Victron Lithium Battery vs Battle Born and SOK: Which LiFePO4 Fits Your Victron System?

Comparing a Victron lithium battery vs Battle Born or SOK comes down to one question: how do you want the battery to talk to the rest of your Victron gear? All three use LiFePO4 chemistry. The difference is where the battery management lives and what each brand promises. Here’s the comparison, using only the makers’ own datasheets and product pages.

How Victron’s Approach Differs

Victron’s Lithium Battery Smart has no built-in BMS. Each battery monitors its own cells and sends that data to an external Victron BMS through an M8 cable. The BMS then switches chargers and loads on or off. Victron offers six BMS models for different systems. That makes the setup more complex, but it gives you tight control over every charger in the system. Up to 20 batteries can run in one system, and Bluetooth shows the cell voltages and temperature.

Victron’s datasheet rates the battery for 92% round-trip efficiency. Charging is allowed from +5°C to +50°C, and discharging from -20°C to +50°C.

Battle Born: Drop-In Simplicity

The BB10012 has an internal BMS, so it works as a drop-in battery. Battle Born lists 100% usable depth of discharge, 3,000–5,000 cycles, a 48V maximum series voltage, and a 10-year warranty. BattleBorn is also on Victron’s own list of tested compatible batteries.

SOK: Victron-Ready and User Serviceable

SOK markets its batteries as user serviceable and “Victron ready.” It says they share voltage, current and state of charge with Victron inverters and monitors. SOK claims up to 8,000 cycles and a 7-year limited warranty. Check the communication details for your exact SOK model before you buy.

Which Should You Pick?

  • Victron Lithium Smart: for a system that’s all Victron, where you want the BMS to control every charger and load. Budget for the BMS too.
  • Battle Born: for an easy drop-in upgrade, a long warranty and US assembly.
  • SOK: for a lower-cost battery with Victron communication, if you’re comfortable checking compatibility yourself.

Victron says third-party batteries are permitted under warranty, but support comes from the battery supplier.

Setting Up Each Battery With Victron Chargers

Low-temperature chargingBMS stops charging below +5°CDepends on the model; check the maker’s specs

State of chargeSmartShunt or BMV, plus cell data over BluetoothSmartShunt or BMV, or the battery’s own data if supported

Example: A Van With a MultiPlus and MPPT

  • Victron route: two Lithium Smart 12.8V/200Ah batteries, a VE.Bus BMS V2, a MultiPlus 12/3000 and a SmartSolar MPPT. The BMS signals the MultiPlus and MPPT to stop charging if a cell goes high, and switches off loads through a BatteryProtect if a cell goes low.
  • Drop-in route: four 100Ah drop-in batteries in parallel with the same MultiPlus and MPPT, with charge voltages set to the battery maker’s figures and a SmartShunt for state of charge. Fewer parts, and each battery protects itself.

Using a Cerbo GX With Each Option

With Victron’s batteries, the Cerbo GX shows battery data through the Victron BMS. With batteries that support Victron communication, the Cerbo can read voltage, current and state of charge directly, and DVCC can pass the battery’s charge limits to every charger. With batteries that don’t communicate, a SmartShunt gives the Cerbo accurate state of charge.

Cold-Weather Considerations

Victron’s datasheet allows charging from +5°C. In a cold climate, plan for battery heating, either from the battery itself, if the model includes heating, or with a heater pad switched by a Cerbo GX temperature relay. Battle Born and SOK both list cold-weather options for some models; check the current product pages.

Cost of the Whole System

When you compare prices, include everything the battery needs to work:

  • Victron Lithium Smart: the battery, a Victron BMS and, depending on the system, a BatteryProtect or Lynx Smart BMS.
  • Drop-in batteries: the batteries plus a SmartShunt for accurate state of charge.

A Victron system costs more up front, but the BMS’s control of every charger and load is what many full-Victron builders want.

Expanding Later

Victron allows up to 20 Lithium Smart batteries in one system, with series and parallel combinations. For drop-in batteries, check each maker’s limits for parallel and series connections, such as Battle Born’s 48V maximum series voltage.

FAQ

Can I run a Victron lithium battery without a Victron BMS?

No. Victron says the Lithium Battery Smart must be used with a compatible Victron BMS.

Will a Battle Born battery work with a MultiPlus?

Yes. Set the charge voltages to the battery maker’s values.

Do I need a SmartShunt with a Victron lithium battery?

It’s recommended. The Victron BMS protects the cells, while a SmartShunt or BMV shows the bank’s state of charge and remaining time.

Can I mix brands in one bank?

Avoid it. Batteries with different BMS designs and capacities don’t share current evenly.
