inverter is simpler and often draws less at idle. The Phoenix VE.Direct 12/1200 (120V) lists 11W zero-load and 1–3W in ECO mode. If you do plug in, the MultiPlus-II replaces a separate charger and transfer switch.

Idle Draw Matters Off-Grid

The MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120-50 lists 13W at zero load, 9W in AES mode and 3W in search mode. 13W around the clock is about 312Wh a day (estimate).

How to Choose

  1. Battery voltage: 12V for vans and small RVs, 24V or 48V when continuous loads pass about 2,000W.
  2. Shore power type: 30A or single 120V suits the MultiPlus-II 120V; 50A split-phase suits the 2x120V.
  3. Sources: shore plus generator needs two inputs (Quattro) or a manual changeover.
  4. Market: Multi RS Solar, EasySolar-II GX and the Inverter Smart are 230V products. Check before buying in North America.

MultiPlus-II vs Quattro in Practice

Both share the same inverter and charger technology. The Quattro’s second AC input means shore power and a generator can both stay connected, and the Quattro picks whichever is live. With a MultiPlus-II, a second source needs an external transfer switch, such as a VE Transfer Switch or a manual selector. If your boat or RV has only one AC source, the MultiPlus-II covers it.

Charger Power Compared

Model (120V)Max charge current
MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120120A
MultiPlus-II 24/3000/7070A
MultiPlus-II 48/3000/3535A
MultiPlus-II 48/5000/7070A

From Victron’s MultiPlus-II 120V datasheet. At 48V, 35A is about the same charging power as 140A at 12V.

Setting Up an Inverter-Charger

  1. Choose the battery voltage and model.
  2. Size the DC fuse and cables from the manual’s table.
  3. Set the battery type, charge voltages and AC input current limit in VEConfigure, VictronConnect (with the VE.Bus Smart dongle) or a GX device.
  4. Connect a Cerbo GX for monitoring, DVCC and VRM.
  5. Test shore power, inverter mode and the transfer between them.

Adding Solar

Every Victron inverter-charger works with SmartSolar MPPT charge controllers on the DC side. The MPPT charges the battery, and the inverter-charger supplies AC loads from it. A Cerbo GX coordinates both so the solar is used first and shore power fills in.

Expanding Later

MultiPlus-II units can be paralleled (up to six per phase) for more power, or configured for split phase. Starting with one unit and adding a second later is a common way to grow a system, as long as the second unit is the same model.

Monitoring Options

VictronConnect with the VE.Bus Smart dongle shows battery voltage, AC input and load on a phone. A Cerbo GX adds a full system view and VRM remote monitoring, and the Digital Multi Control panel adds a physical on/off switch and current-limit knob.

FAQ

Which Victron inverter-charger is best for a 50A RV?

The MultiPlus-II 2x120V. It passes 50A per leg but inverts 120V only.

Can I program a MultiPlus-II from my phone?

Bluetooth needs the optional VE.Bus Smart dongle. Full settings use VEConfigure with an MK3-USB interface, or remote access through a GX device.

Does a Quattro replace a MultiPlus-II?

It adds a second AC input. If you only have one AC source, the MultiPlus-II is enough.

Can a MultiPlus-II charge from solar directly?

No. It charges from AC. Solar connects through a SmartSolar MPPT on the DC side, and a Cerbo GX coordinates the two.

Can I use a MultiPlus-II without a battery monitor?

It works, but a SmartShunt or BMV gives you accurate state of charge, which the inverter can’t measure on its own.
