The Victron Inverter RS Smart Solar 48/6000 combines a 6kVA inverter and a 6kW solar charge controller in one 11kg box. It’s built for off-grid solar systems that need AC power but no grid or generator charging input. Unlike the Multi RS, it’s an inverter, not an inverter/charger. Here’s what Victron’s datasheet says.

Features
- Bi-directional DC-DC converter between the battery and the inverter. It charges from surplus solar and draws from the battery when needed.
- Built-in PV isolator switch on the bottom of the unit.
- Earth-leakage trip at 30mA and PV isolation checking before start-up.
- AC-coupled solar charging up to 5,000W from a PV inverter on the AC output.
- Parallel and three-phase: up to 12 units in parallel, or 4 per phase.
- Bluetooth, display, VE.Can and VE.Direct. Only VE.Can connects to a GX device. VE.Direct is for a GlobalLink 520.
- Programmable relay with genset start/stop, and a remote input that accepts a smallBMS.
The Voltage Rule
Victron says PV Voc shouldn’t exceed 8 × battery float voltage. With a 50V battery voltage, that’s 400V, below the 450V headline. Check this at your coldest temperature.
Who It’s For
- 230V off-grid cabins and homes with 4kW to 6kW of panels and no AC charging source.
- Simple, compact systems where one box replaces a separate inverter and MPPT.
The 230V Warning
The output is 230V. US buyers would need a different product for 120V loads.
Good to Know Before You Buy
- No AC charger input. If you have a generator, the Multi RS Solar adds one.
- IP21, so it’s for indoor use.
- 48V only.

Worked Example: A 230V Off-Grid Cabin
A cabin in a 230V country with 5.6kW of panels, a 48V 15kWh lithium bank and loads averaging 8kWh a day:
- Panels: two strings of 2.8kW, one per tracker, each under the 3,000W per-tracker limit.
- String voltage: with illustrative 400W panels at about 37V Voc, seven per string gives roughly 259V, or about 285V on a cold morning (estimate), well below the 8 × float rule (about 400V on a 50V battery).
- Daily solar: 5.6kW × 4 peak sun hours × 0.75 ≈ 16.8kWh in good weather, comfortably above the 8kWh load (estimate).
- Battery: at 80% depth of discharge, 15kWh gives about 12kWh usable, roughly 1.5 days of autonomy without sun (estimate).
Worked Example: Continuous Power and Temperature
The datasheet gives 4,800–5,300W continuous at 25°C depending on battery voltage, 4,500W at 40°C and 3,000W at 65°C. In a well-ventilated plant room, expect close to the 25°C figure. If the unit sits in a hot shed in summer, plan your heavy loads (washing machine, water heater) around about 4,500W. Peaks such as a pump start can use the 9kW for 3 seconds.
Worked Example: AC-Coupling an Existing PV Inverter
If the cabin already has a 3kW grid-style PV inverter, it can be connected to the Inverter RS output for AC-coupled solar, up to 5,000W per the datasheet. The Inverter RS forms the AC grid, the PV inverter feeds into it, and surplus goes into the battery through the bi-directional converter. Frequency shifting is used to throttle the PV inverter when the battery is full; check the manual for compatible PV inverters and settings.
Installation Steps
- Mount the 11kg unit vertically on a wall in a dry indoor space (IP21) with clearance for airflow.
- Connect the 48V battery with a fuse sized for the inverter’s maximum DC current.
- Wire the AC output to a distribution board with an RCD and breakers.
- Connect each PV string to its tracker, with the built-in PV isolator switched off.
- Connect VE.Can to a GX device for VRM, DVCC and, with a compatible lithium battery, BMS control.
- Set the battery profile, AC frequency and relay functions in VictronConnect, then switch on the PV isolator.
Using the Relay for a Generator Signal
The programmable relay supports genset start/stop. Because the Inverter RS has no AC input, a generator would need its own battery charger, or you’d step up to the Multi RS Solar, which adds an AC input and charger in a similar box.
Scaling Up
Up to 12 units can run in parallel, or 4 per phase in a three-phase system. A larger off-grid home can start with one unit and add more as loads and solar grow, as long as the battery bank and cabling are sized for the final system.
FAQ
Can the Victron Inverter RS Smart Solar charge from a generator?
Not directly. It has no AC input. AC-coupled charging works only from a PV inverter on its output.
How much solar can it take?
6,000W total, 3,000W per tracker.
Does it need a separate MPPT?
No. The two built-in trackers handle up to 6,000W of PV.
Can it be monitored remotely?
Yes. Connect it to a GX device over VE.Can for VRM, or use a GlobalLink 520 on its VE.Direct port.
What does the earth-leakage protection do?
It trips at 30mA of leakage current on the AC output, adding protection for people using the cabin’s sockets.
Can I run it at 60Hz?
The datasheet lists 50Hz output, adjustable to 60Hz.
