Enphase IQ Battery 5P Review: Modular Storage for Microinverter Homes

This Enphase IQ Battery 5P review is based on Enphase’s datasheet and warranty documents. The 5P is a 5 kWh, all-in-one AC battery with six built-in microinverters. Instead of one big box, you stack as many units as you need. We haven’t tested one ourselves, so there are no hands-on runtime claims here.

A look at Enphase’s IQ Battery lineup.

Can I add more IQ Battery 5P units later?

Yes. The system is modular, so units can be added later. Your installer confirms that the controller and electrical setup support the final size.

Does the IQ Battery 5P work during a power outage?

Yes, when installed with the IQ System Controller, which isolates the home from the grid so the battery and solar can keep running.

How much does one IQ Battery 5P weigh?

174 lb installed, with a 146 lb lifting weight, per Enphase’s datasheet.

What We Like

  • Modular sizing: buy 5, 10, 15 kWh or more
  • Power scales with units: each adds 3.84 kVA, so three give about 11.5 kVA
  • No single point of failure: six microinverters per unit
  • Quiet, fan-free passive cooling
  • Fits existing Enphase systems and the Enphase app

Things to Know

  • One unit is small for big motor loads. 48A LRA won’t start most central ACs on its own. Plan for several units or a soft starter.
  • Internet matters: Enphase’s warranty expects the system to stay connected for monitoring and updates.
  • Cost scales with units. Each 5P adds hardware and labor. Get quotes for the full configuration you want.
  • Installer-only.

How It Compares

Against a single big battery like Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh, up to 11.5 kW), three 5Ps give a similar 15 kWh and about 11.5 kVA, but in three boxes on the wall. That takes more space and more circuits, and in exchange you get redundancy and the option to start with one or two.

Who It’s For

Homes with Enphase IQ microinverters, buyers who want to start small and add capacity later, and anyone who values redundancy.

Price

Enphase sells through installers, and prices vary by region and configuration, so we don’t publish a figure we can’t verify. Remember there’s no 25D federal credit for homeowner-owned batteries installed after 2025.

See IQ Battery on Enphase’s website.

Configurations and What They Deliver

Because power and energy both scale with units, sizing is simple multiplication. Using the datasheet’s 5.0 kWh and 3.84 kVA per unit:

UnitsUsable energyContinuous powerPeak (3 s)Motor starting (LRA)
15 kWh3.84 kVA7.68 kVAup to 48 A
210 kWh7.68 kVA15.36 kVAscales with units
315 kWh11.52 kVA23.04 kVAscales with units
420 kWh15.36 kVA30.72 kVAscales with units

Peak and LRA scaling depend on system design. Confirm with your installer.

Worked Example: Runtime for Essentials

Using an essentials load of 600 W average (fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, furnace fan) (illustrative):

  • 1 unit: 5 kWh ÷ 0.6 kW = about 8.3 hours
  • 2 units: 10 kWh ÷ 0.6 kW = about 16.7 hours
  • 3 units: 15 kWh ÷ 0.6 kW = 25 hours

With Enphase solar recharging the batteries on sunny days, backup can continue as long as daily production covers use. For your own numbers, see how many batteries to power a house.

Worked Example: Round-Trip Efficiency

Enphase lists 96% DC round-trip efficiency. If midday solar sends 5.2 kWh into one unit, about 5.0 kWh comes back out at the battery’s DC side, before AC conversion losses. Under net billing, the value of storing a kWh is roughly the evening rate × efficiency − the export credit you gave up. At a $0.40 evening rate and $0.08 export credit (illustrative): 0.40 × 0.96 − 0.08 = about $0.30 per kWh shifted. One unit cycling 5 kWh a day is worth about $1.50 a day, or roughly $550 a year. See is a solar battery worth it.

How the System Fits Together

An Enphase battery system typically includes:

  • IQ Battery 5P units, each with six IQ8D-BAT microinverters
  • IQ System Controller, which disconnects the home from the grid in an outage and forms a microgrid
  • IQ Gateway, for monitoring and communications
  • Enphase IQ microinverters on the solar panels, if you have Enphase solar
  • Backup subpanel, optional for partial-home backup. See critical loads panel explained.

Because the battery is AC-coupled, it connects on the home’s AC side. That’s why it pairs naturally with microinverter systems. See microinverters vs string inverters vs optimizers.

Warranty in Numbers

Enphase’s US limited warranty covers 15 years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first. Capacity retention is 70% at 10 years and 60% at 15 years. On a 5 kWh unit:

PointGuaranteed capacity
New5.0 kWh
10 years3.5 kWh (70%)
15 years3.0 kWh (60%)

At one full cycle a day, 6,000 cycles is about 16.4 years, so for most daily-cycling homes the 15-year term arrives first. Compare with other brands in home battery warranties compared.

Where It Can Be Installed

The IQ Battery 5P is in an outdoor-rated NEMA 3R enclosure with passive cooling, so it can be mounted indoors or outside. Each unit weighs 174 lb installed, per the datasheet, so the wall or mounting surface must support it. Storage placement also has to follow NEC Article 706, NFPA 855 and local fire codes, which can restrict locations in living spaces and set spacing rules. Your installer and inspector decide the exact spot.

Operating Modes

Through the Enphase app, owners typically choose how the battery runs:

  • Self-consumption: stores extra solar and uses it at night.
  • Savings or time-of-use mode: discharges during expensive rate periods. This is useful under rate plans like the one described in NEM 3.0 explained.
  • Full backup: keeps the battery charged for outages.

A backup reserve setting holds back part of the capacity for outages in the first two modes.

Step-by-Step: Planning an IQ Battery 5P System

  1. Confirm your solar setup (Enphase micros, another brand, or no solar).
  2. List backup loads and their running and starting watts.
  3. Divide your target kWh by 5 to get a unit count.
  4. Check continuous power: units × 3.84 kVA must exceed loads running at the same time.
  5. Check motor starting for AC or well pumps.
  6. Plan wall space for each unit plus the System Controller.
  7. Get installer quotes for the full configuration.

FAQ

How many IQ Battery 5Ps do I need?

For essentials, often 2 (10 kWh). For partial-home backup with an AC, often 3–4. Your installer sizes it from your loads.

Can the 5P work with non-Enphase solar?

It’s AC-coupled, but full integration is designed around Enphase systems. Ask your installer about your setup.

What’s the warranty?

15 years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first, with capacity retention terms.
