Victron Filax 2 vs VE Transfer Switch: Choosing an AC Transfer Switch

The Victron Filax 2 and the VE Transfer Switch both switch your loads automatically between two AC sources, such as shore power and an inverter or a generator and an inverter. They’re built for different jobs, though. The Filax 2 is ultra-fast and made for sensitive electronics. The VE Transfer Switch handles more current and larger loads. Here’s how they compare, using Victron’s specs.

The Filax 2 weighs 0.8 kg. The VE Transfer Switch page lists weights of 1.85 kg and 1.65 kg for its two models.

Filax 2: Fast Switching for Electronics

Victron designed the Filax to switch sensitive loads, like computers and entertainment equipment, from one AC source to another. The priority source is usually mains, shore power or a generator. The alternate source is usually an inverter. With a switching time under 20 ms, Victron says sensitive loads keep running without disruption.

Victron’s spec table shows how the 230V version decides to switch. It moves to the inverter if the priority source drops below 180V or goes outside its frequency window. It switches back above 188V after a 30-second delay. The 120V version uses 88V and 92V thresholds.

Victron is clear that the Filax is not meant for high-power household equipment such as washing machines or electric motors.

VE Transfer Switch: More Power

Victron says the VE Transfer Switch has two inputs and one output and transfers whichever source is available. Typical pairings are generator and shore, inverter and generator, or inverter and shore. Input 1 has a contact delay of about 10 seconds, which is adjustable. Both models are single phase, 200-250 VAC. The 10kVA version can handle an 8 kW motor load, such as an air conditioner.

Do You Need One With a MultiPlus?

Usually not. A MultiPlus or Quattro already has a built-in transfer switch. The Quattro also takes two AC inputs. These standalone switches are for systems with a plain inverter, such as a Phoenix, or for switching between two generators or shore and a generator.

Who It’s For

  • Filax 2: boats and RVs with a Phoenix inverter and a computer, TV or satellite gear that can’t drop out.
  • VE Transfer Switch: 230V systems switching larger loads between shore, a generator and an inverter.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Filax 2: 16A and no motor loads.
  • VE Transfer Switch: 200-250V only, so it doesn’t suit 120V North American systems.

Victron lists every Filax 2 variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.

Example: Sailboat With a Phoenix Inverter and a Filax 2

A sailboat with shore power and a Phoenix inverter for the nav station computer and TV. The Filax 2 takes shore power as its priority source and the Phoenix as the alternate. Plugged in at the marina, the loads run from shore. When the boat leaves or shore power drops out, the Filax switches to the inverter within 16 ms, so the computer keeps running. When shore power returns and stays stable for 30 seconds, it switches back.

Example: Shore, Generator and Inverter on a 230V Yacht

A larger 230V boat with shore power, a generator and an inverter. A VE Transfer Switch 10kVA picks between shore and generator for the main loads, including an air conditioner, and a second switch can bring in the inverter for essential circuits. With its 8kW motor rating, the 10kVA model handles the air conditioner’s start-up.

How the Filax Decides Which Source to Use

The Filax 2 checks the priority source’s voltage and frequency continuously. It switches to the alternate source when the priority source drops out of range, and back when it has been stable for the set delay. That delay gives a generator time to settle before loads are connected.

Installation Tips

  • Location: the Filax 2’s IP65 rating suits damp spaces; the VE Transfer Switch is IP54.
  • Protection: fit a breaker on each input and on the output, sized for the switch and the cable.
  • Grounding: follow Victron’s manual and local marine or electrical code for earth and neutral connections.
  • Labels: mark which input is the priority source, so future owners and electricians know how it works.

Pairing With a Phoenix Inverter

The Filax 2 is a natural partner for Victron’s Phoenix inverters. A Phoenix Inverter VE.Direct or Phoenix Inverter Smart supplies the alternate source, and the Filax makes switching to it automatic. For larger systems where you also need a battery charger, a MultiPlus combines both jobs.

Sizing the Load

Add up the loads on the switch’s output. Computers, TVs, routers and chargers usually total well under the Filax 2’s 16A. For anything with a motor or a heating element, such as a microwave, water heater or air conditioner, use a VE Transfer Switch or a MultiPlus.

FAQ

How fast does the Victron Filax 2 switch?

Victron lists a maximum transfer time of 16 ms.

Can the Filax 2 run an air conditioner?

No. Victron says it’s not intended for electric motors or high-power appliances.

Is there a 120V Filax?

Yes. Victron’s spec table includes 120V thresholds.

Does the Filax 2 need a separate power supply?

It’s powered by the AC sources it switches; check Victron’s manual for installation details.

Can the VE Transfer Switch prioritize one input?

Yes. Input 1 has an adjustable contact delay of about 10 seconds by default, which lets a generator stabilise before the load connects.
