Victron Marine and Shore Power Gear: How to Choose (2026)

Victron marine gear covers everything between the shore power pedestal and your boat’s batteries. That includes isolation transformers, galvanic isolators, autotransformers, inverter/chargers and the GX devices that show it all on your chartplotter. This guide explains what each product does and links to our deeper posts. Every spec comes from Victron’s own datasheets.

Why Shore Power Needs Special Care

Victron’s isolation transformer datasheet explains the problem. Connecting the shore ground to the metal parts of your boat causes galvanic corrosion, which quickly dissolves sacrificial anodes and attacks the shaft and propeller. But leaving the ground disconnected is “extremely dangerous,” because a GFCI won’t trip and a fuse won’t blow if there’s a short circuit to metal on board.

Victron Marine Isolation Transformers

An isolation transformer removes any electrical connection between the shore supply and the boat. Victron says this eliminates the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.

All models use a toroidal transformer, have an input circuit breaker, and include soft start, which stops the shore breaker tripping on inrush current. The 2500W and 4500W units can also convert between 115V and 230V. The Auto model raises the output by a 1:1.05 ratio.

Galvanic Isolators

A galvanic isolator is the lower-cost option. It stays in the shore ground wire and blocks the small DC currents that cause corrosion. Victron sells the VDI-16, VDI-32 and VDI-64. It’s a good fit for smaller boats where an isolation transformer is too heavy or too expensive.

Autotransformers

Victron’s autotransformer can step voltage up or down and balance split-phase 120/240V loads. That matters on boats with 240V appliances fed by a generator or two stacked inverters. Victron’s example: a 1200W hairdryer draws 10A from one 120V leg alone.

Charging and Inverting On Board

  • MultiPlus-II and Quattro: inverter/chargers with PowerAssist to boost weak shore supplies. The Quattro takes two AC inputs (shore and generator).
  • Blue Smart IP67 and Phoenix Smart IP43 chargers: shore chargers, with IP43 models that can charge up to three battery banks.
  • Cyrix and Argo FET: charge several battery banks from one alternator.

Monitoring on Your MFD

Victron’s Cerbo GX manual covers Raymarine, Navico, Garmin and Furuno integration by app, plus NMEA 2000 output for tank levels and battery data.

Worked Example: A 30-Foot Sailboat on US Shore Power

A sailboat plugging into a 30A 120V marina pedestal, with a MultiPlus-II 12/3000 and a 300Ah lithium house bank:

  • A galvanic isolator such as the VDI-32 in the shore ground wire blocks the small DC currents that cause corrosion, at a modest weight.
  • The MultiPlus-II’s AC input current limit is set to 30A, and PowerAssist covers short peaks from the water heater and microwave.
  • The charger refills the bank overnight, while a Cerbo GX sends battery and tank data to the chartplotter over NMEA 2000.

This is a compact, budget-friendly setup for a boat that mostly uses one marina.

Worked Example: A Cruising Boat Visiting Different Marinas

A cruising motor yacht that travels between US and European marinas:

  • A 4500W Auto 115/230V isolation transformer auto-selects the input voltage, so the boat sees the same supply in every port.
  • The transformer’s soft start prevents nuisance trips on pedestal breakers when it’s switched on.
  • With full isolation, no galvanic isolator or polarity alarm is needed, as Victron’s datasheet notes.
  • At 21.8kg, it needs a solid mounting position low in the hull.

Worked Example: A Boat With 240V Appliances on a 50A Supply

A larger boat with 120V circuits and a 240V dryer on a 120/240V 50A supply can use a Victron Autotransformer to balance loads across the two legs. When one 120V leg is busy with a water heater and a microwave, the autotransformer spreads the imbalance so both supply wires share it more evenly.

Building the System in Order

  1. Start at the shore inlet: cable, inlet and breaker sized to the supply.
  2. Add the shore protection: galvanic isolator or isolation transformer.
  3. Feed the inverter/charger’s AC input.
  4. Add DC charging sources: alternator through a Cyrix, Argo FET or Orion, and solar through SmartSolar MPPTs.
  5. Add monitoring: a battery monitor and a GX device for the chartplotter and VRM.
  6. Have a qualified marine electrician check the whole installation.

Charging Several Banks

Many boats have a house bank, a starter battery and sometimes a bow thruster or windlass battery. The Phoenix Smart IP43 chargers with three outputs cover all three from shore. From the engine, an Argo FET or Cyrix shares alternator charge across banks, and an Orion handles a lithium house bank properly.

Keeping Anodes Healthy

Whichever shore protection you pick, check sacrificial anodes at each haul-out. Steady anode wear is normal. With a galvanic isolator or isolation transformer doing its job, wear should stay close to what the boat sees on its mooring.

FAQ

Do I need both an isolation transformer and a galvanic isolator?

No. Victron says an isolation transformer removes the need for a galvanic isolator.

Which Victron marine transformer works on US 30A shore power?

The 4500W model is rated 38A at 115V. Check your inlet and breaker sizes.

Which is lighter, an isolation transformer or a galvanic isolator?

A galvanic isolator is far lighter. Victron’s isolation transformers weigh from 12.1kg to 28.17kg.

Can a Victron Cerbo GX show data on a Garmin chartplotter?

Victron’s Cerbo GX manual covers Garmin integration, along with Raymarine, Navico and Furuno.

Do I need a separate charger if I have a MultiPlus-II?

Not for shore charging. The MultiPlus-II includes a charger. A separate charger can still help with extra banks.
