How Many Solar Panels for 1000 kWh per Month (and How Many Batteries)?

Solar panels for 1000 kWh per month usually come to somewhere around 20 to 27 panels, with typical sun and 400W panels. That’s 12,000 kWh a year, a bit above the US average. Batteries are a separate question, and depend on whether you want backup, bill savings or both.

Solar Panels for 1000 kWh per Month: The Math

System kW = 12,000 kWh ÷ annual kWh per kW (from PVWatts)

Panels = system watts ÷ panel watts

Sun level (kWh per kW per year)System size400W panels450W panels
1,100 (cloudy)~10.9 kW~27~24
1,350 (average)~8.9 kW~22~20
1,600 (sunny)~7.5 kW~19~17

Production values are typical examples. Enter your address in PVWatts for your number.

Roof Space

Plan the layout early: vents, chimneys and skylights eat into usable area.

A 400-450W residential panel is roughly 20-23 sq ft. Twenty-two panels need about 450-500 sq ft of unshaded roof, plus fire setbacks.

Monthly Isn’t Even

Solar makes much more in summer than winter. With net metering, summer surplus can cover winter shortfall. Under net billing (such as NEM 3.0), exported power earns less, so a battery that shifts solar to the evening can matter more.

How Many Batteries?

It depends on the goal:

GoalWhat to size forExample
Backup essentialsCritical loads for 1 night~10-15 kWh usable
Evening self-use (TOU)4-9 p.m. usage1000 kWh/month ≈ 33 kWh/day; evening might be ~10-15 kWh
Whole-home, multi-dayFull daily use × days33+ kWh per day

For example, two batteries of about 13.5 kWh each give roughly 27 kWh usable. Whole-home backup also requires enough continuous kW to start big loads.

Cost Range

At Berkeley Lab’s 2024 median of about $4.0/W, an 8.9 kW system is roughly $35,600 before incentives (2024 figure; 2026 quotes vary). Batteries are extra. No federal 25D credit applies to homeowner-owned systems after 2025.

Cut Usage First

Every kWh you save shrinks the system you need. LED lighting, a smart thermostat, sealing air leaks and moving to a heat pump water heater can trim usage before you buy panels. Even a 10% cut on 1000 kWh per month saves roughly two panels.

Worked Example: Month by Month

1,000 kWh a month is an average, but both use and solar output change by season. Here’s an illustrative year for an 8.9 kW system in an average-sun location (12,000 kWh total output):

MonthUse (kWh)Solar (kWh)Net
January1,100650−450 (buy)
April8501,100+250 (export)
July1,2501,350+100 (export)
October850950+100 (export)
December1,150550−600 (buy)

Under net metering, spring and summer exports offset winter purchases at the annual true-up. Under net billing, exported kWh earn less than purchased kWh cost, so the same system saves less unless you use more power at midday or store it. See net metering vs net billing.

Worked Example: Sizing Batteries for 1,000 kWh a Month

1,000 kWh a month is about 33 kWh a day. Here are three battery goals using common 13.5 kWh units, such as Tesla’s Powerwall 3:

GoalDaily needBatteries (13.5 kWh each)Energy
Essentials overnight (0.6 kW for 12 h)7.2 kWh113.5 kWh
Evening peak, 4–9 p.m. (about 12 kWh)12 kWh113.5 kWh
Whole home, one full day33 kWh340.5 kWh

With solar recharging on sunny days, you don’t need to store a full day for most outages. Power matters too: a home with central AC, a well pump and an electric range running together may need more continuous kW than one battery provides. See how many batteries to power a house and Powerwall 3 vs Enphase vs FranklinWH.

Worked Example: Cost and Payback

At LBNL’s 2024 medians (illustrative):

8.9 kW systemCash ($3.5/W)Median ($4.0/W)Loan-financed ($4.7/W)
Price$31,150$35,600$41,830
Payback at $0.165/kWh (12,000 kWh = $1,980/yr)about 15.7 yearsabout 18 yearsabout 21 years plus interest
Payback at $0.30/kWh ($3,600/yr)about 8.7 yearsabout 9.9 yearsabout 11.6 years plus interest

These assume full net metering credit. See how much do solar panels cost and solar payback period.

How Much Each Saved kWh Matters

Every 100 kWh a month you cut is 1,200 kWh a year. At 1,350 kWh per kW, that’s about 0.9 kW, or two 400 W panels, and about $3,600 at LBNL’s $4.0/W median. DOE’s Energy Saver site lists efficiency steps such as sealing air leaks, adding insulation, and switching to LED lighting and heat pump water heaters. Some steps cost less than the panels they replace.

Step-by-Step: Planning for 1,000 kWh a Month

  1. Confirm 12 months of kWh. See kWh on your electric bill.
  2. Run PVWatts for your address.
  3. Size the array: 12,000 ÷ kWh per kW.
  4. Check roof space for the panel count.
  5. Decide on batteries for backup, evening savings or both.
  6. Get quotes and compare $/W and $ per estimated kWh.
  7. Check incentives on DSIRE.

FAQ

How many solar panels do I need for 1000 kWh per month?

Typically 19-27 panels of 400W, depending on sunlight.

What size solar system produces 1000 kWh a month?

About 7.5-11 kW in most of the US.

Do I need batteries?

Not for grid-tied savings under net metering. They help with backup and TOU or net billing.

How many kWh does a 10 kW solar system produce per month?

At an example 1,350 kWh per kW per year, about 13,500 kWh a year, or roughly 1,125 kWh a month on average, with summer higher and winter lower.

Can I go off-grid with 1,000 kWh a month?

It’s possible, but it takes a large battery bank, extra panels sized for winter and usually a generator. See off-grid solar system for a home.

How many panels for 1,000 kWh a month in a sunny state?

At an example 1,600 kWh per kW, about 7.5 kW, or 19 panels at 400 W. Run PVWatts for your address.

Is 1,000 kWh a month a lot of electricity?

It’s somewhat above EIA’s U.S. average of about 875 kWh a month (2023). Homes with electric heat, central AC, pools or EVs often use more.
