EcoFlow’s RIVER 3 and RIVER 3 Plus share the same compact LiFePO4 design and one-hour AC recharge, but the Plus doubles the inverter’s continuous rating to 600W, doubles the solar input to 220W and can grow to 858Wh with an add-on battery, according to EcoFlow’s product listings. The base RIVER 3 answers with a lighter 7.8-pound body and a lower price. Which one is the better buy comes down to what you plug in and whether you ever want more capacity.

The short answer
- Pick the RIVER 3 if your loads stay under 300W (phones, laptops, a Starlink Mini, LED lights, a CPAP without humidifier) and you want the lightest box.
- Pick the RIVER 3 Plus if you want 600W for small appliances, faster solar charging, a sub-10 ms UPS for a desktop or NAS, or the option to add a battery later.

Difference 1: How much you can run at once
This is the biggest gap. The RIVER 3’s 300W inverter handles electronics and small 12V-class loads. The Plus’s 600W covers a lot more of a kitchen counter or workbench. EcoFlow’s X-Boost raises those to 600W and 1,200W for resistive loads like kettles and heating pads, which run at reduced power rather than full output.
| Typical load | RIVER 3 (300W) | RIVER 3 Plus (600W) |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop (60–100W) | Yes | Yes |
| Starlink Mini (about 25–40W per Starlink) | Yes | Yes |
| Small TV + streaming box | Yes | Yes |
| Desktop PC + monitor (300–500W) | Light use only | Yes |
| Small dorm fridge | Check startup surge | More headroom |
| Kettle or hair dryer | Only reduced power via X-Boost | Only reduced power via X-Boost |
Difference 2: Solar charging speed
The RIVER 3’s solar port tops out at 110W and 30V, so one 100W portable panel is the natural match. The Plus takes up to 220W across a wider 11–55V window, so it accepts a single 200W panel or two 100W panels in series, as long as the combined open-circuit voltage stays under 55V. EcoFlow quotes a full solar recharge in about 2.6 hours for the RIVER 3 and about 1.5 hours for the Plus in ideal sun.
If you’re unsure how to wire panels, my series vs parallel guide and solar panel specs explainer walk through the voltage math.
Difference 3: Expandability
The Plus clips onto EcoFlow’s EB300 or EB600 extra battery using pogo-pin contacts, with no cable, and EcoFlow says the extra battery adds its own 140W USB-C port. With the largest pack, total capacity reaches 858Wh. The RIVER 3 is a closed unit; if you outgrow it, the next step is a bigger station such as the RIVER 3 Max Plus or the DELTA line.
Difference 4: UPS for a home office
Both can sit between the wall and your gear as a backup. EcoFlow lists under 20 ms for the RIVER 3 and under 10 ms for the Plus, and says the Plus’s three AC outlets all have UPS protection. The Plus also adds a USB-B port and EcoFlow’s Power Manager software, which can warn a PC or NAS and trigger a safe shutdown on low battery. For a router-and-modem backup, either works; for a desktop or NAS, the Plus is designed for the job.
Runtime estimates
These are my estimates, assuming about 85% of rated capacity reaches the load after conversion losses. Real numbers vary with temperature and load.
| Load | RIVER 3 (245Wh) | RIVER 3 Plus (286Wh) | Plus + EB600 (858Wh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi router, 10W | ≈ 21 hr | ≈ 24 hr | ≈ 73 hr |
| Starlink Mini, 30W | ≈ 7 hr | ≈ 8 hr | ≈ 24 hr |
| Laptop, 60W | ≈ 3.5 hr | ≈ 4 hr | ≈ 12 hr |
| CPAP, 40W (no humidifier) | ≈ 5 hr | ≈ 6 hr | ≈ 18 hr |
Math example: 286Wh × 0.85 ÷ 30W ≈ 8.1 hours. For reference, EcoFlow itself quotes up to 35 hours for a 3W router on the Plus. My Starlink Mini power guide has more on dish draw.
Portability
The RIVER 3 is the slimmer, upright box at 7.8 lb, which makes it easy to stash behind a car seat or in a backpack. The Plus is squarer and 2.6 lb heavier, which is still light for 600W. EcoFlow lists a built-in handle on the RIVER 3, and both use EcoFlow’s GaN-based X-GaNPower design, which EcoFlow says doubles runtime for loads under 100W compared with its previous generation.
Who each one suits
| Use case | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Day trips, phone and camera charging | RIVER 3 |
| Starlink Mini on weekend trips | Either; Plus for longer stays with solar |
| Home office desktop or NAS backup | RIVER 3 Plus |
| Van or car camping with a 12V fridge | RIVER 3 Plus (plus extra battery) |
| Lightest possible kit | RIVER 3 |

FAQ
What is the main difference between the RIVER 3 and RIVER 3 Plus?
Output and expandability. The Plus delivers 600W continuous (1,200W X-Boost) and can expand to 858Wh; the RIVER 3 delivers 300W (600W X-Boost) at a fixed 245Wh.
Do both charge in one hour?
Yes. EcoFlow lists 0–100% AC charging in one hour for both.
Can the RIVER 3 use a 200W solar panel?
Its input is limited to 110W and 30V, so a 200W panel will only charge at up to 110W, and only if its open-circuit voltage is within 30V. The Plus accepts up to 220W and 55V.
Is the RIVER 3 Plus a UPS?
EcoFlow rates its switchover at under 10 ms and includes PC/NAS shutdown software via USB-B.
How heavy are they?
The RIVER 3 weighs 7.8 lb and the RIVER 3 Plus weighs 10.4 lb, per EcoFlow.
Bottom line
The RIVER 3 is a light, quiet 245Wh station for electronics and short trips. The RIVER 3 Plus costs more and weighs a bit more, but its 600W output, 220W solar input, faster UPS and 858Wh expansion make it the more flexible long-term pick.
