Is a solar battery worth it in 2026? It depends on three things: how your utility credits exported solar, whether your rates change by time of day, and how much backup power is worth to you. Battery systems homeowners own and install after Dec 31, 2025 no longer get the 30% federal credit (IRS). The value has to come from bill savings and resilience.
When a Solar Battery Is Worth It
| Situation | Battery value |
|---|---|
| Net billing with low export credits (e.g., California NBT) | High. Stores cheap midday solar for expensive evening hours |
| Time-of-use rates with a big peak/ | Medium to high |
| Frequent or long outages, medical equipment, a home office | High (resilience) |
| Full retail net metering, flat rates, rare outages | Low. The grid already acts like a free battery |
Example Savings Math (Illustrative)
Assumptions: 10kWh shifted per day, export credit $0.08, evening rate $0.40, 90% round-trip efficiency (assumed, check the datasheet).
- Value per day = 10 × 0.9 × $0.40 − 10 × $0.08 = $3.60 − $0.80 = $2.80
- Per year ≈ $1,020
If the installed battery costs $12,000 (hypothetical figure, get real quotes), simple payback is about 12 years, which is close to many battery warranty terms. That’s why backup value often tips the decision.
Backup Power: What It Actually Covers
- Critical-loads backup: a subpanel with the fridge, lights, internet, outlets and furnace fan. One battery often covers these.
- Whole-home backup: needs more capacity and power, or smart load management to shed big loads.
- Solar recharge: in a multi-day outage, solar refills the battery during the day, which plain grid-tie solar can’t do.
Example: a 13.5kWh battery running a 500W critical-loads average lasts about 27 hours without solar (13.5 ÷ 0.5), before inverter losses.
Costs to Include
Battery, inverter (if separate), gateway or transfer equipment, electrical work, permits, and possibly a main panel upgrade. Energy storage installs fall under NEC Article 706 and local fire codes, so placement rules can add cost.
Alternatives
- Portable power stations for a few essentials, with no electrician needed for plug-in use.
- Standby generator if outages are long and rare and you have gas.
- Do nothing if your utility still offers full net metering and outages are rare.
Worked Example: Savings Under Three Rate Structures
The same battery saves very different amounts depending on your tariff. Using the assumptions above (10 kWh shifted a day, 90% round-trip efficiency) (illustrative rates):
| Rate structure | What a stored kWh replaces | Value per day | Value per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full retail net metering, flat $0.20 | Exports already credited at $0.20 | 10 × 0.9 × $0.20 − 10 × $0.20 = −$0.20 | About −$73 (a small loss) |
| Time-of-use: $0.15 off-peak, $0.40 peak, net metering | Peak power, charged from solar worth $0.15 | 9 × $0.40 − 10 × $0.15 = $2.10 | About $770 |
| Net billing: $0.08 export, $0.40 evening | Peak power, charged from low-value exports | $2.80 | About $1,020 |
Under flat-rate net metering, round-trip losses mean a battery used only for bill savings slightly loses money. Its value there is backup. That’s why the answer to “is a solar battery worth it” depends so much on where you live. Our net metering vs net billing guide and NEM 3.0 explained cover the rules.
Putting a Value on Backup
Backup value is personal, but you can estimate it:
- Count outages. Your utility may publish reliability statistics. EIA also reports average outage duration per customer by state each year.
- List what an outage costs you. Spoiled food, a hotel night, lost work time, a sump pump that stops, or medical devices that need power.
- Multiply by expected outages per year and add that to the yearly bill savings.
Example: two outages a year, each costing about $300 in food and lost work (illustrative), add $600 a year in value. Added to the $1,020 net billing savings above, that’s $1,620 a year, which would bring a $12,000 battery’s simple payback to about 7.4 years.
Sizing the Battery for Savings vs Backup
| Goal | How to size |
|---|---|
| Bill savings under net billing | Match usable kWh to your evening peak use (for example, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.) |
| Essentials backup | Average essential load × hours of backup wanted |
| Whole-home backup | Peak kW of loads that run at once, plus daily kWh. Often 2+ units |
Example: if your evening peak averages 9 kWh and essentials draw 500 W, one 13.5 kWh battery covers the evening peak with room to spare, and covers essentials for about 27 hours. For larger homes, see how many batteries to power a house.

Round-Trip Efficiency, Explained
Round-trip efficiency is the share of energy you get back out of a battery compared with what went in. At 90%, 10 kWh in gives 9 kWh out. The missing 1 kWh is lost as heat in the inverter and battery. That loss matters most when the price gap between charging and discharging is small.
| Charge value | Discharge value | Break-even round-trip efficiency |
|---|---|---|
| $0.08 | $0.40 | 20% |
| $0.15 | $0.40 | 38% |
| $0.20 | $0.20 | 100% (never pays) |
Break-even efficiency is charge value ÷ discharge value. Any real battery clears it easily under net billing, but never under flat retail net metering.
Placement and Code Basics
Energy storage systems are covered by NEC Article 706 and, for fire safety, NFPA 855 and local fire codes. These codes set rules for where batteries can go in garages, outside walls and living spaces, and for how much storage can be grouped together. Your installer and local inspector apply the version adopted in your area. Expect questions about location, clearances and vehicle impact protection in garages.
Step-by-Step: Deciding on a Battery
- Find your tariff name and export rate.
- Download hourly usage and add up evening-peak kWh.
- List backup needs and their watts.
- Get quotes for solar alone and solar plus battery from the same installer.
- Calculate yearly savings for each, add backup value, and compare paybacks.
- Check local storage incentives in DSIRE, since the federal credit ended for owned systems after 2025.
Utility Battery Programs
Some utilities pay battery owners to discharge during grid emergencies, often called virtual power plant or demand response programs. Payments and rules vary. Ask your utility and installer whether one is available and whether it limits how much backup reserve you keep.
FAQ
Is a solar battery worth it without net billing?
Usually only for backup, unless your time-of-use rates have a big peak price gap.
Can I get a battery without solar?
Yes. It can charge from the grid for backup or time-of-use savings, but it won’t recharge from the sun in an outage.
Do any incentives remain?
Some states and utilities run storage programs. Check DSIRE and your utility.
How long does a solar battery last?
Battery makers state warranties in years and sometimes in cycles or total energy delivered. Compare them in our home battery warranties compared post.
Is a solar battery worth it for power outages alone?
It can be if outages are frequent, long, or costly for you. For rare short outages, a generator or portable power station may cost less. See generator vs battery backup.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
Usually, with an AC-coupled battery such as Enphase IQ Battery 5P or FranklinWH aPower 2. Your utility may require an updated interconnection application.
