How much does a Powerwall 3 cost installed? Tesla gives location-specific quotes through its design tool and certified installers. Consumer guides published in 2026 commonly report around $15,000–$16,000+ for one unit installed, before incentives, but your number can be higher once electrical upgrades are added. Here’s what goes into the price and how to compare bids.
How Much Does a Powerwall 3 Cost Installed? What’s in the Quote
| Line item | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Powerwall 3 hardware | 13.5 kWh battery with built-in solar inverter |
| Gateway / backup switch | Islands the home during outages |
| Labor | Mounting, wiring, commissioning |
| Permits and inspection | Local fees vary |
| Electrical upgrades | Panel upgrade, subpanel or critical loads panel, long wire runs |
| Expansion units (optional) | +13.5 kWh each, no added power |
Third-party figure above as reported by consumer guides (e.g., SolarReviews, MarketWatch, 2026). Not a Tesla quote. Get your own from Tesla and local certified installers.
What Pushes the Price Up
- Main panel upgrade: if your panel or service can’t support the interconnection
- Distance: batteries far from the panel need longer runs
- Whole-home vs partial backup: whole-home may need more units or load management
- Expansions and extra Powerwalls for longer runtime or more power
- Local labor and permit costs
Incentives in 2026
- No 25D federal credit for homeowner-owned batteries placed in service after Dec 31, 2025 (IRS)
- State and utility programs may still help, such as California’s SGIP or utility battery programs. Check your state’s current offers
- Third-party ownership (lease or PPA) may let the owner claim a business credit (48E). Ask installers
How to Compare Bids
- Get at least two or three quotes with the same scope (number of units, whole home vs critical loads)
- Ask for a line-item price, including electrical upgrades
- Compare the cost per usable kWh and per kW, not just the total
- Check the installer’s certification, warranty on labor and permit handling
Is One Powerwall 3 Enough?
For essentials and a few hours of AC, often yes. For whole-home backup in long outages, many homes add an Expansion or a second unit. See our sizing guide.
Worked Example: Cost per kWh and per kW
Comparing quotes by total price hides differences in size. Divide by usable kWh and continuous kW instead. Using the third-party-reported range of about $15,000 to $16,000 for one unit (not a Tesla quote) and Tesla’s specs (13.5 kWh, up to 11.5 kW):
| Metric | Math at $15,000 | Math at $16,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per usable kWh | 15,000 ÷ 13.5 = about $1,111 | 16,000 ÷ 13.5 = about $1,185 |
| Cost per kW continuous | 15,000 ÷ 11.5 = about $1,304 | 16,000 ÷ 11.5 = about $1,391 |
Use the same math on every quote, including other brands. A battery with a lower total price but less kWh or kW may cost more per unit of what you need. See Powerwall 3 vs Enphase vs FranklinWH.
Worked Example: Adding Expansions
Each Expansion adds 13.5 kWh but no power. Ask your installer to price these configurations separately:
| Configuration | Energy | Continuous power | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Powerwall 3 | 13.5 kWh | up to 11.5 kW | Base quote |
| + 1 Expansion | 27 kWh | up to 11.5 kW | Added cost per extra kWh |
| 2 Powerwall 3 | 27 kWh | up to 23 kW | Added cost per extra kWh and kW |
If you need longer runtime, an Expansion is the usual way. If you need more power for big loads, a second Powerwall 3 is. See the Tesla Powerwall 3 review.
Worked Example: Payback on Bill Savings
Under net billing, a Powerwall 3 that shifts 12 kWh a day from an $0.08 export credit to a $0.40 evening rate, at an assumed 90% round-trip efficiency (illustrative; check Tesla’s datasheet), saves 12 × 0.9 × $0.40 − 12 × $0.08 = $3.36 a day, or about $1,226 a year.
| Installed price | Simple payback at $1,226/ |
|---|---|
| $15,000 | about 12.2 years |
| $16,000 | about 13.1 years |
| $20,000 (with panel upgrade) | about 16.3 years |
Under flat-rate net metering, bill savings are near zero, so the value is backup. Add backup value and any local incentive to the math. See is a solar battery worth it.
The Main Panel Question
A panel upgrade is one of the biggest swing items. Installers check:
- Busbar rating and main breaker, for the NEC 705.12 “120% rule.” A 200 A busbar with a 200 A main allows 40 A of backfed breakers.
- Available spaces for new breakers.
- Service size, for whole-home backup.
Ask whether the quote includes a main breaker derate, a supply-side connection or a full panel upgrade, and why. More in how much do solar panels cost.
Step-by-Step: Getting an Accurate Quote
- Download 12 months of usage and note big loads.
- Decide on whole-home or partial-home backup. See critical loads panel explained.
- Request Tesla’s online quote, plus at least two certified installers.
- Ask each for line items: hardware, gateway, labor, permits, electrical upgrades.
- Compare cost per kWh and per kW.
- Check state and utility programs in DSIRE. No 25D credit applies to owned systems installed after 2025.

FAQ
Does Tesla sell Powerwall 3 without solar?
Tesla’s design tool offers Powerwall with or without solar in many areas. Check availability for your address.
How long does Powerwall 3 take to pay back?
It depends on your rate plan, solar, net billing and incentives. Many homes buy it mainly for backup.
Is the 30% tax credit available for Powerwall 3?
Not for homeowner-owned systems installed after 2025.
Why do Powerwall 3 quotes vary so much?
Electrical upgrades, distance from the panel, whole-home vs partial backup, number of units and local labor and permit costs all change the total.
Is a Powerwall 3 cheaper with solar?
Adding new solar at the same time can simplify the install, because Powerwall 3’s built-in inverter can run the panels. Ask installers to price both ways.
How much does a Powerwall 3 Expansion cost?
Tesla and installers price Expansions per quote. Ask for the Expansion as a separate line so you can see the added cost per kWh.
Are there rebates for Powerwall 3 in 2026?
Some states and utilities run storage programs, such as California’s SGIP. Search your ZIP code in DSIRE and ask your utility. The federal 25D credit no longer applies to owned systems installed after 2025.
Can I install a Powerwall 3 myself?
No. Tesla sells and installs Powerwall through Tesla and certified installers.
