A Victron firmware update fixes bugs, adds features and sometimes improves charging for new battery types. Most updates take a couple of minutes. A few go wrong, usually because of a weak Bluetooth link or the wrong tool for the device. This guide covers both update paths: VictronConnect for chargers, shunts and MPPTs, and Venus OS for the Cerbo GX and other GX devices. It’s all based on Victron’s own manuals.
Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.
Victron Firmware Update Paths
| Device type | Tool | Internet needed? |
|---|---|---|
| SmartSolar, SmartShunt, Blue Smart, Orion | VictronConnect (Bluetooth or USB) | No, the files ship inside the app |
| MultiPlus, Quattro (VE.Bus) | Separate VE.Bus firmware guide, MK3-USB | Varies |
| Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX | Venus OS online, or microSD/USB | Optional |

Updating With VictronConnect
VictronConnect works offline. Victron says the latest app version includes the newest firmware available when that version was released.
- Update VictronConnect itself first.
- Connect to the device. If an update is available, an orange exclamation mark appears over the settings cog.
- Tap the cog, then tap UPDATE on the “Update available” banner.
- Keep your phone close, and don’t switch apps until it finishes.
Victron says settings and history are kept. Some versions are mandatory, and the app will ask you to install them right away. To check your current version, tap the three dots, then Product info.
If a VictronConnect Update Fails
Victron’s troubleshooting chapter says you can always restart an update, because it starts again every time you connect. Keep the phone as close as you can. If an Android phone keeps failing, try another phone. For a stuck VE.Direct Smart dongle, there’s a recovery mode: hold the “Clear PIN” button while you plug it in, then reconnect within 30 seconds.
Updating a Cerbo GX (Venus OS)
- Online: Settings → General → Firmware → Online updates → Check for updates. You can also turn on automatic daily checks.
- Offline: copy the firmware file to a microSD card or USB stick, then use Settings → General → Firmware → Install from SD/USB.
On a Cerbo without a touchscreen, use Remote Console to reach these menus.
Rolling Back
The GX keeps your previous version as a stored firmware backup, so you can switch back without internet or an SD card. You can also install a specific older version from SD or USB.
Safe-Update Checklist
- Make sure the battery isn’t close to cutting off.
- Update one device at a time.
- Note your settings, or save them in VictronConnect, before major updates.
- For MultiPlus and Quattro units, follow Victron’s VE.Bus firmware guide.
See the VictronConnect app.
Worked Example: Updating a Small Van System
A van with a SmartSolar MPPT, a SmartShunt and an Orion XS, all with built-in Bluetooth:
- Update VictronConnect from your phone’s app store at home, while you have internet.
- Park with the solar charger in daylight and the battery well charged.
- Connect to the SmartShunt first; if the cog shows an update, install it and wait for it to finish.
- Repeat for the SmartSolar, then the Orion XS.
- Reopen each device and check Product info shows the new version and your settings are unchanged.
The whole job typically takes 10–15 minutes for three devices.
Worked Example: Updating a Cerbo GX in an RV
A Cerbo GX connected to campground Wi-Fi through a travel router:
- Open Remote Console, or the GX Touch, and go to Settings → General → Firmware.
- Check the current version, then select Online updates → Check for updates.
- Install the update and leave the Cerbo powered while it downloads and reboots, usually several minutes.
- After the restart, confirm the device list shows every connected product and VRM shows recent data.
If the RV has no internet, download the .swu file at home, copy it to a microSD card, and use Install from SD/USB instead.
Update Methods at a Glance
| Situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| Single Bluetooth product | VictronConnect on a phone |
| Product with no Bluetooth (VE.Direct) | VictronConnect with a VE.Direct to USB cable or Bluetooth dongle |
| MultiPlus or Quattro | VictronConnect with an MK3-USB, following Victron’s VE.Bus guide |
| GX device with internet | Online updates in Venus OS |
| GX device offline | microSD or USB stick |
| Remote site | VRM remote firmware updates for supported devices |
Remote Firmware Updates Through VRM
For systems with a GX device online, VRM can update many connected Victron products remotely. That’s especially useful for cabins, boats and RVs in storage, where a site visit isn’t practical. Check the system is in a stable state, with the battery well charged, before starting a remote update.
Venus OS Large
On the firmware menu, GX devices can also switch to the Venus OS Large image, which adds Node-RED and Signal K. Updates to the Large image follow the same online or SD/USB process as the standard image.
Keeping a Record
Note each device’s firmware version and the date you updated it, along with your saved VictronConnect settings files. If you ever need help from a dealer or the Victron Community, that information makes it quicker to get the right answer.
Good Habits Before Any Update
Make sure the battery is well charged, the system is not in the middle of a heavy load, and you’re close to the device with a strong Bluetooth signal. Updating during a quiet period, such as a sunny midday with loads off, keeps everything simple.
