A lot of my off-grid and portable power projects run on 12V LiFePO4 batteries. They’re great batteries, but they need the right charger. A charger built for lead-acid batteries isn’t designed around lithium’s charging profile, so I wanted a dedicated charger that could take power straight from an AC outlet and refill a 12V lithium battery quickly. For this review, I tested the LiTime 12V 20A Lithium Battery Charger with a 12V LiFePO4 battery.
This charger provides a 14.6V output at up to 20 amps and is specifically designed for 12V (12.8V) LiFePO4 batteries. It also has a feature I think a lot of lithium battery owners will appreciate: 0V activation for batteries whose BMS has shut them down.
In this LiTime 12V 20A lithium battery charger review, I’ll cover what this charger is, its key features, how I used it, how the charging stages and protections work, its biggest limitation, the pros and cons, and who it’s for.

How I Used the LiTime 20A Charger
For this review, I used the LiTime 12V 20A charger with a 12V LiFePO4 battery.
The main benefit of having a dedicated LiFePO4 charger is being able to plug into an AC power source and charge a compatible lithium battery at up to 20 amps. The charger provides the 14.6V output that compatible 12V LiFePO4 batteries require.
Setup is straightforward: connect the charger to the battery, plug the charger into AC power, and let it manage the charge. The LED indicators make it easy to see the charging status at a glance, so I don’t have to guess where it is in the process.
Why 20 Amps Matters
Charging current determines how quickly you can refill a battery. In rough terms, a 20A charger can put back about 20 amp-hours of capacity per hour while it’s in its main constant-current stage. Actual charge time depends on the battery’s capacity, how empty it is, and the charging stages, since the current tapers off as the battery approaches full.
That makes a 20A charger a nice match for the 50Ah and 100Ah batteries that are common in RV and off-grid setups.
0V Activation: Waking Up a BMS-Protected Battery
Another useful feature is 0V activation. Lithium batteries commonly have a built-in Battery Management System, or BMS. If a battery is deeply discharged, the BMS can shut it down to protect the cells, and some chargers won’t recognize a battery in that state.
LiTime designed the LiTime 12V 20A Lithium Battery Charger to help activate a compatible protected battery so charging can begin again. If you’ve ever left a lithium battery sitting in storage too long, you’ll understand why this matters.
I put this to the test in a follow-up video, where I used the same charger on a brand-new LiTime 12V 50Ah battery that measured only 2.7V when it arrived.
CC, CV, and Float/Cut Off Charging Stages
Charging is automatically managed through three stages:
- CC (constant current): the charger pushes up to its full 20A to bulk-charge the battery
- CV (constant voltage): as the battery nears full, the charger holds the voltage steady and the current gradually tapers off
- Float/Cut Off: once the battery is charged, the charger transitions so it isn’t continuing to push a full charge into it
Because the charger controls the process, I don’t need to make constant manual adjustments or babysit the battery.
Built-In Protections
LiTime includes several protection features in the LiTime 12V 20A charger:
- Over-temperature protection
- Over-voltage protection
- Over-current protection
- Short-circuit protection
- Low-voltage protection
- Reverse-polarity protection
The aluminum housing and built-in cooling fan also help manage heat during operation, which is important when you’re pushing 20 amps for an extended period.
Important Limitation: It’s Not Waterproof
One important limitation is that this charger isn’t waterproof. LiTime specifically says it isn’t suitable for marine environments such as boats, ships, yachts, or trolling motors.
Even if you’re charging a battery that may eventually be used in one of those applications, the charger itself should be operated in an appropriate dry environment, like a garage, workshop, or indoors.
Tips for Charging a 12V LiFePO4 Battery
- Confirm your battery chemistry. This charger is for 12V (12.8V) LiFePO4 batteries, not lead-acid or other lithium chemistries.
- Connect in the right order. Follow the manual for connecting the battery and AC power.
- Use a dry, ventilated spot. Give the cooling fan room to breathe.
- Watch the LED indicators. They tell you where the charger is in the process.
- Check your battery’s charge rating. Make sure your battery can accept up to 20A of charge current.
