Victron batteries and BMS units are sold separately, and that’s the most important thing to understand before buying. Victron’s LiFePO4 batteries monitor and balance their own cells, but they don’t contain an internal disconnect. An external Victron BMS does that job, shutting off chargers and loads, or the whole system, when a cell goes too high, too low or too cold. This guide covers the two battery families and how to match a BMS to each.
Victron Batteries and BMS: The Two Battery Families

|---|---|---|
| Matching BMS | SmallBMS, VE.Bus BMS V2, Smart BMS, Lynx Smart BMS | Lynx Smart BMS NG or VE.Bus BMS NG |
| Max batteries per BMS | 20 | Up to 50 with the Lynx Smart BMS NG |
| BMS connection | M8 circular cables | Daisy-chained 3-pole BMS cables |

Which BMS Do You Need?
| BMS | System voltage | How it protects | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SmallBMS | 12, 24 or 48V | Load and charge disconnect terminals | Simple systems with everything wired to the battery |
| VE.Bus BMS V2 | 12, 24 or 48V | Disconnect terminals, plus direct control of a VE.Bus Multi or Quattro | MultiPlus-based systems |
| Smart BMS CL 12/100, Smart BMS 12/200 | 12V only | Alternator input with current limiting (12/200 also has a system output) | Vans running off the alternator |
| Lynx Smart BMS | 12, 24 or 48V | 500A or 1000A contactor, built-in battery monitor | Large systems on a Lynx busbar |

All of them have a pre-alarm output and a remote on/off terminal. The “Smart” models add Bluetooth and VictronConnect.
How to Choose
- Simple van with an MPPT and a DC-DC charger: a Smart BMS CL 12/100 or Smart BMS 12/200 handles the alternator for you.
- RV or boat with a MultiPlus: a VE.Bus BMS V2 can shut down the inverter-charger directly.
- Large bank on a Lynx busbar: the Lynx Smart BMS replaces a separate shunt and main switch.
- New Lithium NG build: the Lynx Smart BMS NG supports up to 50 batteries.
- Third-party lithium: most have their own internal BMS. Connect them to a GX device using Victron’s compatibility list instead.
For full specifications, see Victron’s pages for the Victron Lithium Battery 12.8V Smart and the Lynx Smart BMS NG.
Worked Example: A Van With One 200Ah Smart Battery
A van with a Lithium Battery Smart 12.8/200, a SmartSolar MPPT, an Orion XS and a small Phoenix inverter:
- The battery delivers up to 400A continuous, far more than the van needs, and recommends 100A or less of charge current.
- A SmallBMS switches the MPPT and Orion XS off through their remote inputs if a cell goes high or the battery is too cold to charge.
- It switches the inverter and a Smart BatteryProtect off if a cell goes too low.
- With 2,560Wh, a typical van using 800Wh a day has about three days of reserve without charging (estimate).
Worked Example: An RV With a MultiPlus
An RV with two Lithium Battery Smart 12.8/330 batteries in parallel and a MultiPlus-II 12/3000:
- A VE.Bus BMS V2 talks directly to the MultiPlus-II over VE.Bus, so the inverter/charger stops charging or inverting when the batteries need protecting.
- Two 330Ah batteries give about 8.4kWh, enough for a long weekend off-grid with modest loads (estimate).
- Combined recommended charge current is 300A or less, so the MultiPlus-II’s 120A charger and a solar controller sit well within it (estimate).
Worked Example: A Large Boat Bank on a Lynx
A boat with eight Lithium NG batteries and a Lynx distribution system:
- The Lynx Smart BMS NG manages all eight batteries through daisy-chained BMS cables, well under its 50-battery limit.
- Its built-in contactor can disconnect the whole system, and its battery monitor replaces a separate shunt.
- Lynx Distributors feed the inverters, chargers and DC loads from the same busbar.
Charging in Cold Weather
Victron’s Lithium Smart batteries charge only above +5°C. In a van or boat that sees freezing nights, place the batteries inside the heated space if possible. The BMS stops charging automatically when the battery is too cold, then allows it again once it warms up.
Series and Parallel Planning
- For a 24V bank, use 25.6V batteries rather than two 12.8V batteries in series where possible.
- For a 48V bank, Victron recommends two 25.6V batteries in series over four 12.8V batteries.
- Parallel batteries of the same model and capacity, and keep cables equal in length.
- Stay within the limit of batteries per BMS for the battery family.
Matching at a Glance
| System | Battery | BMS |
|---|---|---|
| — | — | — |
| Simple van, DC loads only | Lithium Battery Smart | SmallBMS |
| Van charging mainly from the alternator | Lithium Battery Smart 12.8V | Smart BMS CL 12/100 or Smart BMS 12/200 |
| RV or boat with a MultiPlus or Quattro | Lithium Battery Smart | VE.Bus BMS V2 |
| Large bank on a Lynx busbar | Lithium Battery Smart | Lynx Smart BMS |
| New NG build | Lithium NG | Lynx Smart BMS NG or VE.Bus BMS NG |
Monitoring the Bank
The Lynx Smart BMS has a full battery monitor built in. With a SmallBMS or VE.Bus BMS V2, add a SmartShunt or BMV for accurate state of charge. On a GX device, the BMS status, alarms and battery data appear together in VRM.
FAQ
Can I use a Victron battery without a BMS?
No. Victron’s batteries rely on an external BMS for protection.
12V or 24V batteries for a 48V bank?
Victron recommends two 25.6V batteries in series over four 12.8V batteries, because they need less balancing time.
Does the Lynx Smart BMS replace a SmartShunt?
Yes. It has a full battery monitor built in.
How long do Victron lithium batteries last?
Victron’s datasheet lists 2,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge.
Can I mix Smart and NG batteries?
No. They use different BMS systems, so pick one family for the whole bank.
Do Victron batteries have Bluetooth?
Yes. The Smart batteries show cell voltages, temperature and status in VictronConnect.
