TOPDON Jump Starter Review: V2200 and JS3000

TOPDON’s JumpSurge lineup covers a wide range of vehicles, and two of its most-searched models sit at different points on the size scale. According to TOPDON’s U.S. product pages, the V2200 delivers 2,200 peak amps (500A for 2 seconds) from a 16,000mAh (59.2Wh) pack and is rated for gas engines up to 8.0 liters and diesel engines up to 6.0 liters. The JumpSurge3000 (JS3000) steps up to 3,000 peak amps (750A for 2 seconds), 24,000mAh (88.8Wh) and engines up to 9.0L gas or 7.0L diesel. On Oct. 17, 2026, TOPDON’s U.S. store listed them at $109.99 and $139.99. Below I compare their specs, work out which engines and trips each one suits, and explain the features that matter at the roadside.

All specs below come from TOPDON’s U.S. product pages and its JS3000 product profile. Charge counts and recharge times are my own estimates, and I’ve shown the math. You can check the current TOPDON JS3000 listing on Amazon. For the V2200, see TOPDON’s V2200 page.

Quick Verdict

  • TOPDON V2200: a good fit for most cars, SUVs, half-ton pickups and boats with gas engines up to 8.0L. Its 60W USB-C port is the faster of the two for laptops.
  • TOPDON JS3000: the better pick for larger diesels (up to 7.0L), cold climates (rated down to -4°F) and anyone who wants more jumps per charge (up to 45) and a brighter 400-lumen light.

Which Engines Each One Covers

Engine-size ratings are the quickest way to choose. Bigger engines, especially diesels with high compression and glow plugs, need more current to crank.

Vehicle example Engine V2200 JS3000
Compact car 2.0L gas Yes Yes
Midsize SUV 3.5L V6 gas Yes Yes
Full-size pickup 5.7L V8 gas Yes Yes
Heavy-duty pickup 7.3L V8 gas Yes (within 8.0L) Yes
Diesel pickup 6.7L diesel Above its 6.0L diesel rating Yes (within 7.0L)
Small diesel SUV 3.0L diesel Yes Yes

A 6.7L diesel pickup is where the line falls. It’s beyond the V2200’s 6.0L diesel rating and within the JS3000’s 7.0L. For more diesel options, see our best jump starter for diesel trucks guide.

How to Jump-Start with Either Model

The basic procedure is the same for both units. Always follow the specific steps and rest intervals in TOPDON’s user manual for your model.

  1. Check the pack. Make sure the LED indicator shows a good charge before you begin.
  2. Turn off the vehicle’s accessories (headlights, HVAC, radio), and put the ignition in the off position.
  3. Connect the clamps to the jump starter if they’re detachable, then attach the red clamp to the battery’s positive (+) terminal.
  4. Attach the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal or a solid unpainted metal ground on the engine block, as your vehicle manual directs.
  5. Power on the jump starter and wait for the ready indication.
  6. Start the vehicle with short cranking attempts. If it doesn’t start, wait before trying again so the pack and the starter motor can cool.
  7. Once it’s running, turn the pack off, remove the black clamp first and then the red, and let the engine run to recharge the battery.

Because both clamp leads are fairly short (250mm positive), position the pack on a stable surface close to the battery before connecting.

Boost Mode: For Very Dead Batteries

Most jump starters won’t deliver power unless they detect some voltage at the clamps. That’s a safety feature that stops sparks if the clamps touch. When a battery is too flat to register, boost mode overrides that check for a short window (30 seconds on the JS3000, per TOPDON) so you can crank. Use it only after confirming the clamps are on the correct terminals, since boost bypasses the normal detection.

Worked Examples: Power Bank and Recharging

Both units double as USB power banks. After conversion losses, I plan on about 85% of rated watt-hours being usable:

Task V2200 (~50Wh usable) JS3000 (~75Wh usable)
Phone charges (~15Wh battery) About 3 About 5
Tablet charges (~30Wh) About 1.7 About 2.5
Laptop top-up (~50Wh) About 1 at up to 60W About 1.5 at up to 45W

Recharge time: at full USB-C input, 59.2Wh / 60W ≈ 1 hour in theory for the V2200, and 88.8Wh / 45W ≈ 2 hours for the JS3000. Real charging tapers near full, so plan on roughly 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours with a matching PD charger.

Why so many jumps per charge? A typical start pulls a few hundred amps for a second or two. At around 12V x 300A x 2 seconds, that’s only about 2Wh per start. That’s why packs of this size are rated for dozens of jumps, though cold engines and long cranking use more.

Cold-Weather Use

The two models differ most in their temperature ratings. The V2200 is rated from 14°F to 104°F, while the JS3000 is rated from -4°F to 140°F. If you live where winter mornings drop below about 15°F, which is exactly when batteries fail, the JS3000 is the safer choice. Keep either unit topped up. Lithium packs lose some output in the cold, and storing them in the cabin rather than the trunk on frigid nights helps.

Using the DC Output

Both have a 16.8V, 10A DC port. That voltage is above a typical 12V accessory’s nominal rating, so check your device’s input range before plugging in. It’s intended for compatible accessories such as tire inflators.

Keeping It Ready

  • Recharge every few months. Lithium jump packs slowly self-discharge.
  • Check the 4-LED indicator before a road trip, and recharge if it’s at two bars or fewer.
  • Store it in the included bag or case with the clamps disconnected.
  • After a jump, let the vehicle run so the alternator can recharge the battery. If the battery keeps dying, get it tested. A smart charger with a repair mode can help sulfated batteries, as covered in our NOCO GENIUS5 repair mode guide.

FAQ

Which is better, the TOPDON V2200 or the JS3000?

For most gas cars and trucks up to 8.0L, the V2200 is enough and has the faster 60W USB-C port. Choose the JS3000 for diesels up to 7.0L, sub-15°F climates, or more jumps per charge.

Can the V2200 start a diesel truck?

Yes, for diesel engines up to 6.0L, per TOPDON. Larger diesels, such as 6.7L engines, are within the JS3000’s 7.0L rating.

How many jump starts per charge?

Up to 35 for the V2200 and up to 45 for the JS3000, per TOPDON.

Can I take a TOPDON jump starter on a plane?

Both packs are under 100Wh (59.2Wh and 88.8Wh). Lithium jump starters in that range generally must go in carry-on bags, not checked luggage. Check TSA and your airline’s rules before flying.

Can I charge a laptop with it?

Yes. The V2200’s USB-C outputs up to 60W, and the JS3000’s up to 45W, which is enough for many ultrabooks.

What’s the warranty?

One year on both. The JS3000 page also lists a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line

Both TOPDON jump starters are easy to recommend. The V2200 handles the large majority of gas vehicles, charges a laptop at 60W and costs less. The JS3000 adds headroom for 7.0L diesels, works down to -4°F, has a 400-lumen light and gives up to 45 jumps per charge.
