Charging a 300Ah lithium bank takes a long drive: this Orion XS charge time guide works through how many hours the Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A needs to fill one. The math uses the charger’s official 50A rating and the battery specs, and it explains why real drives often take longer.
Orion XS Charge Time: The Basic Math
| Starting point | Ah to replace | At 50A (bulk) |
|---|---|---|
| 50% (150Ah left) | 150Ah | ~3.0 hours |
| 20% (60Ah left) | 240Ah | ~4.8 hours |
| 0% (empty) | 300Ah | ~6.0 hours |
Estimate. Divides Ah by the Orion XS’s 50A maximum and assumes the full 50A reaches the battery the whole time.
At about 14V, 50A is the 700W continuous output Victron lists. That’s 50 × 14 = 700W.
Why It Usually Takes Longer
- Absorption. Near full, the charger holds absorption voltage and current tapers. For lithium, the Orion XS manual sets a fixed 2-hour absorption by default. The last few percent take longer than the bulk math suggests.
- Heat derating. Victron rates full power up to 40°C, then derates 1.5% per °C. In a hot van at 50°C, that’s about 15% less, roughly 42.5A.
- Smart alternators. On Euro 6 vehicles, the alternator can switch off while you drive. The XS may then decide the engine has stopped and pause charging. An external engine-running signal on the L-pin fixes this.
- Cable voltage drop. The XS lowers current to keep its input voltage above the shutdown level. Undersized cable means less than 50A.
- Loads running while you drive, such as a fridge, take part of the 50A before it reaches the battery.
Two Orion XS Units
Victron allows any number of Orion XS chargers in parallel. Two units give up to 100A, cutting the 20%-to-full bulk time to about 2.4 hours. Before doing this, check your alternator rating. 100A is a lot for many stock alternators. You can lower each unit’s current in 0.1A steps.
Is 50A Safe for the Battery?
Check your battery’s maximum charge current. Victron’s own Lithium Battery 12.8/330 Smart lists a recommended maximum of 300A or less, so 50A or 100A is well within that. Charging is only allowed from +5°C on that battery.
Combine It With Solar
A SmartSolar 100/50 adds up to 50A on a sunny day. Driving plus solar together can fill a 300Ah bank much faster than either alone.
Victron lists every Orion XS variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.
Worked Example: A Typical Travel Day
A van with a 300Ah lithium battery starts the morning at 40% after a night of fridge, lights and laptop use, about 180Ah to replace. The drive to the next campsite is 3 hours.
- Bulk at 50A: 3 hours × 50A ≈ 150Ah, if the full current reaches the battery.
- Fridge running during the drive: about 4A on average, so roughly 46A actually goes into the battery, or about 138Ah over 3 hours.
- Result: the battery arrives at roughly 86% (40% + 138 ÷ 300).
Estimates assuming cool conditions, adequate cabling and an alternator that supplies the current. Add a sunny afternoon on a SmartSolar and the bank is full by evening.
Worked Example: Hot Day Derating
On a 45°C day in an engine bay or closed cabinet, the 1.5% per °C derating above 40°C gives about 7.5% less, roughly 46A. On a 3-hour drive that’s around 139Ah instead of 150Ah. Estimate. Mounting the Orion XS somewhere cooler, with clearance for airflow, keeps it nearer its full 50A.
Choosing Cable Size
Thicker cable keeps input voltage up and current at its maximum. For 50A on a 12V system, Victron’s manual gives recommended cable cross-sections by length; as a general guide, longer runs from the starter battery to the rear of a van need heavier cable. Fuse both the input and output cables close to their batteries, using fuse ratings from the Orion XS manual.
| Cable run (one way, est.) | Typical cable size for 50A (est.) |
|---|---|
| Up to 3m | 10mm² (≈ 8 AWG) |
| 3–5m | 16mm² (≈ 6 AWG) |
| 5–7m | 25mm² (≈ 4 AWG) |
Rule-of-thumb estimates for about 3% voltage drop; check Victron’s manual and local codes for your installation.
Setting Up the Orion XS for a 300Ah Bank
- Open VictronConnect and select the lithium charge profile, or enter the battery maker’s absorption and float voltages.
- Leave the charge current at 50A, or reduce it if your alternator is small.
- Choose the engine-shutdown detection method: voltage-based, or the L-pin for an external engine-running signal on smart alternators.
- Enable VE.Smart Networking to share battery voltage and temperature with a SmartShunt, so the charger sees the true battery voltage.
Checking Your Alternator Has Headroom
The Orion XS can draw a little over 50A from the starter side at full output (about 700W out ÷ around 98% efficiency, estimate), on top of the vehicle’s own loads. Most modern alternators on vans have plenty of headroom for one unit. For two units in parallel, check the alternator’s rated output and consider reducing each unit’s current.
Orion XS vs Orion-Tr Smart for a 300Ah Bank
The Orion-Tr Smart isolated models come in ratings up to 30A on 12/12, so the 50A Orion XS fills a 300Ah bank faster. One XS at 50A covers in about 6 hours what a 30A Orion-Tr Smart would take about 10 hours to do from empty (estimates, bulk only). The Orion-Tr Smart’s galvanic isolation suits systems where the two batteries must stay separated, while the XS’s higher current and efficiency suit most van and RV builds.
Monitoring the Charge
VictronConnect shows the Orion XS’s input voltage, output current and charge state in real time, and its history. Paired with a SmartShunt, you can see exactly how many amp-hours each drive puts back.
FAQ
Will idling charge it?
Only if the alternator can supply the current at idle. Many can’t deliver 50A extra at idle.
Can I see charge progress?
Yes, in VictronConnect. A SmartShunt gives the battery’s true state of charge.
Is the 70A version faster?
It is, but Victron rates the 70A model IP20, so it’s for dry indoor spaces only.
How long does it take to fully charge from 50%?
Around 3 hours of bulk at the full 50A, plus a short absorption period near full, so roughly 3.5 to 4 hours in good conditions (estimate).
Can the Orion XS charge my starter battery too?
It charges in one direction, from the starter side to the house battery. For maintaining the starter battery from the house bank, a separate small charger or the vehicle’s own system is used.
