Victron MultiPlus Generator Settings: Charging From a Generator

Getting the Victron MultiPlus generator settings right is the difference between a quiet, steady charge and an inverter that keeps clicking back to battery. Victron’s MultiPlus-II manual covers exactly which settings to change for a generator: the AC input current limit, the UPS feature, the dynamic current limiter and WeakAC. Here’s what each one does and when to use it.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

Victron MultiPlus Generator Settings at a Glance

SettingWhat it doesWhen to change it
AC input current limitCaps what the Multi pulls from AC-in. PowerControl and PowerAssist work from this limitAlways. Set it to your generator’s real output, not its breaker
UPS feature (on by default)Near-instant switch to inverter if AC failsTurn off if the Multi won’t sync or keeps dropping to inverter
Dynamic current limiter (off by default)Ramps load onto the generator graduallyTurn on for inverter generators and slow-responding generators
WeakAC (off by default)Accepts badly distorted AC for chargingTurn on if the charger barely charges. Cuts max charge current by about 20%
Input voltage lower limitLowest AC voltage accepted (90V default on 120V models)Raise to 110V for large synchronous AVR generators that shut the system down at stop

Step 1: Set the AC Input Current Limit

This is the most important setting. The MultiPlus is a powerful charger. With PowerControl, it uses only the current your loads aren’t using for charging. With PowerAssist, it adds battery power when the loads exceed the limit. Set the limit a little below the generator’s continuous rating so it never overloads.

Example (estimate): a 2,200W generator at 120V supplies about 18A. A limit around 15–16A leaves headroom.

Step 2: Fix Unstable or Dirty Power

Victron’s troubleshooting table says that if the charger doesn’t work on a generator because the AC is too distorted, turn on WeakAC and the dynamic current limiter. If the unit won’t synchronise or keeps switching back to inverter, turn UPS off. Most equipment won’t notice the slightly longer switchover.

Step 3: Automate Start and Stop

The MultiPlus-II has a programmable relay that can act as a generator start relay. With a Cerbo GX, generator auto-start can be triggered by state of charge, load or battery voltage. AC-out-2 is only live when AC input is present, and it reconnects about 2 minutes after AC returns so the generator can stabilise.

Generator Sizing Examples

GeneratorApprox. continuous output at 120V (estimate)Suggested AC input limit (example)
2,000W inverter generatorAbout 14A12–13A
3,500W portable generatorAbout 25A22–24A
5,000W portable generator (30A outlet)About 30A from one outlet25–28A

Estimates; use your generator’s continuous rating, not its peak rating. On a 3kVA MultiPlus-II, the setting range is 9.5–50A, per the manual.

How PowerControl and PowerAssist Help

Say the limit is 15A and the generator supplies about 1,800W. When AC loads are low, the MultiPlus uses most of that for charging. When a microwave starts, PowerControl reduces charging so the generator stays within its limit. If loads go above the limit, PowerAssist adds battery power. The generator carries a steady load and doesn’t overload.

Example: A 2,000W Inverter Generator With a MultiPlus-II 12/3000

  1. Set the AC input current limit to about 12–13A.
  2. Turn on the dynamic current limiter, since inverter generators respond slowly to sudden loads.
  3. Leave UPS on unless the unit has trouble synchronising.
  4. If charging is slow on a noisy generator, try WeakAC.
  5. Watch the first charge cycle in VictronConnect to confirm a steady input.

Example: A Large Generator at an Off-Grid Cabin

A 6–8kW generator with a MultiPlus-II 48/5000. The higher input limit lets the charger run at its full 70A, and a Cerbo GX starts the generator at a set state of charge and stops it at a higher one. Stopping around 80–90% and letting solar finish the charge keeps run time down (example values).

Using the Remote Panel for Quick Changes

If you switch between shore power and a generator often, the Digital Multi Control panel lets you change the AC input limit with a knob. With an external transfer switch, its rear terminals can set a preset generator limit automatically.

Charging Current vs Generator Size

The charger’s maximum current is listed per model on the MultiPlus-II datasheet. A smaller generator simply means the MultiPlus charges more slowly, since PowerControl stays within your limit.

Settings Checklist Before the First Run

  • AC input current limit set below the generator’s continuous rating.
  • Dynamic current limiter on for inverter generators.
  • Input voltage lower limit checked for your generator type.
  • Charger current and battery type set to your battery maker’s figures.
  • Generator grounded and connected as the manual and local code require.

FAQ

Why does my Multi keep clicking between generator and inverter?

The generator’s voltage or frequency is drifting out of range. Turn off UPS, and consider the dynamic current limiter.

Can I use an inverter generator?

Yes. That’s exactly what the dynamic current limiter is for.

Does this apply to the classic MultiPlus?

The classic datasheet lists the same PowerControl and PowerAssist features. Check your model’s manual for setting names.

What does the dynamic current limiter actually do?

It ramps the load onto the generator gradually instead of all at once, giving the generator time to respond. Victron recommends it for inverter generators.

Should I use the MultiPlus’s relay or a Cerbo for auto-start?

The built-in relay handles simple start/stop. A Cerbo GX adds conditions such as state of charge, load and quiet hours, plus remote monitoring.

Does a bigger generator charge faster?

Up to the charger’s maximum current, yes. Beyond that, extra generator capacity only helps run AC loads at the same time.
