Victron VRM Setup: Monitor Your System From Anywhere

A Victron VRM setup lets you check your battery, solar and inverter from anywhere, set alarms and even change settings remotely. VRM (Victron Remote Management) is Victron’s free portal and app. It needs two things: a GX device such as a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX, and an internet connection. This guide follows the steps in Victron’s GX manual.

SolarPowerMyRV shows how to connect a Victron system to Wi-Fi for remote monitoring.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

Step 1: Get the GX Device Online

MethodNotes from Victron’s manual
EthernetMost reliable. Don’t confuse the Ethernet port with the VE.Bus or VE.Can ports
Built-in Wi-Fi2.4GHz only. Keep the signal at 50% or more
USB Wi-Fi dongleFor better range from inside a cabinet. Use Victron-listed models
GX LTE 4G or mobile routerGX devices have no SIM slot
USB tetheringShare a phone’s connection

Step 2: Victron VRM Setup and Registration

  1. Create a free account on the VRM portal.
  2. Confirm the GX device has sent data. Victron says a system can’t be registered until it has successfully transmitted to VRM.
  3. Add the installation. On a GX Touch or Ekrano, scan the QR code in Settings → VRM. From Remote Console, use the link button in the same menu, so you don’t need to read the portal ID off the sticker.
  4. Install the VRM app on iOS or Android, and add home-screen widgets if you want.

Step 3: Set Up Alarms and Remote Control

Once registered, VRM gives you live and historical data, Remote Console, remote firmware updates, and remote control of inverter-chargers, GX relays and generators. Data logging requires the Remote Console access setting to be Full (the default) or Read-only.

Step 4: Plan for Bad Signal

  • The GX buffers logs internally for several days and uploads them when the connection returns. Victron says links with up to 70% packet loss still work.
  • Insert a microSD card or USB stick to keep more. Victron estimates about 25MB per month at a one-minute log interval.
  • No internet at all? Eject the card, then use Upload GX file in VRM from any computer.

Troubleshooting “No Contact”

  • Settings → VRM → Last contact shows dashes: the device hasn’t reached VRM since power-up.
  • Stored records above 0 means logs are waiting to upload.
  • IP address starts with 169: there’s no DHCP server on the network.
  • Error #150 usually means a captive Wi-Fi login page, like those at campgrounds and marinas. Victron says GX devices can’t work with those, so use a travel router or mobile data.
  • Wi-Fi state “Failure”: usually a wrong password. Forget the network and try again.

See the VRM portal.

Worked Example: Monitoring an RV From Home

An RV in storage with a Cerbo GX, a SmartShunt, a SmartSolar MPPT and a MultiPlus-II, connected to a small 4G router:

  1. Connection: the router connects to the Cerbo GX by Ethernet, giving a stable link that doesn’t depend on campground Wi-Fi.
  2. Data use: at the default one-minute log interval, roughly 25MB a month of logs (Victron’s estimate for storage), plus a little more for live views and the Remote Console, keeps a small data plan workable.
  3. Alarms: set a low battery alarm at, for example, 50% state of charge, so you get an email if the battery drops while the RV sits.
  4. Remote control: if the battery drops, you can see whether solar is charging and switch loads or the inverter off from the VRM app.

Worked Example: An Off-Grid Cabin on Starlink

A cabin with a Starlink connection and a Cerbo GX on the same network:

  • Dashboard: VRM shows daily solar yield, consumption and battery state of charge.
  • Trends: the history graphs show how solar harvest changes through the seasons, helping you decide whether to add panels or batteries.
  • Generator: with the Cerbo’s relay wired to the generator’s start input, generator auto start/stop runs on battery state of charge, and VRM shows run hours.

Useful VRM Features

FeatureWhat it does
DashboardLive system overview with power flows
AdvancedDetailed graphs of any logged value over time
AlarmsEmail alerts for battery, solar or inverter conditions
Remote ConsoleThe GX menus, remotely
Remote VEConfigureChange inverter-charger settings remotely
Firmware updatesUpdate supported devices without a site visit

Setting Up Alarms

VRM’s alarm rules let you choose a device, a value such as battery voltage or state of charge, and high and low thresholds with a delay. Add the email addresses that should get alerts. Starting with a few key alarms, such as low state of charge, high battery temperature and inverter overload, keeps notifications useful rather than overwhelming.

Sharing Access

You can invite other VRM users to an installation, such as a family member or your installer, with full or read-only access. That’s handy when someone else checks on a cabin or boat while you’re away.

The VRM App and Widgets

The VRM app shows the dashboard on your phone, with home-screen widgets for quick checks of battery state of charge and solar power. It also gives you access to the Remote Console and alarm notifications.

Security Tips

Use a strong VRM password, enable two-factor authentication on your account, and change the GX device’s Remote Console password from the default. Set Remote Console access to Read-only if others can see the system but shouldn’t change settings.

FAQ

Is VRM free?

Yes. Victron describes the VRM website as free of charge.

Will it work over Starlink?

Yes, as long as the GX device gets an internet connection over Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

How often does the GX upload data?

The log interval is configurable in Settings → VRM on the GX device; one minute is a common setting.

Can I see data from before I registered the system?

Data that the GX device has already sent or stored can appear once the installation is added to your account.
