mAh vs Wh: Why 24,000mAh Equals 88Wh
Power bank capacity is often quoted in milliamp-hours at the internal cell voltage, usually 3.7V for lithium-ion. Watt-hours are the more useful number because they let you compare any two batteries directly: 24,000mAh × 3.7V ÷ 1,000 ≈ 88.8Wh. Your phone’s battery is usually listed the same way, so you can do quick math on how many charges you’ll get. My amp-hours vs watt-hours guide goes deeper.
Worked Example: How Many Charges Can You Get?
Some energy is lost converting from the battery to your device. On USB, plan on about 80–85% of the rated capacity reaching your device, so about 70–75Wh. On AC, the inverter takes a bit more, so plan on about 70–80%, or roughly 62–70Wh.
| Device | Battery size (maker spec) | Estimated charges from the MARBERO 88Wh |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 | ~13Wh | About 5 full charges over USB |
| iPad (10th gen) | 28.6Wh | About 2.5 charges over USB-C |
| AirPods Pro case | ~2Wh | Dozens of top-ups |
| Canon LP-E6NH camera battery | 16Wh | About 4 charges via its AC charger |
| MacBook Air 13″ (M2) | 52.6Wh | About 1 full charge via AC |
| GoPro HERO battery | ~6Wh | About 10 charges |
The MacBook result matches what I saw: the AC outlet charged my laptop without a problem, and an 88Wh pack is good for roughly one full laptop charge. The USB-C port is 18W, so it’s great for phones and tablets but slow for laptops, which is why I used the AC outlet for the MacBook.
Worked Example: Runtime for Small AC Loads
| Load | Typical draw | Estimated runtime (~65Wh usable on AC) |
|---|---|---|
| LED desk lamp | 8W | ~8 hours |
| Small 12V/AC fan | 20W | ~3 hours |
| Wi-Fi router during an outage | 10W | ~6 hours |
| Laptop in use (charger draw) | 45W | ~1.5 hours |
| Camera battery charger | 10W | ~6 hours |
For anything that pulls more than 80W, such as a coffee maker, hair dryer or mini fridge, you’ll need a bigger station. The MARBERO 237Wh version roughly triples the capacity for longer trips.
MARBERO 88Wh vs 237Wh: Which Size Fits?
| 88Wh | 237Wh | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Day trips, commuting, short outages | Weekend camping, longer outages |
| Phone charges (13Wh) | About 5 | About 14 |
| Laptop charges (52.6Wh) | About 1 | About 3 |
| Carry | Pocket-size, 2.4 lb | Still portable, larger |
Recharging With Solar
The MARBERO accepts a compatible solar panel, sold separately. A small 20–30W folding panel in good sun delivers roughly 15–20W in practice, so refilling 88Wh takes about 5–6 hours of direct sun. That’s a full day of camping sunshine, which works well for keeping phones and a camera topped up. Match the panel’s output voltage and plug to the station’s input, as listed in the manual.
Taking It on a Plane
The FAA allows lithium-ion batteries up to 100Wh in carry-on bags without airline approval, and spare lithium batteries must stay out of checked bags. At 88Wh, this station falls under that limit. Check your airline’s rules before you fly, since some carriers have their own policies.
Getting the Most From a Small Power Station
- Use DC and USB when you can. Charging a phone or tablet straight from USB skips the inverter, so more of the 88Wh reaches your device.
- Turn the AC outlet off when you’re done. An idle inverter still draws a little power.
- Charge laptops over AC with their own charger, since the USB-C port tops out at 18W.
- Store it partly charged. For long storage, lithium-ion batteries are generally happiest around 50–60% in a cool, dry place. Top it up every few months.
- Keep the vents clear so the cooling system can do its job on longer AC runs.
These habits help a compact pack like this stretch further on a day out and stay ready for the next outage. For a deeper look at where inverter energy goes, see my guide to inverter efficiency and idle draw.
