Inverter Efficiency and Idle Draw: Where Your Battery Power Really Goes

Inverter efficiency decides how much of your battery actually reaches your appliances. Datasheets show a peak number, often 90–95%, but real losses also include idle draw, the power an inverter uses just being switched on. For small overnight loads, idle draw can waste more energy than the load itself.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

What Inverter Efficiency Means

Efficiency = AC watts out ÷ DC watts in. At 90%, a 900W load pulls about 1,000W from the battery, and the 100W difference becomes heat.

Efficiency isn’t constant. Most inverters are:

  • Least efficient at very light loads, because fixed losses dominate
  • Most efficient around 30–70% of rated output
  • Slightly less efficient at full load, with more heat

Idle Draw: The Hidden Drain

Idle (no-load) draw is the power used with nothing plugged in. Typical datasheet values run from about 5W for small units to 30–50W or more for large inverter-chargers.

Example math: a 25W idle draw over 24 hours is 600Wh a day, about half a 100Ah 12V lithium battery.

Overnight loadLoad energy (10 h)Idle at 25W (10 h)Share wasted
CPAP 30W300Wh250Wh~45%
Laptop 60W600Wh250Wh~29%
TV 100W1,000Wh250Wh~20%

Illustrative. Idle losses partly overlap with conversion losses when loaded. Check your inverter’s datasheet.

How to Cut Inverter Losses

  • Run DC loads directly. 12V fridges, fans, lights and USB chargers skip the inverter entirely.
  • Right-size the inverter. A 3,000W inverter idling all night to charge a phone is wasteful.
  • Use search or eco mode, which pulses the output until a load appears. It doesn’t suit everything (clocks, some chargers).
  • Switch it off when you don’t need AC.
  • Use a higher system voltage for big systems to cut resistive losses.

Reading the Datasheet

Look for peak efficiency, no-load power, and search/eco mode power. Some brands list a weighted (CEC) efficiency for grid-tie inverters, which better reflects real use.

Worked Example: Overnight Loads on a 12V Battery

Illustrative setup: a 2,000W inverter with 25W idle draw (check your datasheet) powering a 10W router and a 5W phone charger overnight for 10 hours.

ItemMathWh used
Loads15W × 10h150Wh
Inverter conversion losses (assume 85% at light load)150 ÷ 0.85 − 150about 26Wh
Idle draw25W × 10h250Wh
Total from batteryabout 426Wh

The inverter itself uses more energy than the loads. Two fixes:

  1. Run the router from a 12V DC-DC converter instead (about 10W × 10h ÷ assumed 90% ≈ 111Wh).
  2. Use a small inverter for overnight loads, or one with a low idle draw.

How that affects runtime is covered in how long will a 100Ah battery last.

Efficiency Varies With Load

Inverter datasheets often show an efficiency curve: efficiency is lowest at very light load, peaks somewhere in the middle, and dips a little at full load. Illustrative shape:

Load as % of ratingTypical efficiency shape
5%Lowest (idle losses dominate)
20–60%Near peak
100%Slightly below peak

Check the curve or the “CEC weighted efficiency” for grid-tied and hybrid inverters, which the California Energy Commission requires to be tested across several load points.

Where the Losses Go

  • Switching losses in the transistors that chop DC into AC.
  • Transformer losses in low-frequency inverters, which add idle draw but give strong surge capacity.
  • Cooling fans and control electronics, which run even with no load.

Comparing Two Inverters

SpecInverter A (illustrative)Inverter B (illustrative)
Continuous rating3,000W1,000W
Peak efficiency93%92%
Idle draw40W10W
Daily idle cost (24h)960Wh240Wh

If most of your use is small loads, B wastes about 720Wh a day less. Sizing advice is in what size inverter do I need.

Measuring It Yourself

A battery monitor (shunt) shows the DC current with the inverter on and nothing plugged in. Multiply by battery voltage to get your real idle watts. Steps are in how to use a multimeter.

FAQ

What is a good inverter efficiency?

Many quality pure sine inverters list 90–95% peak. The idle draw matters just as much for small loads.

Why is my battery draining with nothing plugged in?

Usually it’s inverter idle draw, plus any monitors, BMS and parasitic loads.

Does a bigger inverter use more power?

Usually, yes, in idle draw.

Is a pure sine inverter less efficient?

Not necessarily. Compare datasheet efficiency and idle draw rather than waveform.

What is search mode?

A power-save feature where the inverter pulses briefly to detect a load and stays mostly off until one appears.
