How much do solar panels cost for a house? The best public data comes from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), which tracks hundreds of thousands of real installs. Its October 2025 update covers systems installed in 2024. Here are those numbers, what they mean for a typical home in 2026, and why quotes vary so much.
How Much Do Solar Panels Cost per Watt?
| Residential PV installed in 2024 (LBNL) | Price per watt (DC, before incentives) |
|---|---|
| 20th percentile | $3.0/W |
| Median | $4.0/W |
| 80th percentile | $5.2/W |
| Median, cash purchase | $3.5/W |
| Median, loan-financed | $4.7/W |
How much does a 10 kW solar system cost?
At LBNL’s 2024 figures, $30,000 at the 20th percentile, $35,000 at the cash median and $40,000 at the overall median, before any state or local incentive.
Why are loan prices higher than cash prices?
LBNL found loan-financed systems had a higher median price, partly because loan fees get rolled into the system price.

LBNL notes that loan-financed systems cost more partly because loan fees get rolled into the upfront price. It also notes that the most common cash price was below $3/W, even though the median was higher.
What That Means for Your House (Example Math)
| System size | At $3.0/W | At $3.5/W | At $4.7/W |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5kW | $15,000 | $17,500 | $23,500 |
| 7kW | $21,000 | $24,500 | $32,900 |
| 10kW | $30,000 | $35,000 | $47,000 |
Illustrative only, using 2024 medians and percentiles. 2026 quotes may differ.
No federal credit in 2026: the 30% credit (25D) doesn’t apply to homeowner-owned systems installed after Dec 31, 2025 (IRS). These figures are your actual cost before any state or utility incentive.
What Drives Your Quote
- System size (kW) and roof complexity: steep pitch, multiple roof faces, tile or metal.
- Equipment: microinverters or optimizers vs string inverters, plus panel brand.
- Electrical upgrades: a main panel upgrade can add a lot.
- Financing: dealer fees on loans can inflate the “cash price.”
- Location: permit fees, labor rates and local competition.
- Batteries are extra. Get them priced as a separate line.
How to Compare Quotes
- Divide the total price by the system’s DC kW to get $/W.
- Compare the estimated first-year kWh, not just panel count.
- Ask for the cash price and the loan price side by side.
- Check warranties: equipment, workmanship and roof penetrations.
Where the Money Goes
LBNL’s data shows the installed price, but it helps to know what that price buys. NREL’s residential PV cost benchmarks split installed cost into two broad groups: hardware (panels, inverters and racking) and “soft costs” such as labor, permitting, inspection, customer acquisition, overhead and profit. In NREL’s benchmarks, soft costs make up a large share of a residential system’s price, more than the panels themselves. That’s why two quotes using the same panels can differ by thousands of dollars.
| Cost group | What’s included |
|---|---|
| Modules (panels) | The panels themselves |
| Inverters | String inverter, microinverters or optimizers |
| Structural and electrical parts | Racking, flashing, wire, conduit, disconnects |
| Installation labor | Crew time on the roof and at the panel |
| Permitting, inspection, interconnection | Fees and paperwork with your city and utility |
| Sales, marketing and overhead | Customer acquisition, design, office costs |
| Profit | The installer’s margin |

Worked Example: Turning a Quote Into $/W
Say you get three quotes for the same roof (illustrative numbers):
| Quote | System size | Total price | $/W | Est. first-year kWh | Price per first-year kWh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 7.2 kW | $25,200 | $3.50 | 9,700 | $2.60 |
| B | 8.0 kW | $33,600 | $4.20 | 10,800 | $3.11 |
| C | 6.4 kW | $19,840 | $3.10 | 8,300 | $2.39 |
$/W is total price ÷ (kW × 1,000). Price per first-year kWh is total price ÷ estimated kWh. It catches quotes that look cheap per watt but use a poor roof face or heavy shade. Here C is cheapest per watt and per kWh, but it also covers the least of your usage. If your yearly use is 10,500 kWh, C would leave about 2,200 kWh to buy from the utility.
Full Price Range by System Size
LBNL’s 20th and 80th percentiles show how wide normal quotes run. Using the 2024 figures from the table above (illustrative math):
| System size | Low end ($3.0/ | Median ($4.0/ | High end ($5.2/ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kW | $15,000 | $20,000 | $26,000 |
| 7 kW | $21,000 | $28,000 | $36,400 |
| 10 kW | $30,000 | $40,000 | $52,000 |
| 12 kW | $36,000 | $48,000 | $62,400 |
A quote above the high end isn’t automatically wrong. Tile roofs, panel upgrades or long trenching runs can push it there. Ask what’s driving it.
Costs After Installation
The installed price isn’t the only cost over 25 years. Plan for:
- Inverter replacement. String inverter warranties are commonly 10 to 12 years, shorter than panel warranties. Microinverter makers such as Enphase offer 25-year limited warranties on their current microinverters.
- Roof work. If the roof needs replacing during the system’s life, panels must be removed and reinstalled.
- Cleaning, which is optional in most climates. See does solar panel cleaning increase output.
- Monitoring subscriptions, if any.
- Insurance. Ask your insurer whether coverage limits need to change.
Optional Add-Ons and How to Price Them
Ask for each of these as a separate line so you can compare:
- Battery storage. Priced per unit. Battery specs and sizing are covered in is a solar battery worth it and how much a Powerwall 3 costs installed.
- Main panel upgrade. Needed when the existing panel can’t accept the solar breaker under the NEC “120% rule” (NEC 705.12), which limits how much the main and solar breakers can add up to on a busbar.
- Critical loads panel for backup. See critical loads panel explained.
- Roof work. Replacing an aging roof first avoids paying for panel removal and reinstall later.
- Monitoring and extended warranties.
Worked Example: The 120% Rule
Many homes have a 200 A panel with a 200 A main breaker. Under the 120% rule, the main breaker plus the solar backfeed breaker can’t exceed 120% of the busbar rating:
- 200 A busbar × 120% = 240 A
- 240 A − 200 A main = 40 A maximum solar breaker
- A 40 A breaker at 240 V is limited to 80% continuous use, so 32 A × 240 V = about 7.7 kW of inverter output
Bigger systems may need a main breaker derate, a supply-side connection or a panel upgrade, which adds cost. Your installer and local inspector decide which applies.
Cash vs Loan vs Lease
| Path | 7 kW at LBNL median | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | $24,500 at $3.5/ | Lowest total cost |
| Loan | $32,900 at $4.7/ | Price often includes dealer fees, plus interest |
| Lease or PPA | $0 down | Monthly payments. The company owns the system |

Step-by-Step: Getting an Accurate Price
- Know your yearly kWh. See how many solar panels do I need.
- Request at least three quotes with model numbers, kW, estimated kWh and $/W.
- Ask for cash and loan prices on the same page.
- Check state and utility incentives in DSIRE.
- Compare warranties and the installer’s license and certifications.
FAQ
How much do solar panels cost for a 2,000 sq ft house?
It depends on kWh use, not floor space. Many homes land between 5 and 10kW, which at LBNL’s 2024 cash median is roughly $17,500 to $35,000.
Are DIY panels cheaper?
Equipment alone costs much less than installed systems, but permits, inspection and utility approval still apply.
Did prices rise in 2026?
Check current local quotes. LBNL’s latest public data covers 2024 installs.
