Victron DC-DC Chargers Compared: Orion XS, Orion-Tr and More

Victron DC-DC chargers charge a house battery from a vehicle’s alternator and starter battery while the engine runs. They limit current to protect the alternator, run a proper multi-stage charge for lithium or lead-acid, and switch off when the engine stops. Victron’s current lineup splits into the non-isolated Orion XS and the isolated Orion-Tr Smart range.

Isolated vs Non-Isolated

An isolated charger keeps the input and output negatives separate. Victron’s Orion-Tr Smart datasheet lists 200V galvanic isolation. That matters on boats and anywhere the chassis isn’t a reliable common negative. In most vans and trucks, the battery negatives are already tied together, so the more efficient non-isolated Orion XS is the usual choice.

Smart Features Every Orion Shares

  • Engine-running detection. The charger turns on when the input voltage shows the engine is running, so it doesn’t drain the starter battery when parked. This works with smart alternators, or you can use a wired ignition signal.
  • Bluetooth and VictronConnect for charge profiles, current limits and history.
  • Parallel operation for more current.

How to Size One

Start with your alternator. A charger that pulls 50A continuously can overheat a small alternator at idle, which is why the Orion XS lets you dial current down in 0.1A steps. Then look at your house battery: Victron’s lithium datasheet recommends charging a 12.8V 100Ah battery at 50A or less. Finally, consider drive time. At 30A, a 2-hour drive puts back about 60Ah (estimate, before losses).

Datasheets and manuals for the Victron Orion XS and the Orion-Tr Smart are on Victron’s website.

Worked Example: Drive-Time Charging by Model

Using each model’s rated output at 40°C, here’s roughly how much charge goes back in per hour of driving:

ModelOutputPer 1-hour drive (estimate)Per 3-hour drive (estimate)
Orion XS 12/12-50A50A≈ 50Ah≈ 150Ah
Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-3030A≈ 30Ah≈ 90Ah
Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-1818A≈ 18Ah≈ 54Ah
Orion-Tr Smart 12/24-1010A at 24V≈ 10Ah at 24V (≈ 20Ah-equivalent at 12V)≈ 30Ah at 24V
Orion-Tr Smart 24/12-2020A≈ 20Ah≈ 60Ah

Estimates before losses. The final absorption stage takes less current as the battery fills.

Worked Example: Efficiency and Alternator Load

Efficiency decides how hard the alternator works for the same output:

  • Orion XS at 700W and 98.5%: about 711W from the alternator, or roughly 52A at 13.8V.
  • Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 at 360W and 87%: about 414W from the alternator, or roughly 30A at 13.8V.

Worked estimates. The XS turns more of the alternator’s work into stored energy, while the isolated Tr trades some efficiency for galvanic isolation.

Settings Worth Checking in VictronConnect

  • Battery profile. Pick the preset for your chemistry, or enter the voltages from your battery’s datasheet in the user-defined profile.
  • Charge current. Set it to suit both your alternator and your battery. Victron’s lithium datasheet recommends 50A or less for a 12.8V 100Ah battery.
  • Engine-running detection. Adjust the start and shutdown voltages if the default thresholds don’t match your vehicle’s alternator.
  • Input lockout. This protects the starter battery by stopping the charger if the input voltage falls too low.
  • History. The app keeps charge history so you can see how much each drive put back.

Installation Steps

  1. Fuse both ends. Put a fuse near the starter battery and another near the house battery, sized from the charger’s manual.
  2. Size the cables from the manual’s table. Long runs to the back of a van often need a heavier gauge.
  3. Mount the charger with clearance for airflow. The Orion XS is IP65, so it handles damper spots.
  4. Set it up in VictronConnect: choose the battery profile, set the charge current, and choose engine-running detection or a wired ignition signal.
  5. Add a GX device if you want the charger’s data on VRM alongside your solar and battery monitor.

FAQ

Do I need a DC-DC charger with a lithium house battery?

Usually yes. It controls charge voltage and protects the alternator from lithium’s low resistance.

Can I run two Orions?

Yes. Victron allows Orions to run in parallel.

Orion XS or Orion-Tr Smart 30A?

XS for more current and efficiency. Tr if you need galvanic isolation or a voltage change such as 12V to 24V.

Do Orion chargers work with lead-acid batteries?

Yes. VictronConnect has profiles for lead-acid and lithium, plus a user-defined option.

Can an Orion charge my house battery from solar?

No. Orion chargers take power from the vehicle’s starter battery and alternator. Add a SmartSolar MPPT for solar, wired to the house battery.

Can an Orion charge a 24V bank from a 12V vehicle?

Yes. The Orion-Tr Smart 12/24-10 converts 12V input to charge a 24V battery.
