VictronConnect App Review: Features, What It Connects To and Who It’s For

The VictronConnect app is the free tool you use to set up, monitor and update almost every Victron product. It’s how you program a SmartSolar charge controller, check a SmartShunt’s state of charge, or change a Blue Smart charger’s profile. If you own any Victron gear, you’ll use it. Here’s what Victron says it does and where its limits are.

How It Connects

  • Bluetooth: Smart products, like SmartSolar MPPTs, SmartShunt and Blue Smart chargers, connect directly.
  • Dongles: products with only a VE.Direct or VE.Bus port can be upgraded with Bluetooth dongles. The VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle covers BMVs, MPPTs and Phoenix inverters. The VE.Bus Smart dongle covers inverter/chargers.
  • USB: a VE.Direct to USB cable or an MK3-USB interface, for wired setup on a computer.
  • Remote (VictronConnect-Remote): with a GX device or other remote communication device, you can see connected products from anywhere.

Instant Readout

Victron’s page says Instant Readout shows crucial data in the device list immediately, without waiting for data to load. You can scan every Smart product in a van or boat in one glance.

Installer Features

  • Settings files to copy a configuration from one system to another.
  • 30-day trends for troubleshooting.
  • Remote check-in to change settings.

The demo library is a good way to learn a product’s menus before you buy.

Who It’s For

  • Every Victron owner, since setup and firmware updates go through it.
  • Installers commissioning several similar systems.

Limits

  • Long-term history beyond 30 days needs the VRM portal and a GX device or GlobalLink.
  • Non-Smart products need a dongle or cable.
  • Wired MK3 caution. The VictronConnect manual notes that when an inverter/charger is connected through an MK3, communication with a GX device is blocked.

Worked Example: First-Time Setup of a SmartSolar

Here’s what a typical first session looks like, using a SmartSolar MPPT as the example:

  1. Open VictronConnect. The controller appears in the device list with Instant Readout showing panel watts and battery voltage.
  2. Tap it and enter the default PIN (000000), then set a new PIN when prompted.
  3. Accept the firmware update if the app offers one. Don’t close the app while it runs.
  4. Go to Settings > Battery and choose a preset, or enter the voltages from your battery’s datasheet.
  5. Check the History tab the next day to see the yield, maximum power and how long each charge stage lasted.

What Each Product Shows

ProductMain screens in the app
SmartSolar MPPTSolar watts, battery voltage, charge stage, 30-day yield history
SmartShunt / BMV-712State of charge, time-to-go, current, history and alarms
Blue Smart chargerCharge mode, charge current, stage and low current mode
Orion XS / Orion-Tr SmartInput and output voltage, charge stage, engine-running detection
MultiPlus via VE.Bus Smart dongleInverter and charger state, AC input current limit, battery data

Worked Example: Cloning a Fleet Setup

An installer fitting identical systems in five camper vans can configure the first van’s SmartSolar, save the settings file, then load it onto the other four controllers. That’s five identical battery profiles in a few minutes instead of re-entering every voltage. Example workflow, based on the settings-file feature.

VE.Smart Networking, Set Up in the App

VictronConnect is also where you create a VE.Smart network. You pick one device to share data (a SmartShunt or Smart Battery Sense) and add the chargers. They then use the real battery voltage, temperature and current, rather than measuring at their own terminals. Setup steps:

  1. Open the SmartShunt or Battery Sense, go to Settings > VE.Smart networking.
  2. Create a network and give it a name.
  3. Open each SmartSolar or Orion and join the same network.
  4. Look for the network icon on each device to confirm it’s sharing data.

Firmware Updates, Step by Step

Updates add features and support for new products, and the app handles them for you.

  1. Connect to the device and wait for the app to show an update prompt.
  2. Keep the phone close to the device and plugged in or well charged.
  3. Tap update and leave the app open until it confirms the new version.
  4. Recheck your settings afterwards; they normally carry over unchanged, but a quick look confirms it.

Tips for Getting the Most From It

  • Rename devices (“Roof solar”, “House battery”) so a list of several products is easy to read.
  • Keep the app updated: support for new products and features arrives with app updates.
  • Use the demo library to explore a product’s settings before buying it or before going on site.
  • Check Bluetooth range: metal enclosures can weaken it, so test before closing up a battery box.
