Victron GX Touch 50 vs GX Touch 70: Picking the Right Display

The Victron GX Touch 50 and its bigger sibling, the GX Touch 70, are touchscreen displays for the Cerbo GX. They show the GX device’s full interface: system overview, battery, solar, tanks and every setting. They don’t work alone, since the Cerbo GX does the processing. Here’s what Victron’s Cerbo GX manual lists for both screens and their flush-mount versions.

What It Shows

The GX Touch runs the Cerbo GX’s own interface, which Victron’s manual describes in terms of:

  • Brief and Overview pages for a quick system summary.
  • A Boat page for marine and electric propulsion systems.
  • Switch pane controls, with relays and generator start/stop when configured.
  • The full Settings menu, so you can set DVCC, ESS, tank sensors and more right at the screen.

The manual also includes an option to deactivate touch input, which is useful for public or vibration-prone spots.

GX Touch 50 vs 70

  • GX Touch 50: smaller footprint for van dashboards, RV control panels and tight boat helms.
  • GX Touch 70: bigger, higher-resolution screen for a main panel or chart table.
  • Flush versions: IP65 instead of IP54, for installs flush with a panel.

Who It’s For

  • Cerbo GX owners who want a permanent on-wall display instead of a phone.
  • Boats and RVs where several people need to check the system at a glance.

What You Need

  • A Cerbo GX. The GX Touch connects with a single 2m cable, according to Victron’s specs. Victron’s manual has an FAQ entry on extending the cable between the Cerbo GX and the GX Touch, so read it before planning a longer run.
  • The Ekrano GX has its own built-in screen, so it doesn’t need a GX Touch.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Useless without a Cerbo GX.
  • IP54 on the standard versions, so mount them away from direct spray.
  • Fixed 2m cable between the screen and the Cerbo GX.

You can download the GX Touch 50 and 70 manual and datasheet from Victron Energy’s website.

Worked Example: A Van Dashboard Install

A camper van with a Cerbo GX under the passenger seat and a GX Touch 50 in the overhead console:

  • The 87 × 128mm screen fits a small cut-out above the cab, and at 12.4mm deep it sits almost flat.
  • The fixed 2m cable reaches from the seat base to the console if the Cerbo GX is placed close to the B-pillar. Measure the route first, since cables rarely run in a straight line.
  • The Overview page shows battery state of charge, solar input and DC loads, so anyone in the van can check power without a phone.

Worked Example: A Sailboat Chart Table

A 40-foot sailboat with a Cerbo GX in the electrical locker and a GX Touch 70 Flush at the chart table:

  • The 1024 × 600 screen shows more detail on the Boat page and the tank levels from fresh water and holding tanks.
  • The Flush version’s IP65 rating suits a spot near the companionway where spray can reach.
  • The 120 × 184mm footprint fits most chart-table panels. Check the depth behind the panel before cutting.

Mounting Options

  • Surface mount: the standard GX Touch 50 and 70 come with accessories for mounting on a flat surface.
  • Flush mount: the Flush versions sit level with the panel and carry IP65 protection.
  • Placement: pick a spot out of direct sun for readability and in easy reach for anyone who needs to check the system.

Setting It Up

  1. Mount the Cerbo GX and power it up.
  2. Connect the GX Touch cable to the GX Touch port on the Cerbo GX.
  3. The screen shows the GX interface straight away. Set the brightness and display-off time in the Settings menu.
  4. Choose the start-up page, such as Overview or Boat, so the screen opens on what you check most.
  5. Turn off touch input if the screen is in a busy or public area.

Ways to Use It Day to Day

  • Check battery state of charge and time-to-go before switching on a big load.
  • Start or stop a generator from the screen when generator start/stop is configured.
  • Watch solar yield across the day to see whether the batteries will be full by sunset.
  • Read tank levels without opening lockers.

Choosing a Size

Display vs Remote Console

Remote Console shows the same interface on a phone, tablet or laptop, either locally or through VRM. The GX Touch adds a screen that’s always on the wall, with no app to open and no device to charge. Many owners use both.

Readability in Different Light

The higher pixel count on the GX Touch 70 makes small numbers on the Overview page easier to read from a distance, which helps on a main RV panel or a busy boat. In a compact van, the GX Touch 50’s 800 × 480 resolution is easy to read at arm’s length. Whichever you pick, adjust brightness for night use so the screen doesn’t light up the cabin.

Planning the Cable Run

The 2m cable is the main limit on where the screen goes. Mount the Cerbo GX first, then hold the screen in its planned spot and route the cable along its real path, including bends and grommets. If 2m isn’t enough, move the Cerbo GX closer, or check Victron’s manual FAQ on cable extension before buying anything extra.

FAQ

Does the Victron GX Touch 50 work without a Cerbo GX?

No. It’s a display for the Cerbo GX.

Which is waterproof?

The Flush versions are IP65. The standard versions are IP54 without connectors.

Can I connect two GX Touch screens to one Cerbo GX?

The Cerbo GX has one GX Touch connection. Use Remote Console on another device for a second view.

Does the GX Touch use much power?

It’s powered through its cable from the Cerbo GX. Setting a display-off time in the settings keeps its share of standby draw low.

Which is better, GX Touch or Ekrano GX?

The Ekrano GX has a screen built in, so it’s one box instead of two. A Cerbo GX plus GX Touch lets you mount the screen and the GX device in different places.
