The EcoFlow Delta 3 Max has a 2,048Wh battery, but you will never get all 2,048 watt-hours out of the AC outlets. This post explains why. It covers the two numbers that decide your real runtime, efficiency and idle draw, and how to turn them into honest runtime estimates before you buy.

What The Solar Lab Measured on the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max
In the video and in their written review, The Solar Lab reports:
- About 79% AC efficiency. They call it just short of an “A” grade.
- About 27W of idle draw with the inverter on and nothing plugged in.
- About 68 minutes for a full wall charge from empty.
- Better surge handling than they usually see from EcoFlow.
They also list the downsides: no expansion, a single 500W solar input, no built-in light, and a confusing lineup. We cover the lineup mess in our Delta 3 Max vs Max Plus vs Delta 2 Max comparison.
Why Efficiency Matters More Than the Capacity Number
The 2,048Wh rating describes the battery cells. Getting that energy out of a 120V outlet means converting DC battery power to AC, and that conversion loses energy as heat. At 79%, a full EcoFlow Delta 3 Max delivers roughly:
2,048Wh × 0.79 ≈ 1,620Wh at the AC outlets
That figure is the one to plan around. It also explains the Amazon reviewer who complained the unit “only lasted 4 hours at 400 watts.” The math says that result is normal: 1,620Wh ÷ 400W ≈ 4 hours.
Idle Draw: The Silent Runtime Killer
Idle draw is the power the inverter uses just to stay on. At about 27W, it barely matters for a 1,500W microwave. For small loads it matters a lot:
| Load on AC | Effective draw (load + ~27W idle) | Est. runtime at 79% efficiency |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi router + modem, ~20W | ~47W | ~34 hours |
| Efficient fridge, ~60W average | ~87W | ~19 hours |
| Laptop + monitor, ~80W | ~107W | ~15 hours |
| TV, ~100W | ~127W | ~13 hours |
| Space heater, 1,500W | ~1,527W | ~1 hour |
Estimates, not tests. Real numbers move with temperature, load type and how the fridge cycles.
For the router, the inverter uses more power than the router itself. The Solar Lab makes a related point in the video: with the inverter on and nothing plugged in, a full battery would idle for roughly three days (2,048Wh ÷ 27W ≈ 76 hours).
How to Get More Out of the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max
- Use DC when you can. The 12V car socket on the back (126W max) and the USB-C ports skip the AC inverter. A 12V fridge on DC runs roughly three times longer than the same fridge on AC. See our camping and 12V fridge guide.
- Turn the AC inverter off when nothing needs it. Don’t leave it on overnight just to charge a phone.
- Group small AC loads together. One inverter feeding the router, modem and a lamp at once pays the idle cost once, not three times.
- Set AC Timeout carefully. Turning the inverter off automatically saves energy, but it can shut off a cycling fridge. For fridges and freezers, set it to “Never” in the app. We explain why in the fridge runtime guide.
Other Takeaways From The Solar Lab Video
Beyond the numbers, a few points from the review are worth repeating:
- Port layout: all four AC outlets and the USB ports face the front and are angled, so bulky chargers don’t block each other. Only the 12V socket and the inputs are on the back.
- Noise: they found it quiet enough to sit next to while working or sleeping. That matches EcoFlow’s claim of 25dB or less at 600W.
- The “less for less” argument: compared with the Delta 2 Max, the Delta 3 Max drops expansion, half the solar input and two AC outlets, but it costs less. Their verdict is that it’s a solid entry-level 2kWh backup unit, not a true Delta 2 Max replacement.
What Viewers Asked in the Comments
The comment section raised a few recurring questions:
- “Can I add an extra battery?” No. The Delta 3 Max has no extra-battery port. Read is the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max expandable for the details and the workarounds people propose.
- “Can I use it while charging from solar?” Yes. Solar charging and output can run at the same time. With only 500W of solar input, though, heavy daytime use leaves little to store for the night.
- Microwave trouble: one viewer reported problems running microwaves on the Delta 3 Max and Max Plus. We haven’t tested this ourselves yet. It’s on our video list.
- Low-watt meter accuracy: another viewer asked how accurate the on-screen watt reading is under 50W. That’s a fair question we plan to check with a plug-in meter.
Our Testing Plan
We’ll measure the Delta 3 Max ourselves: full-discharge efficiency at 100W, 400W and 1,000W loads, idle draw with the AC on and off, and screen readings against a calibrated plug-in meter. We’ll embed the video here when it’s live.

EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Efficiency FAQ
How many usable watt-hours does the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max have?
On AC, plan for about 1,600–1,700Wh. That’s 79–85% of the 2,048Wh rating, depending on the load. DC loads usually see less loss.
What is the Delta 3 Max’s idle power draw?
The Solar Lab measured about 27W with the AC inverter on and no load. EcoFlow doesn’t publish an official figure.
Why does my Delta 3 Max run out faster than the screen predicted?
The time-remaining estimate is based on the current draw. When a fridge compressor cycles on or a heater kicks in, the estimate jumps. Use the math above for planning.
Is 79% efficiency good for a power station?
It’s typical to slightly above average for a 2kWh station on AC. Some rivals advertise lower idle draw. See how it stacks up in our Delta 3 Max vs Jackery, Anker and Bluetti comparison.
