A Victron Ford Pro Power Onboard setup uses the truck’s built-in generator outlets to feed a Victron charger or inverter/charger, instead of (or alongside) a DC-DC charger off the alternator. It works for truck campers and parked camps, with one Ford warning to know first. All Ford figures below come from Ford’s own Pro Power Onboard pages.
Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.
What Ford Pro Power Onboard Provides
| System | Outlets (per Ford) | Where offered |
|---|---|---|
| 400W | 400W outlet | Many Ford models incl. F-150, Ranger, Transit, Bronco |
| 2.0kW | Up to four 120V/20A | F-150 (2021+), Super Duty (2023+) |
| 2.4kW | 120V/20A outlets | F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, Lightning, E-Transit |
| 7.2kW | 120V/20A outlets plus a 240V/30A outlet | F-150 PowerBoost hybrid |

Ford says the maximum is the combined total of everything plugged in, and may drop in Drive or some temperatures.
Victron Ford Pro Power Onboard: Charger Options
- Blue Smart IP65 or IP22 charger. The simplest route: plug a 120V Victron charger into a bed outlet. A 12V 15A charger draws a small, predictable AC load.
- MultiPlus-II 120V. Plug its AC input into Pro Power and it charges the battery and passes power through to your AC loads. Set the AC input current limit low enough for one 20A outlet, and PowerAssist can top up short peaks from the battery.
- Orion XS or Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger. Still the usual way to charge while driving, from the alternator side.
The Towing Warning
Ford’s own page states: “Do not use the onboard generator to power a towable item when your vehicle is in motion unless you are using Ford-approved accessories.” That means a travel trailer plugged into the bed outlet while you drive is off the table unless Ford approves the accessory. For trailers on the move, use a DC-DC charger through the trailer wiring, sized for that wiring.
When It Makes Sense
- Parked camps and job sites: run the truck, charge the bank, then shut it off. Ford says the truck should be in an open, well-ventilated area.
- Truck campers where the charger is in the vehicle you’re driving, used within Ford’s guidance.
Setup Tips
- Switch Pro Power on from the center display (Generator Mode) and press the outlet’s power button, as Ford describes.
- Keep the Victron AC input limit under the outlet’s rating.
- Have an electrician check any hard-wired AC input, transfer switch or grounding arrangement.
Full specifications for the MultiPlus-II are on Victron’s product page.

Example: Truck Camper on a 2.0kW System
An F-150 with the 2.0kW Pro Power Onboard system and a truck camper with a 200Ah 12V lithium battery. A Blue Smart IP22 12/30 plugged into a bed outlet charges the battery at up to 30A, which draws roughly 450–500W from the outlet (estimate). That leaves plenty of the 2.0kW for a coffee maker or power tools at the same time.
| Charge from | Approx. time to add 100Ah (estimate) |
|---|---|
| Blue Smart IP65 12/15 | About 7 hours |
| Blue Smart IP22 12/30 | About 3.5 hours |
| MultiPlus-II 12/3000 limited to about 12A AC input | About 1–1.5 hours |
Estimates, ignoring the slower final stage of charging.
Example: Job Site With a MultiPlus-II
A contractor’s truck with a 7.2kW PowerBoost system and a MultiPlus-II 12/3000 in a service body. With the MultiPlus AC input plugged into a 120V/20A outlet and the input limit set to about 16A (example value), the MultiPlus charges the battery and passes power to tools. When a saw starts, PowerAssist adds battery power for the peak, and when the truck is off, the MultiPlus runs the tools from the battery.
Matching the Victron Setting to the Outlet
| Ford outlet | Suggested Victron AC input limit (example) |
|---|---|
| 120V/20A | 16A |
| 240V/30A (7.2kW system) | Check the MultiPlus-II 2×120 manual for split-phase input |
| 400W outlet | Use only a small charger, such as a Blue Smart IP65 12/15 |
Example values; keep the limit below the outlet’s rating and Ford’s combined maximum.
Using Both: Pro Power and a DC-DC Charger
Many truck camper owners use both. An Orion XS 12/12-50A charges the camper battery from the alternator while driving, and Pro Power Onboard with a Victron AC charger tops it up quickly at camp. A SmartShunt shows how much each source adds.
Fuel Use and Run Time
Running the engine to charge uses fuel, so a bigger charger that finishes faster can be more efficient than a small one running for hours. Solar on the camper roof covers the rest on sunny days, so the truck only needs to run occasionally.
Wiring Tips for a Hard-Wired AC Input
If you’d rather not run an extension cord, an electrician can install a dedicated inlet on the camper or service body that you plug into the bed outlet. Keep the cord rated for the outlet’s current, and avoid daisy-chained power strips.
Quick Setup Checklist
- Turn on Pro Power Onboard from the center display.
- Set the Victron charger’s or MultiPlus’s AC input limit below the outlet rating.
- Plug in with a properly rated cord.
- Check charging in VictronConnect.
- Park in an open, well-ventilated area, as Ford advises.
FAQ
Can Pro Power Onboard replace a DC-DC charger?
For parked charging, often yes. For charging a towed trailer while driving, Ford warns against it unless you use Ford-approved accessories.
Does Pro Power work while driving?
Ford says it does, with possibly reduced maximum power in Drive.
Which Victron charger is best for the 400W outlet?
A small charger such as the Blue Smart IP65 12/15, which draws well under 400W.
Can the MultiPlus-II run on Pro Power and battery together?
Yes. PowerAssist adds battery power when loads exceed the AC input limit you set.
