How Many Watts Does a Microwave Use? Rated vs Actual Draw

How many watts does a microwave use? More than the box says. The “1,000W” on the front is cooking (output) power. The magnetron and electronics are only about 60–70% efficient, so a 1,000W microwave typically draws about 1,400–1,700W from the outlet. That’s the number that matters for inverters and batteries.

Electrical work can be dangerous: follow the manual, fuse and size every cable correctly, and use a licensed electrician for anything connected to household wiring.

How Many Watts Does a Microwave Use? Output vs Input

Rated cooking powerTypical input drawAmps at 120V
700W~1,000–1,200W~8–10A
900W~1,250–1,450W~10.5–12A
1,000W~1,400–1,700W~12–14A
1,200W~1,600–1,900W~13–16A

Typical ranges. Your microwave’s nameplate (back or inside the door) lists its input watts or amps, so check it.

Where to Find the Input Rating

Look for “Input: 120V 60Hz 1500W” or “13A” on the label inside the door frame or on the back. If it only lists amps, multiply by 120.

Low Power Settings Still Draw Full Power

Most traditional microwaves cycle full power on and off at lower settings. At 50%, you get full draw half the time. Inverter microwaves can run at truly reduced power, which is easier on a battery system.

What Size Inverter for a Microwave?

  • Continuous rating at least 1.5× the microwave’s input watts is a safe target. A 1,500W-input unit wants about a 2,000W or larger pure sine inverter.
  • Pure sine is strongly recommended. Modified sine can make microwaves hum, heat up and cook slower.
  • At 12V, 1,500W AC means roughly 140A DC, so size cables and fuses for it.

Battery Cost per Use

Example math, 1,500W input, 3 minutes, 88% inverter efficiency: 1,500 × 0.05 h ÷ 0.88 ≈ 85Wh, about 7% of a 12V 100Ah lithium battery. Short bursts are affordable, but long cooking sessions add up.

Worked Example: Microwave on a 12V Battery and Inverter

Illustrative microwave: “1,000W” cooking power, label input 1,500W.

StepMathResult
AC inputLabel1,500W
DC from battery (assume 90% inverter)1,500 ÷ 0.9about 1,667W
DC current at 12.8V1,667 ÷ 12.8about 130A
3 minutes of cooking1,667 × 0.05habout 83Wh
Share of a 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery83 ÷ 1,280about 6.5%

The energy is small; the current is what matters. A 12V system needs heavy cable, a properly sized fuse and a battery rated for that discharge. See watts to amps at 12V, 120V and 240V and battery C-rating explained.

Typical Input Draw by Size

Cooking power (front label)Typical input drawAmps at 120V
700W compactabout 1,000–1,100Wabout 8.5–9A
900Wabout 1,300–1,400Wabout 11–12A
1,000Wabout 1,400–1,600Wabout 12–13A
1,200Wabout 1,600–1,800Wabout 13–15A

Typical ranges; the label on the back or inside the door shows your model’s input watts or amps.

Inverter Sizing Steps

  1. Read the input watts from the label.
  2. Add about 25% headroom: 1,500 × 1.25 ≈ 1,875W.
  3. Choose a pure sine inverter with at least that continuous rating; 2,000W is common for a 1,000W microwave.
  4. On 12V, plan cable and fusing for about 130–170A.

Energy Cost per Use

Illustrative: 1,500W × 5 minutes = 125Wh. At the EIA’s 2024 average residential price of about 16.5¢ per kWh, that’s about 2 cents.

Inverter Microwaves

Some models use inverter power supplies that can deliver lower power levels continuously instead of cycling on and off. At full power, their input draw is similar to a conventional unit of the same rating, so size for the label input either way.

Microwave vs Other Kitchen Appliances on Battery Power

Typical input ranges; check each appliance’s own label.

ApplianceTypical input drawTypical use per sessionEnergy per session (est.)
1,000W microwaveabout 1,400–1,600W3 minutesabout 75–80Wh
Electric kettleabout 1,200–1,500W4 minutesabout 80–100Wh
Air fryerabout 1,200–1,700W15 minutesabout 300–425Wh
Single induction burnerup to about 1,800W10 minutesup to about 300Wh
Drip coffee makerabout 600–1,200W10 minutesabout 100–200Wh

The microwave is one of the most battery-friendly ways to heat food because sessions are short. Its high power level is what sets the inverter size, while the energy per use stays modest.

Power Station Runtime Examples

Runtime math: usable capacity × inverter efficiency ÷ input watts. These are estimates assuming 90% efficiency and a 1,500W-input microwave:

Power station capacityTotal microwave time (est.)3-minute sessions (est.)
1,000Whabout 36 minutesabout 12
2,000Whabout 72 minutesabout 24
3,000Whabout 108 minutesabout 36

Check that the station’s continuous AC rating is above 1,500W before relying on these numbers.

Recharging With Solar

A 200W panel in a good location might produce around 600–800Wh on a clear day (estimate). That covers roughly seven to nine 3-minute microwave sessions, so a modest solar setup can comfortably keep up with daily reheating.

FAQ

Can a 1,000W inverter run a microwave?

Only a small one (about 600–700W cooking power), and it may struggle. 1,500–2,000W or more is safer for most.

How many amps does a microwave draw?

About 10–15A at 120V for most countertop models.

Will a microwave run on a portable power station?

Yes, if the station’s continuous output is above the microwave’s input watts.

Can I run a microwave on a 2,000W power station?

Often yes, if the station’s continuous output exceeds the microwave’s input watts.

Is a microwave a continuous load?

No. Typical use is minutes at a time, but size wiring for its full input current.

Does a microwave use power when it’s switched off?

A small amount for the clock and display, usually a few watts or less. Unplug it or switch the outlet off on a small battery system.

How do I make my microwave run reliably on an inverter?

Pick a pure sine inverter rated at least 1.25–1.5× the label input watts, with cables and fuses sized for the DC current.
