Victron vs EcoFlow: DIY System or Power Station?

Victron vs EcoFlow compared: a modular DIY system versus an all-in-one Delta 3 Max power station. Output, solar, charging, expansion and who should buy each.

Victron vs EcoFlow isn’t a like-for-like fight. Victron makes components (inverter-chargers, MPPTs, shunts and DC-DC chargers) that you wire into a custom system. EcoFlow sells all-in-one power stations like the Delta 3 Max: battery, inverter, charger and solar controller in one box you plug in. Which is better depends on whether you want to build or just buy.

Choose Victron If

  • You’re building a permanent van, RV, boat or cabin system.
  • You want to scale battery, solar and inverter size over time.
  • You want to repair or replace one part instead of the whole unit.
  • You need large solar arrays or 24V/48V systems.

Choose EcoFlow If

  • You want power today with zero wiring.
  • You need portability for camping, job sites or home backup.
  • 2kWh and 500W of solar cover your needs.

Cost (Estimate)

A Victron system’s cost depends heavily on the battery and how many components you add, so a fair comparison needs real quotes. We don’t quote a Victron system price here; check current prices for each component. EcoFlow’s Delta 3 Max has sold for about $879 in our earlier checks.

Victron lists every MultiPlus-II variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.

Worked Example: A Weekend of Van Loads

Here’s a typical daily load for a small van, and how each option handles it. Wattages are examples; check your own appliances’ labels.

LoadPowerHours per dayEnergy per day (estimate)
12V compressor fridge≈ 45W average when running10 (cycling)≈ 450Wh
LED lights15W575Wh
Roof fan20W6120Wh
Laptop and phones60W4240Wh
Coffee maker (via inverter)1,000W0.2200Wh
Total≈ 1,085Wh
  • Delta 3 Max (2,048Wh): about 1.7 days with no charging (2,048 × 0.9 ÷ 1,085, allowing for inverter and conversion losses).
  • Victron system with a 12V 200Ah lithium battery (≈ 2,560Wh): about 2.3 days on the same allowance, and the battery can be doubled later.

Estimates; real figures depend on temperature and how loads are powered.

Worked Example: Solar Top-Up

With 400W of panels on a sunny day giving roughly 4 peak sun hours, expect around 1,300Wh of harvest after losses (estimate). That nearly covers the load above on either system. The difference shows up when you want more solar: the Delta 3 Max is capped at its 500W solar input, while a Victron build adds another SmartSolar controller and more panels.

Charging While You Drive

  • Victron: an Orion XS DC-DC charger adds up to 50A (about 700W) from the alternator.
  • EcoFlow: charging from a 12V socket is far slower than wall or solar charging; EcoFlow also sells an Alternator Charger for faster charging in vehicles.

Getting Started With Each

EcoFlow, in four steps: unbox, charge from the wall, connect the app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and plug in your loads. Add panels to the solar input when ready.

Victron, in outline: plan loads and battery size, choose the inverter/charger, MPPT, DC-DC charger and SmartShunt, design the fusing and cable sizes from each manual, mount and wire, then set each device’s battery profile in VictronConnect. Many people hire an installer for the AC side.

Maintenance and Long-Term Ownership

Both use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in the examples here, which is rated for thousands of cycles. The ownership differences are practical:

  • Victron: each part has its own warranty and can be replaced on its own. If you upgrade from 400W to 800W of solar, only the controller and panels change. Firmware updates for each device come through VictronConnect.
  • EcoFlow: one warranty covers the whole unit, and updates arrive through the EcoFlow app. There’s nothing to maintain beyond keeping it charged, and EcoFlow recommends topping it up every few months in storage.

Space and Weight

A Delta 3 Max is a single box you can carry to a campsite. A Victron build spreads across a battery, an inverter/charger, a charge controller and busbars, usually mounted permanently under a bed or in a locker. If you share the vehicle with other uses, the power station’s portability is a real advantage; if the space is dedicated, a fixed system uses it more efficiently.

A Middle Path

Some owners start with a power station for camping trips, then build a Victron system when they commit to a full-time van or a boat. The power station then stays useful as a portable backup for the house or for trips away from the vehicle.

FAQ

Can I combine Victron and EcoFlow?

Some people charge a power station from a Victron system’s AC output; check both manuals and never connect two inverter outputs together.

Is Victron worth it over a power station for a van?

For a permanent build with more than about 500W of solar, usually yes. Our opinion, based on the specs above.

Which is better for home backup?

For a few appliances during an outage, a power station is the quickest option. For whole-circuit backup with large batteries, a Victron inverter/charger with a transfer switch is the more scalable route, installed by an electrician.

Can Victron monitoring show an EcoFlow?

No. Each uses its own app. Victron gear shows in VictronConnect and VRM, and EcoFlow in the EcoFlow app.
