Victron MultiPlus-II GX: An Inverter-Charger With GX Built In

The Victron MultiPlus-II GX is a MultiPlus-II inverter/charger with a GX monitoring device built in. You get a small display, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a BMS-Can port in the same box, so many systems don’t need a separate Cerbo GX. There’s one big catch for North American readers: every model in Victron’s datasheet is 230V. Here’s what it offers.

What the Built-In GX Adds

  • A 2 × 16 character display for battery, inverter and solar charger readings.
  • Wi-Fi and Ethernet for VictronConnect, Remote Console and Victron’s free VRM portal.
  • BMS-Can for a compatible CAN-bus battery. Victron notes this is not a VE.Can-compatible port.
  • A VE.Direct port and a USB port for a solar charger or battery monitor.
  • Parallel and three-phase systems need only one GX unit.

Other Features

  • PowerControl and PowerAssist to protect a weak grid or generator supply.
  • Auxiliary output (32A) for loads that should run only when AC input is present.
  • ESS options with an external 100A current sensor or energy meter, for self-consumption and grid-feed control.
  • Programmable relay for alarms, low voltage or genset start/stop.

The 230V Warning

The output is 230V AC, 50Hz (adjustable to 60Hz). It’s not a 120V product. For US RVs, vans and homes, look at the MultiPlus-II 120V or 2x120V plus a Cerbo GX instead.

Who It’s For

  • 230V homes, boats and off-grid systems in Europe, Australia and similar markets.
  • ESS installs that want fewer boxes on the wall.
  • Simple systems with one VE.Direct MPPT and a CAN battery.

Mobile Use

Victron lists “certain mobile applications” alongside on-grid and off-grid storage. With 230V output it fits European vans and boats best.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • One VE.Direct port limits expansion compared with a Cerbo GX (three VE.Direct ports, VE.Can and relays).
  • No VE.Can port, so VE.Can MPPTs need a different GX device.
  • IP22, for indoor use.

Worked Example: A 230V Home ESS on the 48/5000

A home in a 230V country with a 48V 10kWh lithium battery, 4kW of panels on a VE.Direct SmartSolar 250/70 and an energy meter at the grid connection:

  • The built-in GX reads the energy meter and runs ESS, so the MultiPlus-II GX charges from surplus solar and discharges to cover household loads instead of importing from the grid.
  • The CAN-bus battery connects to the BMS-Can port, and DVCC passes the battery’s charge limits to the MultiPlus and the solar charger.
  • With 4,000W continuous at 25°C, the inverter covers most evening loads; a 9,000W peak handles motor starts.
  • Over an evening using 1.2kW for 4 hours, the battery supplies about 4.8kWh, roughly half the bank (estimate).

Worked Example: Backup Time During a Grid Outage

With the same 10kWh battery at 90% charge and an essential load of 500W (fridge, lights, router, gas boiler controls), the battery could run those loads for roughly 16 hours before reaching a 10% reserve (9kWh × 0.9 efficiency ÷ 0.5kW, estimate). Solar charging during the day extends that further. The transfer to backup happens through the built-in transfer switch.

Worked Example: Using the Auxiliary Output

Loads on the 32A auxiliary output only run when AC input is present. Putting a 2kW water heater element on it means the heater runs from grid or generator power, but switches off automatically during an outage so it doesn’t drain the battery. Example use.

Setting Up the Built-In GX

  1. Connect the unit to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Open VictronConnect or Remote Console to reach the GX menus.
  3. Set the battery monitor and enable DVCC if a CAN battery is connected.
  4. For ESS, run the ESS assistant setup and connect the energy meter or current sensor.
  5. Register the installation on VRM using its portal ID.
  6. Check the 2 × 16 display for battery, inverter and solar readings.

When to Add a Cerbo GX Instead

The built-in GX covers simple systems. A Cerbo GX becomes the better hub if you need:

  • More than one VE.Direct device, such as two solar charge controllers plus a SmartShunt.
  • VE.Can devices, like a SmartSolar RS or Lynx Smart BMS.
  • Tank and temperature inputs, or more relays.

Installation Notes

  • Mount it vertically on a solid wall in a dry indoor space (IP22).
  • At 20–31kg, it needs a strong mounting surface and two people to lift.
  • Size the DC cables and fuse from the manual for the 48V or 24V battery.
  • Have the AC side, earthing and any grid connection completed by a licensed electrician to local rules.

Parallel and Three-Phase

Several units can be combined for more power or three-phase supply, and only one of them needs its GX function in use, so a three-unit three-phase system still has a single GX handling monitoring and VRM.

FAQ

Is there a 120V MultiPlus-II GX?

Not in Victron’s MultiPlus-II GX datasheet, which lists 230V models only.

Do I still need a Cerbo GX?

Not for a simple system. Add one if you need more VE.Direct ports, VE.Can, tank inputs or relays.

Does it have a touch screen?

No. It has a 2 × 16 character display. Use Remote Console on a phone, tablet or computer, or add a GX Touch through a separate GX device, for a full graphical interface.

Can it connect to a VE.Can MPPT?

No. It has no VE.Can port, so use a VE.Direct MPPT or add a separate GX device.

Can it run at 60Hz?

Yes. Output is 50Hz by default and adjustable to 60Hz, though it remains a 230V product.
