Victron VRM Portal Review: Features, What It Needs and Who It’s For

The Victron VRM portal (Victron Remote Management) is Victron’s free remote monitoring website and app. It shows what your batteries, solar, inverter/charger and tanks are doing from anywhere with internet. It also lets you change settings and get alerts. The one requirement people miss is a GX device. Here’s what VRM does, based on Victron’s VRM page and GX manuals.

A Victron VRM video.

What the Victron VRM Portal Shows

  • Energy flows: consumption, solar yield and grid or generator use.
  • Battery state of charge, voltage and current over time.
  • Tank levels and temperatures from GX-connected sensors.
  • Historical data for deep-dive analysis and an organized dashboard.
  • Geofences for vehicles, boats or whole fleets, with an alarm when they leave a set area.

What You Can Control

Victron’s VRM page lists:

  • Start the generator.
  • Set the shore current limit and switch to charger only.
  • Manage ESS backup capacity.
  • Update firmware remotely.
  • Remote Console for the GX device’s full menu, as Victron’s GX manuals describe.
  • VRM widgets on your phone’s home screen to check data or control a generator, ESS or EV charger.

Alerts and Automation

Configurable push notifications and email alarms, for example a low-battery warning. Sensor data like solar irradiance, wind, temperature, tank and humidity can trigger automated actions that control generators, pumps, heaters or relay-switched devices.

What You Need

  1. A GX device: Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX, a MultiPlus-II GX or EasySolar-II GX, or a GlobalLink 520 for simpler systems. Victron’s VRM page states VRM “requires a GX-device.”
  2. Internet: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a GX LTE 4G modem or a mobile router.
  3. A free VRM account with the installation added.

Victron’s datasheets describe VRM as free.

Who It’s For

  • RV and van owners who want to check their battery while away.
  • Off-grid cabins where a generator can be started remotely.
  • Installers managing many systems. VRM’s professional tools sort installations by alarm state and group users.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • No GX device, no VRM. Bluetooth-only products show in VictronConnect but not in VRM unless a GX device or GlobalLink is logging them.
  • Needs internet to update in real time.
  • Data usage matters on metered cellular plans.

For the complete spec sheet and current manual, see the Victron VRM portal page.

Worked Example: Checking an RV in Storage

An RV parked at a storage lot has a Cerbo GX, a SmartShunt, two SmartSolar controllers and a small 4G router. From home, the owner opens the VRM app and sees:

  • Battery: 92% state of charge at 13.3V, with a small discharge from the fridge left on.
  • Solar: yesterday’s yield of about 1.4kWh across both controllers.
  • Alarms: none in the last week.

If the state of charge fell below a set level, VRM would send an email or push alert. Example readings.

Worked Example: Mobile Data Use

VRM logs data at an interval you can set on the GX device. A small system logging every 15 minutes uses only a small amount of data, while frequent logging plus heavy Remote Console use uses far more. If you’re on a metered plan, set a longer logging interval and use Remote Console sparingly. Check the GX manual for the logging interval options.

Setting Up VRM in Six Steps

  1. Connect your Victron gear to a GX device (or a GlobalLink 520).
  2. Give the GX device internet through Ethernet, Wi-Fi or a GX LTE 4G modem.
  3. In the GX menu, check that VRM online portal logging is enabled.
  4. Create a free account at vrm.victronenergy.com.
  5. Add the installation using the VRM Portal ID shown on the GX device.
  6. Name the system, set its location, and add alarm rules for battery voltage or state of charge.

The VRM App and Widgets

The VRM app for iOS and Android shows the same dashboard as the website. Home screen widgets display state of charge, solar power or generator status at a glance, and some widgets let you control a generator or switch the inverter mode without opening the app. They update whenever the GX device sends new data.

Sharing Access

You can invite other people to an installation with different levels of access. A family member can get read-only access, while an installer can be given full control to change settings or run Remote Console. That makes it easy to get help without handing over your login.

Most owners use both: VictronConnect for setting up each device, and VRM for checking the whole system from afar.

FAQ

Is the Victron VRM portal free?

Yes. Victron’s datasheets describe VRM as a free remote monitoring website.

Can I use VRM without a Cerbo GX?

You need some GX device or a GlobalLink 520. The Cerbo GX is the most common.

Does VRM work with a MultiPlus-II GX?

Yes. The MultiPlus-II GX has a built-in GX device, so it can connect to VRM directly once it has internet.

Can VRM show weather or solar forecasts?

VRM includes a solar forecast feature for systems with location set, which estimates the next day’s production.

Is my data stored if the internet drops?

The GX device buffers data and uploads it once the connection returns, within its storage limits.
